I was trying to level up, I got to level 4 and I completed all the vanguard ops challenges except the pathfinder one and I don't think I can unlock the pathfinder thingy because I need the dlc but I don't have it. Do I need to buy it.

No, Pathfinder nodes are available for the Crucible, Gambit and Vanguard Ops. These are the nodes you would need to complete. You can view available Pathfinder nodes in the Pathfinder section of each playlist.
