I'm very disturbed with Ana's new dialogue vocabulary of "Giant kamikaze spaceship"

I really think that this use of vocabulary is historically and culturally very inappropriate. Just like the game current does not contain any "-godwinslaw!-" word (or maybe I don't know of its existence yet, but if it does, I don't approve of using that word either), I believe "kamikaze" to be same. It is not a synonym for self-destruct, it is an act of human degradation, one of many war crimes and crime against humanity done by a nation. And you cannot say that it was used as the meaning "the divine wind that neutralized invasion to Japan", because there is no such context in "giant kamikaze spaceship". And yes, there are other games that use the words that I'm saying are inappropriate. While I do not personally approve them, they are usually games that have such context, that either the game contains such factions, the world is cruel and crude, and/or the characters are foul-mouthed or sinister or crazy. From what I have played, I had the impression that the world Bungie is building in Destiny, and the character of Ana Bray does not fall under any of those above. Yes, Destiny world is post-apocalypse facing another apocalypse soon to come. But despite all feuds and bloodshed during the dark age, humanity of Destiny regrouped under noble causes and guardians stood to protect humanity. It was Bungie that separated light bearers to guardians, and Ana is a guardian. I really cannot understand Ana Bray using "kamikaze". Why would she use that word? There is a difference between carefree, casual personality to inconsiderate personality. I believed Ana Bray to be former, and I hope that Bungie will rethink about what vocabulary they are using to build and describe their characters and world.

  • Example: the band 'K*mik*ze Girls' changed their name because they learned it was problematic:
"When did you first realise “K*mik*ze Girls” was an issue? A close friend called me one night, and explained they had been having a conversation about problematic band names with someone they were on tour with, and that our name came up as a potential one, given the cultural history of the word 'k*mik*ze' being used in the world war. It got us thinking, and we decided that we’d like to take some affirmative action to rectify this. Where did that name originally come from? We took our name from Novala Takemoto's novel and film 'K*mik*ze Girls' about a friendship between two girls from a small town in the Japanese countryside. We liked how the name sounded phonetically, and we liked the meaning of the word K*mik*ze — which is 'Divine Wind' in Japanese — and how the word was often used to portray 'reckless' and 'chaotic’ behaviour, which we felt echoed the traits of our music at the time. What were the conversations like leading up to making the decision to change it? We did our research, looking at the cultural history behind the word 'K*mik*ze'. We spoke a lot with the person that initially brought it up with us in the first place. Just because we were using the word for its chaotic and reckless meaning, and had taken it from a novel, that doesn't mean it doesn't stand for something else as well. We want to respect other cultures, and don't want our band name to be something that upsets someone or makes them feel uncomfortable."
https://www.upsetmagazine.com/features/kamikaze-girls-cultdreams-interview-mar19

    • The reason why I defended this article is that there was a Korean who was forcibly used by fascists in the suicide attack. (=내가 이 글을 옹호한 까닭은 자살 공격에 파시스트에 의해서 강제로 이용된 한국인이 있었기 때문이야) Again. thanks for Comments. I was embarrassed that the word I just didn't want to use came out in the game I love. In all these comments, I have confirmed that the West has a vague romance about ka**ze. Everyone, Stay safe and healthy. good morning Destiny. Let's go get a shotgun.

      • OP went full kamikaze. Is “Kamikaze” an offensive term or concept in Japan? No. ... In the English speaking world, kamikaze means someone who is fanatical, irrational, and willing to die for a cause.

          • It is a perfect description of what is happening. Kamikaze was not a forced act, but one the Japanese mistook for honor. It's the same for the Cabal. We disgraced them.

            • I’d never given it a second thought, but after reading the op, you’re right. It’s a word mired in emotion and context that might cause unwanted upset. Use something else if you can. Bungie weren’t being malicious here, may not have even realised. It’s thoughtlessness, shouldn’t take much work to change or omit.

              • Totally agreed. Correction and apology is needed for using 'kamikaze' word in Ana Bray's new dialogue. Kamikaze is not a word to describe self-destruction. It is a terrible historical event that has actual victims. War crime should not be taken so lightly in this way. Take more attention to it. This is so disrespectful.

                • I want quick feedback from Bungie. Kamikaze was not a samurai, but a suicide attack forced by fascists to make sacrifices. Among them were Koreans. White friends, stop talking about "samurai". they not. they are fascist.

                  • I'm old compared to a lot of folk in the game so my experience and reference points are very different. When I was an apprentice one of the old timers in the workshop had fought in WW2 and we youngsters used to love his stories. He also used to always drive Volkswagens and when asked why he said "The natzees make the best cars". If he saw humour, however inappropriate sounding to contemporary ears, having been knee deep in the actual atrocity of the war, I think young folk today could learn to be less offended by quite literally everything they hear and see. Also, you might do well to research the voice actor in question.

                    • To play devil's advocate here, Webster-Merriam defines Kamikaze as the name of the suicide flight squads used in WW2 as well as :
: an airplane containing explosives to be flown in a suicide crash on a target
The second definition technically frees up the word from any racist connotation.

Well not to mention; How would she even know what Kamikaze means or it's use? Wouldn't that history have been lost? it's not a common part of the English Lexicon even today. Frankly it sounds like the writer didn't know that it means "Divine Wind" or "God Wind" when directly translated from Japanese, and referred specifically to the pilot who died with the plane. No one is manually piloting the Almighty from what I gather. Perhaps somewhat poor form on the part of the writer, but if we are being pragmatic, There are worse things they could have said, and Kamikaze pilots did exist and flew their planes into ships while loaded with explosives and fuel. Technically the comparison is appropriate in my mind at least. Does is it belong in the game? ... maybe not.

                        I WILL NOT BE SILENCED!
If "concentration camps" was a term used would you be offended as well? Japan had concentration camps in Guam during WW2 and my grandma was there. She heard bombs. They broke her brother's ankle, and there was nothing that could be done so he grew with it and had to wear a special shoe because that leg was shorter than the other. He called it his lucky foot. Imagine that, having to walk with an untreated broken ankle. She is not offended by the word, nor does she have any ill will toward them and neither does her brother. --- Stop being offended on other people's behalf. It embarrassing and you weren't even there, so you dont really get a say on how WE should perceive what we should perceive. It isn't up to you or anybody else, but the victims. And if you're going to choose to silence someone Bungie, then silence the both of us because I'm just going to be coming back!
The word kamikaze has transcended into a catch-all phrase for any suicidal attack. While I understand why many, especially those in South Korea (like OP) or China may resent that, we can’t judge those in the present for mistakes made by those in the past. This trend of “political correctness” is disturbing and indicates to me that people are too weak to handle the past. View it this way instead; we, as people, have progressed beyond the dark times where “kamikaze” could actually be a dangerous term and are now more unified as a society because we don’t need to be afraid of it. Edit: I am not trying to be insensitive. I have Filipino family and this is their view, therefore I consider it to be a fair opinion.
Sorry, all out of salt.
• I'm surprised you could make this post what with all that cotton wool you're wrapped in, personally I find it disturbing that after 75 years Japan has still not apologised for it's treatment of POW's, nor the horrendous war crimes perpetrated against the Chinese, there's a list as long War and Peace of non-apologies and regret though, but hey you do you. Words and deeds, two different things.

                          • Different cultures have their own inappropriate or taboo words just like we do. If they’re that offended by it I’m sure Bungie or their respective government will just censor it. All will be well. Now let’s pull our panties out of our butts.

                            • Bruh who cares. As you've said, this is a post apocalyptic shooter, literally hundreds of years disconnected from present time. You'd think that with a militarized enemy force literally right outside her door, she'd probably not give too many shits about being politically correct. Saint-14 mentioned Dregs literally eating children, and you choose to get upset that a word got slightly misused.
