Why Are You Still Playing? Or Why Are You Still On The Forums?

I'd like to get some honest feedback from the community. But I'd love to stay away from the typical venom of most posts. I assume that we all started this Destiny journey because we love games, so much so that we join up on the forums to talk games when we can't play games. I've been sick for a few days and I've spent some time on many posts on the forums. I've talked with lots of people about lots of subjects, and it's mostly been a great time! I've noticed 2 main types of gamers currently on these forums. You have players who think this game needs a lot of overhauls to make it truly great, but still see something worth playing. Then there are those players who are just plainly and simply done with this game. They don't see anything worth saving and/or they have zero faith that Bungie could save it anyway. What I'd like to know is, for those of you who still play, what keeps you here? What parts of this game draw you back? Those who don't play, what really turned you off? Not the typical cliches the mob have been throwing around the forums, but an open and honest answer given thoughtfully and not emotionally would be appreciated. Let's start a discussion everyone can learn from. Maybe not just in the sense of a developer learning what gamers want, but let's be an example of how to have a productive discussion. Let's learn how to deal with different opinions with respect, and let's learn how to make our point without being toxic to others. Who's with me? I'll start. I still play because even after all this time, Destiny still has the smoothest gameplay I've yet experienced in a shooter. I'm disappointed that they've taken some of our power fantasy away, but I still enjoy how badass it feels to drop a crowd of dregs with a scout rifle as I switch to an auto to mop up the stragglers. How about you?

  • Destiny 1 was the most incredible FPS game I have played. I had a lot of friends (some worse than others) and there was always something to do even when I hit MAX level, multiple times. I took a long break once The Taken King came out to deal with some personal issues in my life, get a solid foundation for my future, and that ultimately lead to me meeting the love of my life and the woman I am going to marry. We've been dating for 2+ years now, and I have decided to jump back into the Destiny/Bungie world. I was a HUGE Halo fan, and I played the hell out of all of them. My love for Destiny comes from Halo 1 and Halo: Reach. So, when I heard about Destiny 2, I was really excited. My fiancee was very supportive and even watched me play through a few levels. She liked the story, but doesn't like watching me shoot aliens all the time. I still play Destiny 2 because even though I see many flaws in the game (if I sit there and cherry pick them out), I love the feel of it. I like being able to jump into a Raid with random people and have fun, or play Iron Banner with some friends and make new ones along the way. Regardless of how much Destiny 2 can be improved, it still is, at it's core, and incredible game, filled with a lot of things to do. Also, my young brother just started playing as a Warlock, and I get to feel that experience of learning new things with him all over again. So, my main point here is, I love Destiny because of the way I get to share the experience with other players and people.

    • Not playing since the release of CoO. I log in at every update to see how things have improved. This far, they have worked out the rewards systems for events GREATLY. And I mean it. Last Iron Banner and the new Crimson events rewards system are perfect. But, the rewards are still crap. The game still is as shalow as it was when it was released. Not worth comming back, unless you are into killing PVE monsters for the sake of it, or playing Barbie Doll with your guardians. Or dancing like Beyonce because hahahahaha look mom I'm dancing in the game! Not my kind of game. Changing that will take time, a lot of time, so I keep checking the forums for updates hoping one day the game will be worth comming back.

    • I still log in daily, I enjoy it. Closing in on 900 hours now. There are big issues but I trust they'll fix them. I just finished the raid for the first time last week and had a blast. The tweaked rewards are great.

      • Why Are You Still Playing? I Don't stopped playing 2nd day of the dawning Or Why Are You Still On The Forums? Because I want to know if my analysis on when or what date bungie will formally throw in the towel and say Destiny is too expensive to keep alive, is accurate or not

        • I play both PVE and PVP and had super high hopes for destiny on PC after the beta it ran great! Had a lot of good PC features it even had partial chat.. obviously I thought that would be full chat in the final version, however it still feels like a beta or even an alpha by AAA standards, I still play simply for the visuals and gameplay in PVP it is however becoming very stale and the PC player base has become tiny, I'll be seeing destiny 2 through it's lifecycle I've already had more than my monies worth in terms of game time. But I fear the pc players won't return even after they release all the updates(finish development of the game). So much potential lost on the PC platform.

How about you?
How should I start. To be honest I was a huge COD and I stopped playing it because it was ran by Activision and it became to repetitive (same maps, same weapons but better graphics every new game). When destiny 1 was released I was hooked and was a huge fan. Now destiny 2 gets released and boom I was excited again. But long behold I was disappointed right away. I stuck around for the first dlc hoping bungie would get their crap together and boom yet again I was heart broken with the trash they gave us (weapons and armor from destiny 1, lack off raid chests like destiny 1, new lv cap felt like u accomplished nothing). I thought I was going to pull the plug but then the Xmas event kicked off and I was furious that I was not able to collect the full armor for each of my characters or sparos, emotes, ships etc..why because no matter how much u grinder u couldn't unlock the content because u where limited to how much u could collect..therefore u where forced to purchase with microtransactions the equipment....men that was a kick to the balls. To be honest bungie is single handedly forcing players to leave the game I tried to stick around but I feal like destiny is slowly turning into COD..if I am a max 335 player it should feal like it on the game play. Remember when u ran a nightfall or a raid on normal and u where a max light lv character it showed that light lv..and if u wanted a challenge u would do a hard raid where ure enemies where 2 lvs above you and if completed the rewards where the shit..well all that was taken away here killing it for me and other players well enough said..I may return when the new dlc is released in May and if I am dissapointed I think destiny will earn a spot on my R.I.P. shelf.

              • I'm a hybrid of the 2 types of forum users you mentioned plus some others that you didnt. Loved the game, then liked the game, currently bored and frustrated by the game. I harshly criticize Luke Smith, Christopher Barrett, and less directly, anyone else who made bad decisions to create controversies withing the game and community. The rest of Bungies employees are just trying to make a living. I never purposefully set out to troll anyone but, I am blunt when I think someone's crying and I will troll the trolls. I defended Bungie for the most part until the XP controversy. I don't plan on playing the game after the next dlc, and will most likely disappear from the forums as well. Don't be Jerks.

              • Iʻve been playing because I find the PVP fun but flawed and awfully crutchy (last hope, the colony, invis mostly). I think the main reason why I still play is because Iʻm still optimistic about the potential this game has. But lately, it has been getting harder and harder to justify playing. The incentive is gone and the cheesy PVP options I listed earlier are really starting to wear me down. I refuse to use those options because they take skill out of the game almost completely (I snipe and use hand cannons and switch autos around, lately Iʻve been having a lot of fun with pulses) and I still do pretty well for myself (2.3/2.2 actual KD, not KAD on ps4 and xb1). But itʻs so frustrating that the game rewards people for using weapons and perks that require no skill to achieve the same results I get, when I have to work so much harder to do well in this game.

                • I don't play anymore because Bungie doesn't respect me as a player. I still drop by the forums now and then because I want to keep tabs on if they ever get their shit together. At some point though, I'll probably not even care about that, and just delete the link off my bookmarks toolbar.

                  • I've really enjoyed reading all of the comments in this thread. It's nice to see a civil dialogue about why we're all here. For me, I'm still here because I hold out hope that Bungie will bring that spark back to the game. Like most of you in here, I too am an old gamer. I started out back on NES and have been gaming through the years. I started playing Destiny during the HoW expansion. I can honestly say that I've never put so much time into a game as I did with D1. I loved D1 so much. It had so many diverse elements that kept me coming back day after day. I loved every aspect about D1, including the bad. I never jumped on the forums to complain about D1, because I felt like there were enough good elements to balance out the bad. Plus, I had confidence in Bungie that they would fix the parts that players felt were bad. It also felt like Bungie really loved their game back then. They were always finding new and inventive ways to make the experience fun and fresh again. I loved working with my friends and family in raids trying to find hidden loot chests and figure out hidden quests. For me, it felt like Bungie respected me as a player, so I didn't mind the minor MTs when they were introduced in D1. Unfortunately, we all see where Bungie focused their efforts in D2. The problem I have with D2 is the lack of variety that D1 had. I'm bored of fighting all of the same enemies that we've been fighting for the last few years. They have the whole universe to explore and expand into. I would love to see new races of enemies or maybe guardians that have turned evil. I don't know, but I feel that Bungie needs to take some risks with D2. Make it exciting again by adding those RPG elements that D1 had. I still play D2 from time to time, but in my opinion, the game has just lost that excitement factor. I'm tired of re-skinned weapons and enemies. Most of the bosses in D2 are just oversized re-skinned mobs with a longer health bar. I would love if they added some weird looking enemies and bosses that are unique to each planet in addition to the normal enemy races. Bungie has one of the best FPSs out there. All of the weapons in D1 and D2 feel so crisp and fun to shoot. The gameplay, sound, and look of the game is fantastic. To me, their isn't a game that feels the way Destiny does. With that being said, they have a good foundation of a game with D2, they just need to fill out the game with more variety and bring back the RPG elements of D1. I would love to see new sub-classes with expanded skill trees like in D1. Having said that, I still hold out hope for D2 that it will eventually become what D1 is. I know Bungie has hit some really big bumps in the road, but I feel that Bungie can pull through this and make D2 into an amazing game.

                            • i just started playing again last week after not touching this dumpster fire for like 3 months. I turned it on because as shallow as this game is, the gameplay mechanics are still pretty good. I stay on the forums because it is hilarious to watch bungle try to clean up their own mess. It’s like watching a kid trying to clean up a pile of sh!t with a sh!t covered mop. It just keeps getting worse, and gets funnier with every smear.

One of the most interesting topics I've seen on these forums in awhile. I'm guessing, and correct me if I'm wrong, that you're trying to gain some insight into the current gaming industry and how different types of gamers react to it. Something I've spent a lot of time thinking about myself as it's my escape from the grind of work, and therefore important to me. You may be looking at this specifically from a Destiny perspective, and if so, forgive my broad response. Background: Been gaming since NES Favorite games (in no particular order): Witcher 3, MGS3, FFXI, Zelda (OOT), Mass Effect 2 Destiny Background: Played D1 through HoW. Played D2 until around November of 2017 Thoughts on D2: Fairly horrible game as-is. They seem to have sucked all the depth out of the game. D1 was a great start for a new franchise and I had high hopes for where they were going. That being said, the issue I see here is a lack of content. This is a cash-grab, plain and simple. It received relatively good reviews out of the gate because no one realized at the time that there is only about a month of worthwhile gameplay. Some say that's worth the money - I don't. The gunplay/controls are great. Incredibly intuitive. I'll give them that, but that's all. I won't go into everything they can improve, as those specifics have been outlined extensively on these forums. Gaming Industry in General: This trend of dumbing down games is becoming more prevalent, and it certainly worries me. I hope others feel the same way. If I'm the only one, then things will continue as-is and I'll have to find a new escape. EA and Activision seem to lead this charge and as they envelop more and more smaller studios they are (in my opinion only) destroying video games. Why I'm on these forums: There are a lot of comments on the toxicity here, but I don't necessarily see that as a bad thing. Personal comments on the game developers are uncalled for, but comments on what they made, in my opinion, are absolutely warranted, deserved, and need to be more visible so that the industry realizes that they can't release this garbage (again - my opinion) and expect to profit off their games for years to come. Big business only responds to profitability or lack thereof. When we stop paying for it, change will occur. At this point, I see the Destiny franchise as an acceptable casualty if it leads to industry reform. Final thoughts: To each their own. The above comments aren't an attempt to say every game needs to be made the way I like it. Some folks like this game - I get it. I just hope they aren't the majority. If so, I'm simply out of luck.
