1 ReplyWhy is this in lore?
-
Not always, Nightfall exotic rewards drop a bit higher, 3-4 light levels higher in my experience.
-
4 RepliesThe way light level works now is it's based off of your lowest piece of gear. I'm not sure about exotic engrams but I know weekly bounties can only drop +6 light of your lowest piece and nightfalls are +6 or 7 light above your lowest piece. The best thing to do when exotics don't decrypt quite as high is to figure out where to get upgrades for your lowest pieces of gear i.e. A cabal horde chest for primary/artifact.

3 RepliesMine have been dropping just fine, a good 5-8 light levels over actually.

They have put some kind of hidden mechanic in decrypting exotic engrams to keep players from leveling up to fast that have tons of engrams saved up. Last week in ran into the problem that my exotic engrams started decoding at 391 while my overal light level was 392. It turned out the cause of this was the light level on my boots which was only 388 while all my other gear was between 390 and 395. As soon as I upgraded my boots to 392 my engrams became 393 and 394 again (my lowest item then was a 390 special). Did some experimenting with this over the past week and it clearly shows that exotic engrams are looking at your lowest level item and drop 3-4 levels above this item. It generally is 4 levels but it seems if the difference between your highest and lowest piece is 5 levels or more your engrams will decode at only 3 levels above your lowest item. So make sure all your gear is within a few points of eachother and exotics will decode 3-4 points over your lowest piece of gear. If you have a pece of gear that is much lower than any of your other gear focus on upgrading that first before decoding any exotic engrams.

1 ReplyI think it goes by averages. So if you decrypt an exotic for say your helmet, when your current helmet is the highest light item you have, it will average out to the same or lower light as your other gear is pulling it down. To get around this i have found decrypting your lowest item first. You want all your gear to be around the same attack and defence so when you use an exotic engram, the level is higher. So, if your arms are the lowest defence, decrypt an arm emgram first.

1 ReplyEdited by Wadewilson559: 11/2/2016 5:41:59 PMIdk maybe I'm not a high enough light level to experience this yet, currently 385, but my last 2 exotics (no land beyond, and super good advice)dropped 3 to 4 levels than my level I was at when they dropped.SGA dropped at 370 I believe when I was 366 or 367,and no land beyond just dropped at 388 I think a couple days ago.i also had an LDR drop for me yesterday at 389 (also has explosive rounds and firefly)from a vanguard package

I honestly think that when something new releases, bungie raises the drop rates, then after a week or so they tone it back down. Look at last iron banner, the drops were great, I'd be willing to bet the drop rate is less during the next IB. They could do the same with light lvl, they get you hooked with some great loot and then they slow progress way down.

1 ReplyIts to keep people playing so they can show their pie charts at the dog and poney show once a month. Destiny hamster wheel going strong sir!

4 RepliesWhile it makes leveling up to max light tougher than the days of TTK, it also ensures that when you do reach 400, you almost always get 400's from the engrams instead of 399's over and over again. I like this system much better than how it used to be.
-
Anyone know how this relates to lore?
-
I stopped turning them in for now. Something is broken it seems I turned in 6 in a row. All same light level with some being 3 light levels lower.
-
To artificially increase your playtime as they think as soon as somebody gets to 400 light they stop playing. It's why I never bother grinding to max light, no need to.
-
Bc you're a 399
-
Simply to slow your progress. Last 5 I've got have been at or 1 below my light :(
-
Oh really?? I've been 399 for the past 2 weeks and every single exotic has been 399.
-
Decrypted gloves today at 394 and got 394. WTF?! Could have at least been 395.

1 ReplyEdited by WhatsKraken: 11/2/2016 11:43:48 PMPeople need to stop being butt hurt over exotics. The odds of getting an exotic are easily 5-10x greater than they were before 3oC. I remember when I used to get excited when I got one. Like the first time I finally got Icebreaker or got Gjally to drop from exotic chest in VoG. So excited! Now the exotics suck and are basically infusion fuel. Hopefully in Destiny 2 they go back to making exotics actually exotic.

Mine keep decrypting at 391 when I'm 392.

4 RepliesReading all the comments, including mine, it seems to me that the Game is now entirely a race or grind to 400. Everything else, any fun, any results, any achievements, all fall by the wayside, on that frantic attempt to get to 400. I do this exactly, and I often wonder why. Do a strike, and the effort is just to get to the end loot, to see if I go up a level. Getting there, with all the shooting, dying and various mayhem, is just an annoying distraction on the way. The only thing that makes it worth doing, is doing it with friends you get on with, and have a heap of laughs on the way. Then enjoy the moaning and bitching about the loot that we did get. So, what's left after 400?
-
Da grind yah?
-
Edited by Fridén: 11/2/2016 6:32:16 PMSeems like exotics are weighted heavily to drop at or near your current LL. (My experience.) I would assume they do this because people hold on to the engrams from update to update. Would probably be to easy to get to max light otherwise.

391, had a 394 graviton drop yesterday while wearing a 388 helmet. It lives in my batman helmet now.
-
No idea man. Feels like Destiny ninja nerfed exotics. I de-crypted 4 the other day at a 393 light level and only on pieces that were already over 395 and they all opened at 391, nothing I had equipped was under 392. I am waiting for patch notes till I open another one.
-
53 RepliesTo all the stupid morons actually explaining how to open exotic engrams, you're -blam!-ing sooo stupid. Speaking from experience i have not opened an exotic engram since i had a 399 chest and everything else was 400 then i got a exotic chest piece and guess what, it opened at 399. To answer your question. Basically, Destiny is not giving us any more new content until this so called "destiny 2". So the point is to basically slow us down and slow down our progress to 400. I mean common we used to be proud to make progress within crucible or our factions and now shit drops at 390. What a -blam!-ing joke. Exotic engrams always dropped 4 to 5 light levels above. They want us to grind and grind so that we don't complain about content.

The basic rule of light levels on all gear that drops is 2 below or equal or 2 above your current total light level. Once you cross certain light level then certain drops become is less because they are capped at a certain light. Legendary engrams are capped at 385, faction packages are capped at 390, Archons forge is capped at 385, except for ghosts, class items and artifacts and those can drop upto 400. Normal mode raid and all chests are capped at 385, except the chests that show up after the hard mode bosses are killed those can go upto 400.
