I have seen a shocking amount of people on these forums who genuinely believe that the Menagerie chest glitch was intentional, and I would just like to clarify a few things.
While I do believe Bungie did not patch the glitch immediately because the community feedback was mostly positive, to say it was intentional from the beginning is a fallacy.
The menagerie chest glitch was not an intentional addition, and let me to state why:
1) I am 99.99% sure the 300 seconds granted at the end was to give players time to collect entries for the Confessions lore book, which is done by finding entries hidden around the Menagerie.
2) This was not designed like a feature. Throughout the rest of the Annual Pass, the activities were much less rewarding. In the Black Armory forges, you got 2-3 unique rewards (the weapon you forged, a Y1 reskin, and a armor piece if you used a forge polymer). In Reckoning, you got a piece of Gambit Prime armor and maybe a weapon.
In Season of Opulence, you can get as many as 6 Menagerie-specific weapons/armor in a single run of an activity that can take less time than a strike and is impossible to fail. Pretty different, right?
3) You can hear the boss dying again when you reenter the room. This is pretty insignificant, but if the chest glitch were a tested and intended feature, the audio for the boss’s death would not play every time you enter the room when you killed it 2 minutes ago.
4) If this were intended, why not just use more than one chest? It’s not like it would be that hard to add 3-4 more chests. Is the act of running in and out of the same area five times in rapid succession supposed to be hard!? Because I have trouble hitting enemies standing still and even I can consistently get 5-6 Austringers in 1 run of the Menagerie.
5) There is no indicator that you should repeatedly run in and out of the boss room for more loot. Even the most secret of secret rewards in Destiny 2 have some subtle indication that they’re there. To initiate the Outbreak Perfected quest line, you see an unlocked door in the daily heroic adventure that was previously locked. To start the Whisper mission, you see a Taken Major on Io that wasn’t there before.
There is no indication given that there is a magical chest that refills when you walk out of the room in Menagerie.
And lastly:
6)-Bungie themselves referred to it as an “error” in the TWAB, which is, by definition,
a deviation from accuracy or correctness; a mistake, as in action or speech
TL;DR:
The Menagerie Chest glitch is, in fact, a glitch. Fight me.
Edit: Wow I sound pretentious

1 ReplyMultimillion dollar World class company. Build menagerie and give it 5 minute timer. No one in the entire studio tests it. Yeah its intentional.
-
Edited by Gigafloh: 7/2/2019 7:00:17 AMThey let it pass through intentionally, this is what you ignore in the whole process.
-
It was indeed a bug intended for finding lore. The first thing I found while playing the first time and getting lost and separated from my team because I died, falling , lol... Was lore. I immediately understood why the long timer existed.

7 RepliesCounter: There is no way a respectable developer would miss something like a 300 second timer. The 300 second timer was intentional.(which you seem to suggest) Every half competent destiny player knows that leaving a loading zone resets the chests in the zone. This has been around since D1, I remember farming planetary materials this way, and in d2 we have all farmed lost sectors this way. So we have a 300 second intentional timer... and they didn’t think to make it so the chest didn’t reset? Even though it’s common knowledge that chests reset? My opinion is that they are either woefully incompetent (lots of evidence to support this tbh) OR They intentionally left the “glitch” before release, because they knew that early in the season players would be low light and inexperienced, making runs take 30-40 minutes. If you open the chest 5 times after a 30 minute run, you got 1 reward every 6 minutes. Now runs take what 15 minutes and don’t feel challenging if you are at a decent light level. And with a leveled chalice you get more rewards. So he reward for time investment is about the same. (Assuming maxed chalice)

It was indeed, a bug. Bugs like it have existed since D1 and were removed for the same reasons.
-
2 RepliesYou seriously think they didn’t know about this? They would have patched it after the first week like they usually do.
-
People who are angry over the patch, think of it this way: If the patch never existed, it would’ve never been a problem.
-
Players who think it's intentional are special kind of people. End of.

Calus applauds your flawless success...with nothing

Edited by DHawk12: 6/30/2019 10:42:30 PMIts most likely not intentional but the delayed patch is intentional (LoW nerf as well.) Bungie lets some things slide but not something like the pinnacle weapon enhancement core exploit which was shut down immediately, i didnt even have time to do it when i got home from work lol.
-
It's totally a glitch. Why would Bungie do that on purpose?
-
I don't know that it's a glitch. They have known since D1 Cosmodrome patrols that when you leave an area the chests can respawn. How many years has that been now? Just like White Nail in Whisper and the Exotic armors, they knew what they were doing. I think they do it then take it away to give people something to talk about.

That last edit was funny.

8 RepliesIn fairness this is probably the like 5th time this type of mistake has been made in the history of destiny. If it was intentional then i guess this is just a major over sight on a problem theuve had to fix several times before that they havent learned their lesson on. Regardless it was a thing that made the activity actually enjoyable vs after a fix where almost no one will do it because it rewards you with basically nothing most times

6 RepliesIf this was the first time this has happened in destinys life I would agree with you 100%. The fact that this exact chest bug has happened again leaves room to consider this was an intentional “accident”. Consider for a moment how many people flock to destiny when they learn of some sort of rewarding bug favoring the players. The second something is found...reddit...the forums....and tons of media outlets are reporting it. They have observed for years our behavior how unintended flaws found in the system benefitting the player create a surge in player popularity. Those bugs also trigger free media/advertisement in the form of many news articles written by news outlets keeping the Destiny game front and center in our newsfeeds. People always are looking for a deal....have a fear of missing out....and are drawn to that which is popular. Designing something to seem like a glitch favoring the player for a limited time gives all that free news...popularity and attention to their game as they look to draw back players and get them hooked makes PERFECT sense. You can tell me I’m paranoid and suggest I wear a tin hat with tons of other conspiracy theories....but you have to admit there is a lot of logic to suggest why they would do that.
-
4 RepliesThing is, this is so easy to replicate, I’m surprised it was never caught. You mean to tell me, at no point during testing of the Menagerie, did they leave and return to the room? That would be exceedingly unlikely, and this would be caught immediately. A regression test would find this before release. No way this wasn’t in some part, left in intentionally.
-
Obviously it was a glitch. People just really, really liked the glitch.
-
Instead of writing a long post, you could have left a link to the TWAB where Bungie stated it wasn't intentional. Just saying.
-
An error that has popped up several times prior. So you're saying they just didn't test a simple thing like leaving the area and coming back? They had to block a door in a lost sector because of this same exploit just a year ago. Conspiracy or incompetence? Which would you prefer from them now that they're on their own?
-
2 RepliesThat glitch is has been the grandfather of all glitches since day 1 D1 .. it’s hard to believe that such a super well known standard glitch was not taken into consideration when this was created .. It’s either been intentional or purposefully “overlooked” .. This glitch is so known and old it would border to a miracle that it would be not “detected” ^^

1 ReplyEdited by Freak: 6/30/2019 4:46:25 AMWe have “flat earthers” .... Do we really need to have this conversation? Let me sum up. A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it. Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet. ~Agent Kay

I warned my friends to exploit that bad boy while it lasts, now they cry in while I have the sparrow 😎

I shan't change your mind! I agree with you. Good show! 🧐
-
What is the whole “change my mind”? WTF Who wants to change your mind? LOL
-
Of course it wasn’t intended. It’s actually fun and makes your time feel worthwhile. There’s absolutely no way bungie set out with that intention.

I'm confused, who are you?
