The big issue is that there was this whole epic story lined up but they scrapped it and laid the game out as if it happened after the fact. Thats whats shitty, we had an amazing story!! But it got ripped to shreds and the remains got put into grimoire, with the game as it is now in a sort of endless, storyless limbo. The shit in the grimoire seems like it would be WAAAY more fun to play through than the shit we play through now

I don't want to doubt Staten or anything, but I can never get this thought out of my mind when I think about the story that could've been: if the story was going to be so great, why would bungie choose to get rid of it completely & start a new story from scratch, especially so close to the game's release?

This is something that has made me wonder. I've worked with large companies doing major technology projects, including some project management. You don't scrap that much work that late in the process unless something is seriously wrong. What could have went wrong? The leaks/gossip say the story was a little too weird. But the people making these decisions had to have seen the basic idea of the overall story arc early on in the process. I'm inclined to think it was just too big, with too many features and details, and they just couldn't finish it in time. So they had to scale everything back to a more basic version that included a lot of the initial details and concepts, but with big chunks of the story missing and entire areas just cut from the game. This gave Activision the perfect chance to enforce their deadline and force Bungie to release what they had. This would have made future DLC nonsensical in terms of the "new" story, so they got to sell us pieces of the original story that were finished after the fact as DLC. Which did not look good. Hopefully this means they have a ton of material set aside for Destiny 2, so they can make it a much more robust and thorough experience. They can finish the story from the initial release, include the DLC we never saw to flesh it out, and conclude the whole thing with whatever the Destiny 2 story was supposed to be. I just really hope they've taken the criticism seriously, taken the time to do the work, and are ready to make this franchise what it's meant to be. Why settle for good sales and mediocre reviews when you have the potential to make one of the most beloved series of all time? It's right there in front of them.

Your theory actually makes the most sense out of any other one I've come across. I actually like the way this story turned out in terms of ability to build on it. There's still a bunch of mystery surrounding all 4 races, so they can slowly reveal more & more about them over time. Ttk did a great job with the hive in that respect.

There could be a myriad of reasons. And we will never know. It could have come from bungie, could have come from activision, could have hit some kind of snag in the story or development. Not saying bungie is evil, but its pretty obvious that an extensive story was written for this game only to become a back story and lore as opposed to being the actual story of the game as we play it.
-
No business would completely scrap a story if they thought it was good. All the signs point to the story not being very good. Bungie literally thought "we'd be better off piecing missions together & winging a new story than running Staten's."
-
You can look at all the signs you want but the original story had a buildup, a climax and an end. The reason it got scrapped was because they couldnt stretch it out like they would have liked to. Go read one of the many articles on the subject and see what the folks that left bungie have said on the issue. This story that "wasnt good" is what the grimoire is made of, and the story in the grimoire is a hell of a lot more structured, sound and complete than all of the story we witness in game.
-
To be fair, the story they ended up making also has a buildup, climax, & end.

Edited by eleven11911: 3/9/2016 3:58:23 AMThis is exactly the thing people dont fukcing realize, if it was so great there would be no reason for them to scrap it. No business company especially one like activision would hurt a game before its release by throwing out a good story.
-
Exactly. I think people just want to believe that bungie is an evil corporation out to get them, so they'll abandon logical holes in their theories to support that belief.
-
Unfortunately, there isn't enough time to add it to the game. We can hope it is in Destiny 2 though.
-
Yea its def too late. Its just kinda sad that there was such an amazing story behind destiny but the part that we are playing through is kinda meh at best
-
It was ready too! Curse you Harold Ryan and your last minute decisions to change the game!

I knooooooooww. Destinys story now reminds me of sienfeld: its pretty damn good but its still a show about nothing ;P

Well I'm sorry that you feel that way. It doesn't matter how it used to be, just forget about that. It's what matters now, and now is awesome. I wouldn't want it any other way.
-
Its not about how it used to be. It was never like that. Its about how someone worked very hard to bring us an amazing story and it all got scrapped and cut and reworked, and now we have an EPIC backstory, with awesome history but as it sits, the story as it is now, the running story is bland. Nothing is threatening the tower. No word on how to fix traveler. Were just in a limbo, and thats my issue. Instead of placing destiny inside the great storyline, the storyline was put outside to complement the current game.
-
The thing is nobody even knows if the story before it got reworked was even good, ask yourself this, what successful company would throw out a great story right before the game's release, the story wasnt good, otherwise they wouldnt have scrapped it.
-
Where do you think all the grimoire came from? The story we were supposed to play got diced and most of it got put into the grimoire. Quite a few articles have come out on the matter. Yes, its widely accepted as fact that the story DID get scrapped and re written. What kind of company does that? I dunno, you gotta come up with your opinion of bungie on your own. Whether it came from activision or from bungie is a mystery. But it def happened.
-
Oh, okay. Sorry for misunderstanding. I do agree, however since I know the story will come, I'm not concerned with a temporary limbo. But I understand why someone would feel that way.
-
You know what would be amazing? If each grimoire turned into a playable story mission upon unlock so you can go back in time and play through it as if it was you!! Guh that would be so cool. Imagine the books of sorrow... My imagination is drooling right now lol
-
That would be -blam!-ing amazing lol but very unreasonable. There are a lot of cards. I'd settle with more in-depth cards tbh.

Edited by B0ngSaburr_Batul: 3/9/2016 10:02:18 PMI know its unreasonable. But imagine for example i dunno fighting the ahamkara as oryx or someshit. Would be badass. Or participating in the gunfight between dredgen yor and jaren ward ? It would be super cool if destiny:anthologies came out after the destiny saga finished and we could play through all the loose ends in the epic storyline
