Agreed. Light level is already largely pointless in a large portion of the game while also being capped in other activities to provide a cheap sense of challenge. And that lazy form of challenge is exactly why it’s lasted this long.

No light level - no sense of progression. Any rpg or mmo relies on a similar concept.

Except there's a clear sense of progression where lower level enemies will eventually deal only 1 damage to you or deal no damage while you still need the same amount of hits to kill enemies in EDZ no matter if you're 1350 or 1590 and you take the same amount of hits before you die

In that type of a game you always chase numbers. If you don't like it you play the wrong genre.

And you don't always chase numbers in destiny? Also, what's the "sense of progression" in destiny when there's no difference when you're at 1350 or 1590?
