The thing is we do need light level until they can actually produce enough loot for us to chase, which I doubt they can or will.
The pinnacle grind is there so there is actually something to do in this game. Without it, we wouldn't have much to do in a given season.
Keep in mind I hate this system, but it's the truth.
The only way they can get rid of the pinnacle grind, is if they actually fill these activities with real loot instead of a pinnacle. We should be grinding strikes for strike specific loot, Gambit should get a full refresh of brand new loot to chase so we play Gambit for loot, Nightfalls should have armor ornaments to chase along with NF weapons.
Think about all the activities you run JUST for a pinnacle. If they got rid of the level grind, you wouldn't play them at all. ALL of those activities need real loot to chase to give us an actual reason to play them.
Without loot and no level grind, these seasons would have barely anything to do. Bungie uses the pinnacle grind as content so it seems like there's more to do than there is.
They wouldn't be able to add activities like Preservation, Legendary Battlegrounds, Master Ketchcrash, without any actual proper loot incentive. You'd run Preservation once and never again if there was no pinnacle attached. Who would run any master level content without any proper loot incentive?
But that is what the game SHOULD be. We should 100% be running content for loot, not a pinnacle engram to infuse into our gear. That doesn't feel rewarding. Most of the time, it's a waste of time. Bungie needs to finally understand that this is a loot based game, and they need to fill these activities with loot instead of having us grind up a light level every season just to play the same activities we have been playing for years.

Edited by TheArtist: 1/3/2023 2:10:25 PMNice post. You literally could have stopped after the first paragraph. Spot on. Also, if they did this, they could fix most of the games sandbox and power creep problems because…… ….they could sunset gear. Instead of constantly, randomly nerfing and buffing stuff. …you’d also fix our storage problems too. Since we wouldn’t have keep everything forever.

Im a bit mixed on pinnacle grind, it does get people to replay the old content, but because it becomes a chore it isnt fun while doing it. Then to have a duplicate as a reward, makes the player despise it. I think a lot of the issue could be averted by just having drop protection. The system doesnt change, but you are guaranteed progression when you get the pinnacle. Top players know how to work the system, and are generally up to power level in a week or two. Average players 4-5 weeks, and casual/solo only players it can take the whole season to approach pinnacle power. Im more of a solo only player these days, and I feel that most of the season is spent to try to get to power level that the majority of the content for the season is not played because of needing to play other pinnacle activities to get up to the power level to try to do GM or other endgame content with LFG. I have had some of the worst luck this season with my pinnacles, and at times it just makes me want to step away from the game and not do it anymore because 99% of the loot in the game is trash. Blue drops filling postmaster are another issue that compounds with the pinnacle grind to make play and progress aggravating. Every season when I reach pinnacle power, I finally feel free to play what I WANT to play rather than what I need to in order to progress. That is what I want to have more of, freedom to play what I enjoy playing which is some of the harder content without making it impossible because my power is too low.

The thing is even with drop protection, you'd still be playing content for an item you infuse into your gear to raise an arbitrary number. That is not an enjoyable system for a game. We go through an entire season playing the end game. 30th Anniversary we were able to grind the Master Grasp of Avarice. The second Witch Queen dropped, the light level for master grasp skyrocketed and we had to regrind our levels just to play the content we paid for and were playing the week before the new season. That is ridiculous. They level lock content we are currently enjoying just because a new season dropped and they want to pad our play time. Even worse, now Grasp is on some rotation so you literally can't even play it whenever you want. Just awful FOMO design that has ruined a lot of the game. We paid $30 for the anniversary pack and we can't even enjoy the content whenever we want. A big part of the burn out with this game is grinding light levels. Drop protection would only alleviate a bit of the burn out but it wouldn't completely remove it. You would still know you're grinding old, stale content that hasn't been updated in years, and you would be doing it to raise a number just to enjoy content you were already enjoying. So whether they have dupe protection, or change to an XP bar like MMO's, or whatever, it will still be the terrible system where you have to grind up an arbitrary number, and that's not good. This game has always suffered from a lack of loot in content. Bungie seemingly wants us to play a lot of the game for absolutely nothing. Pinnacles are essentially nothing. We need real loot in these activities. More items to craft, useful materials to chase like we had in D1 to change stats on armor like the Glass Needles, more ways to obtain mods, more ways to target farm exotic armor pieces, etc. There's so much more they can do with all the activities in the game. That's the biggest problem. There's a lot of content but there's no reason to do most of it. They need to give us a reason in the form of loot. We need the carrot to chase since this is a loot based game.
The thing is we do need light level until they can actually produce enough loot for us to chase, which I doubt they can or will
Honestly, they can with how many weapons being reskin of each other. Let's say auto rifle * Archetype - Lightweight - Adaptive - Precision * Element - Kinetic - Solar - Arc - Void - Stasis That's 15 possible combinations, now add that 100+ possible perk combinations and you have lots of loot to play around. Better loot if they make different models for each of them like borderlands but no, even reskinning a weapon and making 15 names is too much

I feel your frustration 100% One solution for pinnacle grind that could be doable is to definitely implement your suggestion of playlist and destination specific loot over time, but for now, they could replace pinnacle gear with pinnacle loot. High drop rate of high stat armor and upgrade materials and a specific gun from that destination, much like legend lost sectors with exotic armor. Destiny is a loot based game, as you said, and many, if not all, new lights won't even touch it beyond Witch Queen.

Edited by Sohsuh: 1/2/2023 6:26:46 PMThey could also just make it so legendary battlegrounds gives you a red border weapon after 3 completions. People would do that instead of a pinnacle. Preservation could give you an ascendant shard. People would def run it for that every week. It's just strange to me that they release these higher difficulty activities without any actual loot. Like Legendary Heist Battlegrounds came out and it's just complete 3 for a pinnacle, the same as regular strikes. Why? I don't get why it doesn't release with extra gear. Like 2 new guns in the pool that only drop from the legendary one. Same with the legendary exotic mission. It's just a pinnacle. It's so boring. Why not have some cool cosmetics with it to chase? Solo flawless the legend exotic mission for a crazy seraph shader or something. Man, there's so much they can do with this game and they just don't do any of it. They expect us to play all these stale activities for pinnacles, that most of the time are repeat pinnacles we can't even infuse so it's a waste of time.

Yup! Good ideas here!
