Good evening everybody! This is Aifos coming to you alive from Karnaca, offering you, yes you anonymous reader, a job as a delivery man for my whale oil company!
As part of the All Inclusive Fictional Organization, Saavy? you’ll be tasked with taking explosive tanks of whale oil from one location to another, by utilizing a customizable set of magical powers! My bodyguard—and apparently assistant—Papika will be handing out applications after the show!
*ahem*
You know, spinoff games are weird, aren’t they? Like, how does “saving a princess” transfer to kart racing? ..And tennis? And soccer.. And board games.. And—you know, nevermind.
The point is it’s kind of crazy how far out a spinoff game can be from its original franchise, but it’s honestly, always really fun to see what ideas the devs can come up with, and I’m sure all of us have had a few ideas of our own from time to time.
And that’s what this thread is about!
Tl;dr? Here’s my point!
If you were tasked with making a spinoff game for any franchise of your choosing, what would you make?
My answer:
In Dishonored 2, there’s this side objective to blow up a wall. A group of people were already preparing the expedition, when you came in and knocked them out, and/or murdered them! However, they were one whale oil tank short, and the only other whale oil tank in the area was on the other side of town.
So, I did the only logical thing, and transported this highly volatile tank of whale oil across the town by jumping from rooftop to rooftop with Far Reach, and pulling the tank along with me by grappling it from the old rooftop to the new one, with the same power, and catching it in mid air.
Sometimes, I’d miss, and it’d fall to the ground amd alert all the guards, or there’d be a fall just slightly too high, and I’d drop the tank making it explode in my face. I had a blast!
I think a puzzle game using this same concept (grappling explosives from one point to the other) could be super fun!
So, introducing Dishonored: Emily’s Whale Oil Delivery Service! :D
No? Pfft, fine. Spoilsport.
But that’s all for now, folks! Jambuhbye!

1 ReplyHalo, the story of the flood infested Mona Lisa. (Horror game spinoff)

1 ReplyIt just crossed my mind that the Earth Defense Force universe would be a perfect setting for an Atom Zombie Smasher-type game. You could be acting as a sort of off-site commander trying to organize forces from a satellite view, hoping to coordinate whatever troops are available into pushing back the latest hordes of giant insects sent by aliens to kill us. Now question is, would I want this to be like ATS in that you also try and evacuate civilians or should it be a little more like a typical strategy game in that the insects have set some stuff up already that you’ll have to respond to (such as spider webs, ant hills, and/or UFOs).

6 RepliesDestiny - (RTS) Have all the races playable with their own story. Maybe have a single character you can always bring into matches so you can level them up throughout the game and also weapons and armor you can upgrade. Mortal Kombat - (RPG/MMO) I think this would be kinda cool. Playing as these legendary characters in an open world would be fun. Each one with unique abilities. Example... Scorpion - lvl 1 chain pull: Can pull a single enemy towards scorpion, stunning them for X seconds. Lvl 2 chain pull: Pulls an additional enemy, stun duration increased. Lvl 3 chain pull: Shoots multiple chains, capable of pulling entire groups of enemies. Bonus: Chains are now engulfed with flames. Enemies pulled are now stunned and burn for X seconds.

2 RepliesYou know, as I was playing through The World Ends With You, I couldn’t help but think.. We need a Metroidvania set in this universe!
Yeah, I know, ”Yes, we get it, Aifos, you’ve been playing TWEWY, shut up already!”, right?
I’m serious, though! I’m going to use the names “Neku” and “Shiki”, but bear in mind the game wouldn’t necessarily have to feature them. Could be someone new. So imagine this! Neku & Shiki (or [insert new protagonists here]) wake up to find themselves in another Reaper’s Game. They start off with a few pins, namely, a Shockwave (melee attack), and Pyrokinesis (ranged attack) pin. As you explore Shibuya, you’d be able to find pins like lightning, or grave marker to replace these, in addition to just straight upgrades. Okay, but here’s where it gets interesting. You got 2 characters here, so why not have them work independently? There’s this one moment in TWEWY—oh, and, minor spoilers—where Shiki has to split up with Neku to fight a boss. She activates it weakness above, while Neku attacks from below. In this spinoff, Shiki would follow behind Neku by default, but you could switch between them at will, and they could split up to activate switches & the like. Then you’d have your standard stuff. You’d find pins that act as upgrades, such as getting Psychokinesis to throw objects at distant switches, or Time Bomb to break down cracked walls, all while fighting Noise. The biggest obstacle I see here is how to keep the Game involved in this. If the GM tells you your task (“Get to area [X]! You have [X] minutes!”) then you lose that sense of exploration. How do you incorporate the 7 day limit? Whatever the case, something about TWEWY just really screams “Metroidvania”! . . . Maybe I’ve just been playing too much Hollow Knight..

6 RepliesDestiny gameplay infused with The Witcher 3s RPG elements, story, depth of characters and open world. I feel like that's what everyone expected Destiny to be before launch.

1 ReplyOk so this might sound crazy, but hear me out: A single player Star Wars role playing game!

Hmm, how about an FPS Mass Effect set during the first contact war with the turians. It would still have to have a narrative focus, but I think it could work.

1 ReplyEdited by Rhynerd: 10/14/2018 9:24:46 PMI have to admit, I have an idea or two for other games but I wanna come up with a nonviolent idea. I started rolling a couple around in my head, thought about Observer_ ended up making this post about Layers of Fear’s tech, tore it down, made the post again in the cool technology thread, and then came here. I’m thinking more about an idea I was rolling around earlier: Imagine being part of a salvage team in the Battletech Universe. Trying to collect as much as you can of these massive war machines, seeing what can be saved, and let’s not forget that you’ll get to loot the side that lost as well! I could imagine you being a member of the team working on the ground floor, having to scale mechs to install/check on different hooks and/or magnets or checking up on damaged enemy mechs to see what might be intact. It must lead to quite the sense of scale in other games. That being said, it could also lead to some dark moments such as seeing what’s left of tanks in this setting or investigating what’s left of a mech that got cored out...

1 ReplyTitanfall rpg where you play a mercenary pilot or a pokemon fighting game similar to smash
-
13 RepliesEdited by epicperon: 10/11/2018 1:47:06 AMI’d make a pokken-esque fighting game, but with only legendary pokemon. And instead of a bunch of tournaments and a 20 minute “episode”, I’d make a long, soul calibur-esque single player mode about the creation story of pokemon, from Arceus creating the world and palkia, dialga, and giratina to type:null and silvally being created to fight the ultra beasts. The roster would be kinda big; every legendary and mythical pokemon plus silvally and the UBs, but it wouldn’t be as crazy huge as smash 5. It would be awesome

1 ReplyNo Man's Sky Go It's a No Man's Sky spin-off using AR on your phone. Mine real rocks and trees. Run from Sentinels. Visit bases. I would lose so much weight.

3 RepliesY’know what, I’m just gonna mention this idea that comes to mind from time to time when it comes to 40k. I’d love to see a game involving a kill team of Guardsmen or a Rogue Trader’s retinue of armsmen caught somewhere deep in enemy territory, and having to find a way out of the mess. There’s something about being in a cave or somesuch with nothing but a laser rifle, some armor, and friends that sounds like a hectic little romp.

2 RepliesI had this idea a while ago, but a FPS in the Starcraft Universe. There are massive scale battles between hundreds of players (as they are all the individual units) For example, as a Terran, you’d start as a marine, and getting kills would earn you money which you could use to buy the gear for other units (firebat suits, cloaking devices for ghosts, etc) and eventually by leveling up enough, you’d be able to buy Siege Tanks and eventually battle cruisers, Thors, and the like

3 RepliesTitanfall 2. It’d be like (Insert name of that other survival mode that I forgot) but in the wilderness and against the beasts of the Frontier and Typhon. Could make for a departure from the series main enemies in trade for a look at the environment’s dangerous wildlife. Maybe throw in some storms to the mix as well. Rain causes surfaces to be more slippery helping you slide farther and faster, and lightning periodically damages your Titan but zaps surrounding enemies as well.

1 ReplyA hunting game set in the Fallout universe. You are the owner of a shop in a major hub town (e.g. Megaton, Diamond City, etc.) and have to go into the wastes to hunt for food to sell to the settlers. There would be some narrative elements, but primarily it would be about exploration and resource management.

It'd be less a spin-off, and more the sequel we deserve... Imperial Commando

2 RepliesBop2. I'd make it into an open world rpg, online optional game. I would also do a spin off of Battle Royale with out the BR elements for it's pvp only thing that would be the same as the map size. Everything else that is BR will be scrapped. Go in with your own loadouts, vehicles everywhere, big teams, team with the most kills wins.

5 RepliesEdited by ThyLordIntrovert: 10/11/2018 4:44:41 AMOk, hear me out on this.... An XCOM style turn based strategy, set in the spiral knights universe...SET DURING THE MORAI WARS! (Hold for applause) Get a squad of four knights, classes are based on the gear sets in spiral knights, like bomber, striker, and defender. Actually, I kinda want to figure out who currently owns the license to spiral knights and see if they can make this a thing

3 RepliesI would love to make a survival/horror spin-off for Halo based on the short story “Mona Lisa”. Anyone that has read it knows this would be an amazing opportunity to do something other than your standard run-and-gun FPS game. Maybe 3rd person horror/puzzles like Silent Hill or first person horror/survival like Alien: Isolation? Something that will make the Flood truly terrifying.
