Were you still stood on top killing your dog or did you go down into the garden?

I think I went down as I was assigned a particular dog. I wasnt really paying much attention and it was only after the fact I tried to think about what happened, so I could be wrong. Would standing on the pillars stop me from doing damage?

I am pretty sure the buff only applies once you touch the ground. At least I never see the buff on my screen until I am on ground level as I always use the gems.
