Ok, how about this. Add a new event, The Reclamation of the Earth.
Every week, Bungie releases a Community Bounty that involves you taking the fight to the city below. These bounties would consist of challenges like:
"Kill 10 million Fallen and drive them out Guardian!"
"We need to recover our data, collect 1000 dead Ghost memory fragments so we can see what actually happened down here"
"The Cabal have set up bases throughout our city, find them, bury them."
The enemies would be slightly above raid level. Not only would this add challenge, it would give you PERMANENT end game content, and give you a REASON to want to be 320. A reason to keep pushing yourself to get better gear. With 18 people on the map, you could expect to see everything from 5-6 Devil Walkers on the ground at the same time, to armies of Arcon Priests roaming the streets. Imagine seeing about 30 dropships landing down all at once.
It would allow 18 people in a lobby and have matchmaking. 6 man Fireteams would be supported as well. The community would have that entire week to come together and conquer the bounty.
Doing so would unlock a section of the city, that would host new vendors, and an open area you could explore freely. As the weeks went on, you would continue to expand and gain content via The City.
Eventually you would unlock areas such as Hangers or Garages where you could customize your vehicles with parts salvaged from the open world. You could even visit clothes shops or hair salons to remake your character, for a fee of course.
With 52 weeks a year, a 10 year plan, and a massive, almost endless City below the tower, they could even incorporate this as a lasting event mode. At the end if 10 years we could have reclaimed our planet.
All of this would finally give the players a sense of progression. A sense of moving on, that you're winning the fight against the Darkness, and it would pull the community together to challenge Bungie and their Bounties.
I pray to God Bungie reads this, so if you support this idea, bump the holy hell out of this!

Bump again
-
Something like that would need hundreds of players, which would screw it up completely with red-bars
-
This would take actual time and work two things bungie doesn't put into this game, they are to busy swimming in money to care
-
Old generation consoles cannot handle that and Bungie is committed (for better or worse and we do know which one it is) to provide Destiny as a service to widest audience... In a way they are responsible for their own limitations…

Buummp

It's sad that people think this would take large system requirements, it wouldn't and the current gen can handle it. Last gen can't but why hold back when it would add so much depth to this game. I was expecting these kind of events from the git. That we didn't have them was disappointing but Destiny has been fun. Back on point, if the game engine would find any of these tasks too much then damn. We do need more events such as "the enemy are moving against each other". Those are nuts and make Destiny feel like we are fighting to hold onto something. Oh yeah, bump to the OP's idea!

Necrobump.
-
I would love this but realistically we won't see something this large anytime soon with destiny.
-
If bungie does not do this, I will snap destiny if half and through it in s paper shredder... Wait I already did that.
-
Great idea
-
Dude, you should work for Bungie in the 'Creative Design' division! That is an awesome idea. If they implemented1/20 of what you propose, they would be miles ahead of this!!
-
They should do this. Ubisoft did in Assassins Creed 4.
-
Bump again
-
Very good idea, me and my friends once went outside the cosmodrone wall and pictured 10 devil walkers just roaming around
-
So gta destiny?
-
-
-
-
That would take real originality and effort on their part.... Good luck!

-
Bump, if they had this and open world pvp, this game would be fantastic
-
Please Bungie listen to people like the OP and not people that ask to nerf everything.
