Why does Uldren hate Guardians?

If I could get an answer, this would help me understand possibly why he’s killing Cayde.

  • You are all weak, entitled, irrational, immature and unworthy to wield such power. While my people suffer you "guardians" go and play the hero and gain praise from your people well not anymore. I have killed your vanguard next i will kill you, your fellow guardians, your people, destroy your beloved home and i will take your travelers light and rule the cosmos unchallenged.

    • It's a long read, but I've tried to sum it up as best as possible.
It all starts in the Vanilla Campaign of Destiny 1. Basically, we (the guardian) are tasked with destroying the heart of the black garden to cripple the birthing place of the vex and begin the traveler's healing process. Well to do this, we have to find the Garden, and so we seek out the Awoken for help. Uldren and his sister, the Queen of the Awoken ultimately do help us, but Uldren is clearly opposed to our goal of destroying the Heart of the Garden. He tells us, "You want to turn it into a battleground, how unimaginative." From that we can assume he holds Guardians to a low standard and sees us as warmongering beings with no right to wield the powers of the Traveler. We are weak to him.

After we do end up destroying the Heart, the next threat we face is Crota, Son of Oryx. And we slay him...permanently. Keep this in mind.

Now, fast forward to the House of Wolves. The Queen and the Awoken have been betrayed by the Fallen House of Wolves, and who does she call on to help? The Guardian. This action kinda undermines the Awoken's own strength, authority, and power, which I would also assume Uldren does not approve of. The fact that we actually succeed at destroying the Heart, slaying Crota and wrangling in the House of Wolves and their Kell, Skolas, also probably does not put the Awoken Prince in a comfortable position. The Awoken seem to be coming off as weak and unable to fend for themselves, whereas before our arrival, they were mysterious and kept to themselves.

Now, fast forward again to the Taken King expansion, the final nail in the coffin. Remember Crota? Yeah well his dad is Oryx, God-King of the Hive. And he's pissed. Rightfully so, I mean we did kill his son after all. So, right at the start of the expansion, we see the Awoken fleet engage in battle with the Hive and Oryx. This ultimately ends with the Awoken being completely annihilated, their Queen supposedly killed, and the Prince? Well he goes missing (later we find out he crash lands on Mars). Point is, the Awoken have lost everything.

So, after all of these major events, it's possible that Uldren holds the Guardians responsible for the catastrophe that doomed the Awoken and killed his Sister/Queen. It's entirely possible that he resents us and the City for even coming to them for help in the first place. All told, he blames us for what happened, since we killed Crota, we ultimately brought the wrath of Oryx to our system (however, Oryx's arrival was inevitable anyway, so it's not like we are entirely responsible just because we killed his kiddo).
TLDR: Uldren blames us for the annihilation of his people and be death of his Queen/sister.

    • "Ah yes, The Awoken. Out there wavering between the Light and the Dark. Refusing to take a side. A side should always be taken Little Light. Even if its the wrong side." ----The Exo Stranger/ Elsie Bray. I think this quote is going to play a big role in Forsaken for several reasons. 1. We know next to nothing about the true nature of the Awoken. We know that they've been touched or affected by The Darkness in ways that regular humans haven't.....be we don't know how or why. 2. Back in vanilla D1, when we showed up looking for The Black Garden and how to destroy it.....we were RIDICULED by Uhldren for our lack "imagination". Presumably with respect to how to either use The Black Garden.....or disturbing some sort of "balance". 3. Uhldren was opposed to his sister, The Queen, offering us assistance in destroying The Black Garden....while at the same time testing our abilities. 4. Mara Sov ultimately DID take a side. She came down (apparently ) on the side of The Light. In taking on the House of Wolves and the Fallen in the Reef Wars to protect what remained of humanity on Earth (and the Traveller)....then sacrificing her nation's military in an effort to stop the invasion of the system by Oryx.
What we may find out is that Uhldren has come down on the side of The Darkness. Probably for one or both of two reasons. One, THE AWOKEN ARE A MATRIARCHAL SOCIETY. Which means that women control everything, and have all the real power. So----in our terms----Uhldren has the power and social standing of a PRINCESS. Which means---in Awoken society as it currently is---he will never have any real power. So siding with the Darkness might have simply been a power grab. Also there is the matter of Savathun. Whom we know is still out there. While Oryx and Xivu Arath are aggressors, Savathun is a trickster. What her other sisters try to take through force, she instinctively tries to take through Guile and Misdirection. So Ulhdren could potentially be an agent of Savathun's, and has etiehr been seduced or tricked into her service. Either because he thinks this is a personal path to power......or (misguidedly) thinks that allying with the Darkness might be the Awoken's best chance for survival. He would not have been the first to have been seduced into that way of thinking. Because you can hear snippets of it in Toland The Shattered's writings...and his belief that the Darkness' final victory is inevitable.
• <I can come up with a few reasons. I don't know when it started, but he's always had this sort of resentment towards the City. Since D1 when we came to the Queen asking where the Black Garden was. He's a bit of a dick from the get-go. Then we come to the Battle of Saturn. He witnessed his entire fleet get wiped out by one dude. He's probably confident that Mara's dead. What was her external plan? Help us reach Oryx by clearing his fleet. In his eyes we are probably responsible for the deaths of hundreds. Also he may be insane thanks to those hundreds of deaths.>

Maybe he blames Guardians for Mara’s “death” and the Reef’s struggles? The Reef Wars against the House of Wolves were to stop the Wolves from joining Twilight Gap and to protect the City. The Reef did all that to help us, and we didn’t return the favor until decades later in HOW, and that was just one Guardian. In the battle against Oryx, the Reef lost its Queen and most of its fleet to stop Oryx’s advance and give the City time to plan an attack. Again, the Awoken made a sacrifice to help the City and Uldren had every right to assume that we did nothing in return.

            • Idk why he started hating us, but I can tell you why from what happened in D1. We walked into the reef like we owned the place and we demanded that they help us. Then we showed him up and proved him wrong by bringing the gate lords head back. Then when Oryx arrived after we killed Crota, he saw Oryx kill hundreds of awoken, and even his sister (maybe), regardless that Mara had planned the whole thing. Because we killed Crota and caused Oryx to come to the system, I’m sure he thinks we are responsible for the deaths of all those awoken

            • Keep in mind that the whole reason Oryx was even in our system was because WE killed his son. I wouldn't be surprised if he blamed us for what happened to the Awoken fleet and his sister.
