Should we, as Americans, re-examine our 2nd Amendment of the Constitution to determine its validity in a modern world? This is a discussion so please explain your position.

2 RepliesEdited by Darth Turtle: 9/14/2018 2:24:07 PMIt shouldnbe re examined. The constitution is not a perfect document. By looking back over it we can find and change parts of it that may need to be changed. Does that mean a full repeal? No but looking at it can’t hurt

5 RepliesThe United States Constitution was created on the idea that it will change over time, that as civilization progresses then so too should the laws that are in place. This is why amendments can be made, they are amending the law to better fit with a progressed civilization. Should the 2nd amendment be revised? Perhaps, the Constitution was made to be able to be changed and revised and have additions. The weapons of when the Constitution was made are very different to the weapons we have to day. What defines "arms"? Never mind the weapons of tomorrow, simply look at today. Do nuclear weapons count as "arms"? Do tanks? Or artillery, cannons, etc.? Maybe not in our lifetimes, but if the US exists for the next few centuries then I'll prophesy that the 2nd amendment will be seeing some revisions.

1 Replyit would be a waste of both time and tax money that can be useful on something more important, not to mention those running for office only use the firearms/2nd amendment debate to rake in more voters take that away and what are they going to use. The politicians won’t change it unless they are capable of lining their pockets from doing so than not. I’m not up for a debate but I’d still like to hear your stance on firearms.

2 RepliesYou can't stop bad people from doing bad shit. Plain and simple. Last time I checked I'm a grown ass man who takes responsibility, payes his taxes, works a 6-3 job and no longer am I in the school classroom. Teacher mentality is something I despise so get out of here with punishing the whole because the bad seeds sowed through out -blam!- it up for everyone else. Just my opinion. I'm not a gun nut so I don't need a collection but if I ever wanted one I shouldn't have to jump through hoops for it,

When only the government & criminals have guns, than too shall they have are other freedoms.

1 ReplyIt will be one day, to think that an amended right won’t one day be updated to be appropriate to its modern era is delusional. It’s happened before and it will happen again, it’s as simple as that. And yes I feel it’s due.
-
10 RepliesNo, why should we tamper with the right to defend ourselves. You see, the 2nd Amendment is highly overlooked due to all these mass shootings and people fail to recognize my right to own a gun to protect myself and my family, hunt if I need to, have fun at the range etc. Nowadays lots of politicians don't give a damn about your safety and would gladly see all of your money stolen and your family members dead or injured.
-
4 Repliesit needs editing, but not removal. it was passed when the only guns were single-shot rifles or flintlocks. the founding fathers wouldn’t have predicted guns with more than one bullet, let alone fully automatic.
-
2 RepliesYes. But it will never happen. Like health care, you have too many vested interests in preserving a clearly dysfunctional status quo. I believe in private gun ownership. But we, unfortunately do not have any reasonable or responsible partners to work with in getting to any sort of a sane compromise. Like so many things, we've instead reached a point where willingness to compromise is seen as weakness and a "flawed character". When the fact is that its a sign of wisdom and maturity.

I'm pro-gun and actually think we could use some better mental-health evaluations before we let people go out and buy guns... just sayin'

8 RepliesWhy can't I have a tank or a rocket launcher?
-
22 RepliesWhy would we. America was founded upon freedom. The ability to choose how to defend yourself from threats is freedom. Threatening that is threatening me so good luck trying to get rid of it.
-
5 RepliesNo, and the biggest reason is because doing so opens up the rest of them to "re-examination" which none of us should want. The 2nd is fine as is, and by doing some research you can find that even back then they had guns that could fire a large number of rounds in a short time, which I reference because whenever people talk about the 2nd in the context of "does it fit the modern world" they're almost always referencing semi-auto guns. Hell, they let a merchant ship have a cannon.

Edited by Partisan: 9/11/2018 10:53:19 PMYes, Here's why: we should grab guns from people I feel like we all deserve a better class of evil Liberal here, and I was never really a fan of hedging anyway

4 RepliesIf someone really wants to get a hold of a gun, an amendment change isn't going to stop them. Better access to mental health resources and a deeper understanding as to WHY gun violence occurs as opposed to HOW it occurs will go farther than changing some words on an old sheet of paper.
-
7 RepliesI would say yes, it does need to be reevaluated. Not removed, but tweaked and updated for the times. Perhaps a single small revision to state that all citizens of "sound legal and mental state" can own guns.
-
1 ReplyNo. I continue to propose that with that right comes the responsibility to use them properly. There’s been a lack of proper parenting for a couple of generations now and so we’ve got the product of that which has no experience with how to cope with life. So I repeat, we don’t have a 2A problem.
-
1 ReplyI think you can take my guns, you'll have to come get them tho. Good luck

1 ReplyI support 2nd Amendment, and strongly believe in gun rights. I work with guns, train both civilians and LE shooters, and compete in various shooting competitions. I think that 2nd Amendment should not be changed, because it will open a flood of changes to other Amendments. However, Federal and local government should implement certain changes to make gun laws more uniformed across the United States. More importantly both sides of the guns debate are extremely polarized, they should start dialogue, find middle ground, and really work together, to finally come up with working solutions to curb this issue.

1 Reply10 years of whining about this and nothing has happened, give it a rest already.
-
18 RepliesNope, slippery slope and all that. And if it is re-examined it'll most definitely be re-examined by the wrong people. Shall not be infringed means shall not be infringed for a reason.
-
Well, the Constitution has been amended before.
