I've been meaning to get it done.
My mom got it done maybe like 10 or 15 years ago- and she was happy enough with the results. She sees distances fine now, but sometimes needs reading glasses for things up close (she was nearsighted).
Most places offer a free consult/exam, so just drop by your local centre and see what they have to say.
No idea what it costs now or where you live, but from what I remember it's not cheap, and some insurances don't cover it.

Good advice. And you're right. My insurance will only cover 300 once a year for anything eye related.
