Hey, D&D players, I have a few questions for you

1.) What would you say is the average size your groups have been? 2.) Do you use paper, laptop or tablet for your character info? 3.) What do you typically drink fromwhile you game? As in, what holds your beverage of choice. Ain't no one giving a Ned Flanders about what you are drinking 😜! 4.) Do you prefer to roll your dice on a solid surface, a cloth covered hard surface or more of a soft surface (like foam)? 5.) What all do you like to have with you for these gaming sessions? Edit for clarification.

      • 1.) 4, sometimes 5 2.) Paper 3.) Metal bottle if water, glass if soda 4.) Hard surface 5.) Dice, drink, personal figurine Here’s some unsolicited advice: it’s an old D&D superstition that if you want good dice rolls, follow these two easy steps: 1.) Always keep your dice with the highest number up, so the bad rolls sink to the bottom and give weight to the good rolls 2.) Never, ever, EVER roll on the map. Unless you want repeat crit fails. Cheers!

      • Roll on a hard surface but I hate the sound of dive on a glass coffee table so to soften the sound use a large hardcover book. We ended up saying that the dive have to land and stop on the book or it’s a re roll. Drink from a cup, usually a fast food paper cup. Placed on a napkin or coaster so the condensation doesn’t get on books or character sheets. Paper and pen/pencil character sheets and actual physical dice all the time. Using computer generated RNG and laptops for character sheets just feels weird. Average groups are 5/6 people. Larger groups are fun but need a bigger table. Used to play at a gaming store that had space for groups of 15 at one table. It was fun and social, but the pace was always super slow. Generally have blank paper, character sheets, pens and pencils, books, really good DMs have pictures ready to show what creatures and places look like, and sometimes music to set the mood.

Having physical character sheets, dice, and handbooks makes the experience a lot better in my opinion. 3. A plastic bottle? 4. A solid surface. It doesn't matter too much, I think 5. My character sheet (and extras) and the player's handbook. Somehow, though, I still haven't bought my own dice.

All of the above, depending on user preference 3. Usually a couple beers. Enough to get a good buzz but not enough to get stupid. 4.solid. Solid for sure. 5. Considering I’m the DM I usually have the DM “shield”, extra dice, some monster figurines for the board, a couple booklets detailing abilities/monster types, and a laptop to google stuff

I have my character sheet, spell sheet, and I have a booklet with plastic sleeves for the cards with all my spells and magical items to thumb through. I call it my D&D Rolodex! 3. Depends on if I worked that day. If I did, then I’m tired and it’s a mixture of Black Rifle Coffee, Red Bull and water. If I didn’t work that morning, then I’ll bring some new craft beer that I and the group haven’t tried. 4. I’ve got a dice tray that has a Celtic symbol carved into the wood. I keep telling myself I’m going to lacquer it and maybe even give it a polyurethane finish. I just want to protect the wood and the symbol for rolling in years to come! 5. As a player: A gift for whomever is hosting (because that’s how I was raised). It’s usually not much, a 6er is the norm. Dice tray Bag o’ dice PHB and all the accompanying 5E expansion books with stuff for the players (don’t need MM or DMG) All the pre-made scenic gridded maps I’ve accrued (in case the DM wants to use one) My mini All of minis that are finished and unfinished ones that my be relevant to where our group is currently.
I tend to bring almost as much stuff as our DM does!
Now recently we have stuck to smaller groups of 2-4 players and a dm and sometimes me and Watson play solo campaigns. 2. We mostly use all paper for character information. I have a app on my phone with easy access to all spells in case someone needs to quickly look up a spell in the heat of battle. The only time we really use electronics majorly is when me and Watson are always from our books and bored so we play solo campaigns. 3. Chocolate milk, apple cider, water, no alcohol, whatever is in my fridge at the moment really. 4. Most definitely Solid surfaces like a table. 5. Well almost all of the time the d&d games are at my house so I basically have everything I need with me. But when I used to go to a comic book store to play adventure League or when a friend invites me over I like bringing my bag filled with all my books, my army of miniatures(Watson and I used to buy the d&d board games so we have a tone of miniatures.), my dry erase grid and markers, character sheets, and a snack for all.
1.) What would you say is the average size your groups have been?
Average of my most recent sessions is 6.25 players. Player counts were - 9, 7, 7, 6, 3, 5, 6, 7. That 9 player session, while not quite a Session Zero, wasn't a full play session, and that 3 player session was a planned infiltration session. If we drop those two, coincidentally the high & low counts, the average rises to 6.33 players.
2.) Do you use paper, laptop or tablet for your character info?
The only digital devices in use at my table (ie, sessions I run) are my phone and laptop. I try to use my tablet as little as possible, only going to it if I need notes from a previous session, and using my phone for music & ambient sounds. Players use pen & paper. It cuts down on a lot of potential distraction, keeps players in the moment and makes the game flow much smoother.
3.) What do you typically drink from while you game?
Almost always soft drinks. When Nerdvana (my game cave) gets finished, it will have a dorm fridge in the corner for drinks. My wife's room next door, Assembly Hall, has wine storage and my new gaming table has (will have) attachments to hold cups or wine glasses. I'm certainly not prudish, but I try and keep alcohol consumption under control, overindulging will derail a session faster than everyone hopping on their smartphones.
4.) Do you prefer to roll your dice on a solid surface, a cloth covered hard surface or more of a soft surface (like foam)?
Dice trays are the best!
5.) What all do you like to have with you for these gaming sessions?
As a DM, if it's on home turf, I'll occasionally use old wargame terrain for outdoor encounters, but more and more I just use a Chessex Battlemat or Megamat (which is what I always use for "away games"), Tabletop Tokens from Geek Tank Games, some wet erase markers (I use Vis à Vis by Expo because of the thicker lines), miniatures (I prefer players to have their own, but will loan or let them use a proxy if they don't have one or forget what they do have), rulebook(s), my notebook with adventure outline, a screen (OMGWTFBBQ! Greatest screen evar!), pencils, paper, oh yeah... LOADS OF DICE! There's probably something I'm leaving out, probably many somethings I'm leaving out, but that's most if it I think. It's funny though, my insistence on a predominantly non-digital table. If I were going to run a theater of the mind style session, I could do it from just my phone & tablet. Rulebooks, notes, maps, dice rolling apps, character sheet apps...I've got them all right there. But then, if I wanted a digital game I'd fire up the Xbox. EDIT: I missed the word "from" in question 3. I ususlly use a Tervis tumbler, but players at my house can use anything in my cabinets.
