In the Spire of Stars armor lore tabs, Calus reveals that the Cabal have vast texts on something called the "Ennead"(which means set of 9), and characterizes them as "trapped and reaching out".
Perhaps they reside in unknown space, but can't actually leave it.
Also, there's the lore tabs for the Trials weapons, in which there is a theory that every different font used is a different member of the Nine.

That makes sense, whenerv we go to that rip in space time multiplayer map, it’s literally like another dimension, with no space just time.
