Slight story feedback for future seasons

The player feels a little left out of things Season of the hunt, ironically, is the outlier to this. The player was incredibly important to the season's story However chosen and, so far, splicer feel as if the player is just there to watch things unfold I know it's kinda hard to let the player have some story control, especially for linear seasonal stories, but a bit more of a presence would be nice For example why wasn't the player in the final cutscene of season of the chosen? Shouldn't we be there with Crow and Zavala? And in season of the splicer shouldn't the same kind of criticism leveled at Saint also be targeted at us? The Guardian has killed 3 Kells at this point and is the reason all the old houses are dead now. Both the player and Saint have left an equal foot print against the Eliksni, yet for some reason it's the player who gets away with it but not Saint So yeah, just a little more presence in the story would be nice. Make it feel like we're apart of it rather than just observing, even small things like being mentioned when in a group of NPCs or just being in a cutscene would do fine What do you think?

  • yeah bungie really needs to fix the games main character and if you ask me i think they have the perfect opportunity to start with the vacancies for speaker and hunter vanguard

  • I agree like it doesn't have to be Mass effect or anything with player involvement but we should have some more or a role in the actual story

  • I think there’s moments where we should speak, but overall I don’t mind too much. I think they’ve cemented our character in the narrative as “the guy who gets shit done when someone needs them to” but they aren’t a political leader or anything. I wish ghost had said something when mithrax said he can’t tell if we support him or not. I know bungie doesn’t want to force that opinion on our character but they’re already kinda saying that Lakshmi is very in the wrong so there’s not a decision to be made

  • Yeah.. no. Standing about watching other idiots say dumb stuff sure is gripping 🙄 Then fighty robot lady apologises to us instead of the person she was mouthing off at.. meanwhile, Mr Monster stands there doing zero... THEN Ms Warlock Supremo bables on about who knows what.. cos I stopped caring. This season, so far, has been watching other ppl make plays while we stand there dumb as sh*t waiting for orders to go do ANOTHER Vex thing in budget Tronland.. And jus to be clear.. all this "veiled" social commentary is as subtle as a brick to the ballbag.. a brick that's attached to a truck 😶 I think it's time for a break.. I honestly can't say I care for the narrative right now. It's jus.. tedious.

There is a difference between our Guardian and Saint-14 in that, as far as Saint-14 was concerned anyway, there was no distinction between combatants and non-combatants. He was not just trying to end the Fallen threat to humanity and the Last City, he was trying to exterminate their entire species.

        • We didn't appear in that final cutscene of chosen as 1. It was between leaders and their guards 2. Is in a different area as stated by dialogue after completing the strike. The difference between saint and us is that we have killed Fallen to defend humanity but only those that pose a threat. We immediately, even before meeting them, accept house of light. Saint however had not and took the fight to them, destroying their many homes. But I agree with most of your points. I do find it irritating that we don't tell lakshimi, that song is from savathun, or that we care about Mithrax and are on his side. We do absolutely nothing other than watch will saint and lakshimi gang up on Mithrax in his time of need and act like he is responsible.

          • I’ll just do a more in depth comment here because I can’t delete the other one.
The player feels a little left out of things
I know, and it sucks, but this tends to be the case most of the time. Just look at how even if your fire team did last wish before the curse was revealed, Petra phrased it as if it was someone else’s fire team.
Season of the hunt, ironically, is the outlier to this. The player was incredibly important to the season's story
Honestly it was hard for us not to be, we’re the first people other than Osiris and spider to actually see crow. And possibly the only guardian other than Osiris who could handle the hive situation.
However chosen and, so far, splicer feel as if the player is just there to watch things unfold
So far these seasons, story wise, are meant to show the internal struggle the vanguard and other characters are dealing with as events unfold.
I know it's kinda hard to let the player have some story control, especially for linear seasonal stories, but a bit more of a presence would be nice
I agree, even just mentioning how we allowed house light to exist by letting mithrax live on titan would be nice.
For example why wasn't the player in the final cutscene of season of the chosen? Shouldn't we be there with Crow and Zavala?
Hell if I know man, maybe we were in the middle of a battleground when that was happening or something.
And in season of the splicer shouldn't the same kind of criticism leveled at Saint also be targeted at us? The Guardian has killed 3 Kells at this point and is the reason all the old houses are dead now. Both the player and Saint have left an equal foot print against the Eliksni, yet for some reason it's the player who gets away with it but not Saint
As I said in my other comment, saints eliksni crusade was long before we existed, plus to my knowledge we’ve only killed fallen warriors, likely making us like a “lesser saint” or something like that in the eyes of eliksni. Plus saint might have ended houses we don’t know about for.. well obvious reasons if that’s the case.
So yeah, just a little more presence in the story would be nice. Make it feel like we're apart of it rather than just observing, even small things like being mentioned when in a group of NPCs or just being in a cutscene would do fine
Even if our characters don’t talk in those narrative moments, comments or inputs from our ghost would be nice. Even if it was just our ghost siding with mithrax during this seasons dialogue in the eliksni quarter. It even could’ve been just saying “Saint, you shouldn’t really talk about making people live next to their monsters..” before being cut off by mithrax with the cutscene.
What do you think?
I personally think that while we do need a bit more presence in the story and narrative, I think it’s important that there are still moments where we’re like an outsider looking in, as there is a dynamic between characters and the player that wouldn’t be present if we were basically at every event and in every cutscene.

          • Couldn't disagree more. I love the fact that our Guardian isn't directly involved in everything. It makes the world feel bigger. We've already been coincidentally at the right place at the right time too much, as far as I'm concerned. More Captain Levi, less Master Chief.

            •
The player feels a little left out of things
That's exactly what I though too. I was standing there at the Saint, Mithrax and "The -blam!-" meeting and thought WTF am I doing here? I can't interact, like giving "The -blam!-" a good Slap and all I can do is listen to them threaten each other.

As much as I think the seasonal stories have been fantastic this year, except for hunt, this is a completely fair criticism. With the saint and the guardian thing, that may just be a matter of them not seeing the need to put in the effort to make scenes/dialogue different for veteran players when other parts of the game need that attention, because it wouldnt make sense to call out new lights for killing 3-4 kells at this point. For us not being in the chosen cutscene though, no real excuse. We should have at least been there.

            • To be fair, saint’s crusade against the fallen was long before we were resurrected, so his actions then likely cemented his presence in eliksni nightmares. Plus last I checked we haven’t killed innocent eliksni, just warriors, so yeah…

Players have felt this way for a long time now, myself included, but I don’t think we should be as integral as we might imagine. After all we’re literally just foot soldiers. Sure, we’ve killed the biggest threats to humanity to date, but then again, that’s our job. To be honest I don’t think I’d really want to be a part of the administration or decision making, and if you look at our missions historically, we’re usually going against orders anyway. Or at least irritating someone by doing what we’re doing. What I do want however is to feel like the battles we’re involved in make an immediate impact on the story. Every strike we run, all the campaign missions, they feel so ordinary. Same thing, over and over. Strikes especially because we literally repeat them. Maybe they mean something to the narrative, but for us it’s like an annoying trip to the grocery store. What I’d like to see (and I’m sure is impossible) is a true finale to each season, a one-day or one-week only activity where we join other guardians (ideally more than six at a time) to complete a momentous task, culminating in a battle where you don’t just watch something happen but you are part of what happens. I was hoping we’d get more of something like this when we helped evacuate the other planets, and the whole Warmind vs the Almighty was a good first try, where we build up the resources for the Warmind to do its job, but I want to actually do the job at the end as well. That way we feel more a part of the world than the usual grind. It’s a tall order, I know, but we need more personalized, meaningful events like this if we’re going to feel like we actually make a difference.

                • I like what you're what saying, with the only exception being that our guardian should be facing the same criticisms as saint, and here's my reasons why: 1. we've always been a soldier. Everything we seem to do with the exception of forsaken, is pretty simply, us following the vanguards directions. It's not personal for us its following orders. That doesn't excuse it, but the people directing our guardian deserve more flak imo. Saint was a titan vanguard during his tenure as the Nightmare of the Eliksni so he can't use that defense. 2. Our Guardian is, and has been for short while, actively helping the House of Light and the simple fact Mithrax trusts us enough to vent his frustrations in dealing with the last city says a lot to me in terms of where we fall in the Eliksni eyes. 3. Lastly, Saint has been actively speaking out against the fallen since they arrived so I understand why he would be more likely to fall under scrutiny in a political sense. this whole response is basically a tangent that has nothing to do with your post about our presence, which I'd like to add, I liked a lot and totally agree with. I'll see myself out.

The guardian has not attacked innocents and children as Saint has done, but has only gone after warring factions of the Eliksni, so there is that to keep in mind when asking for equal judgment. That, and the fact that the guardian has always gone out of it’s way to help those in need (the House of Light included) seems to suggest a healthier moral compass. Personally, I’ve gotten to the point where I’m very engaged in this part story and have to commend the writers for being prescient to world events. Cannot wait to see how this all unfolds, but I think I have a good guess.

                • I actually disagree. I like the idea we aren't doing everything at all times. It's unpredictable and mysterious as to what we do. Let's the mind focus on what is important versus not. More presence in the story? Nah. I'd say less inclusion on this kind of story. Who wants to deal with faction politics? I'd rather have a hidden focus to find a new item that leads to another new item which leads to three more items and then a hidden dungeon-like Presage honestly. Now that is fun...

                    • How many times do I have to tell you that a good story is more than one character. No, we shouldn’t be everywhere and anywhere that anything of note happens. In fact, we should have even more moments where we aren’t the focus of the action. I agree that we should have some impact as players on the direction of the story rather than it being so linear but the recent season has been excellent from a story POV. When they introduced the Drifter/Vanguard choice all those seasons ago, I thought it might actually have some ramifications but I guess not.

                      • Yup - last time we got to actually participate was to chose between drifter or vanguard in season 6. The choice resulted in specific lore and rewards, and was only character specific. So you could play both sides on different toons. That was 2019 btw!

[/quore] This I can answer: our job was to destroy Caiatl’s champion. Which we did. Put up a hell of a fight though! The ceremony for armistice was just between leaders.
The Guardian has killed 3 Kells at this point and is the reason all the old houses are dead now.
Except House of Kings. They wanted nothing more to do with the Great Machine and humanity. They refused to help the Devils when they discovered SIVA and would not abandon their banner when Erasmus rose to power. So she arranged for their extermination. As Elsie once said to us, a side must be chosen even if it’s the wrong side.
