They more than likely did a bunch of technical work that would allow their current servers to run Destiny 2. Also, I would guess they installed some new servers or upgraded things, because we all know Destiny will come roaring back to life with the beta and release for D2.
Edit: Just wanted to add every DLC has been downloaded via updates a week or so in advance along with planned maintenances so that each launch is a simple flip of a switch (exaggerated a bit). They're doing the same for Destiny 2 which is a new game on a new engine with new netcode making things more complicated than a DLC release.

i know that the PC version won't even be on Bungie Servers and i thought that D2 was on it's own server, as to not have "2x" lag ratio with 2 games from 2 eras running on the same server just seems odd to me that they are working on THIS server ... doesn't vote confidence

Where are PC player servers? First I've heard of this. Servers are nothing but extra powerful computers with specialized performance for computing in certain ways. To improve Destiny 2, they need to improve the software that the servers are using. As far as using the same servers for both games, I'm sure a portion of the servers will be D1 and most will be D2. Or maybe they can run both efficiently. I'm not an engineer or anything so these are basically my thoughts on what's happening.
