But i thought if you were holding strong with 2 taking the third was always the best way to win

It's only viable if you're playing a particularly underskilled team. Otherwise it's best to cap the preferable 2 and leave the last to anchor spawn.

Plus you can better control the spawn points holding two.

Taking all three is streching your team too thin, making it easy for theirs to break in.
