Bungie seriously shot themselves in the foot with this...If you are going to make something addictive, you have to keep your addicts on the hook.
For example this game has been referred to the "SLOT MACHINE" of AAA games in regards to the behavioral science behind it..
Well slot machines are found in Casino's so to me a fair analogy would to look at how Casino's operate.
To bring in customers and keep them there, Casino's have discounted or free alcohol and food. Spectacular shows and events, flashing lights etc lol They have cheap slot machines and tables, to give people a "Taste" of wining to get more and more addicted. The know the longer you stay there the more likely and more money you are going to gamble, why else do you think they also have cheap hotel rooms.
Now what does this have to do with Destiny? Like any addiction, once you break it you will resist and try your hardest to never to never go back!
By shunning Non-TTK players, they have essentially kicked them out of the casino. Instead of seeing all the bright lights, and people winning large sums of money, which makes you want to put in money and play. They shut the door and locked it.
I know for myself, I don't know what single one of their new guns are nor do I even care anymore it's been that long since I played... But if I had an actual reason to log in, I'm sure I'd see one I'm jealous of, and I'd maybe break down and buy TTK. Or I'd be talking to my raid buddies and feel like I'm missing out.. But since being cut off cold turkey, I actually finding the idea of playing Destiny to be "disgusting"
I see these little events like the "Festival of the lost" and I kinda laugh...Bungie wants to draw you in like a casino does, but they don't want to give you the free drinks, or cheap entertainment (Content) that goes with it.

Edited by Rmtrx: 10/31/2015 7:54:59 AMEven worse: they did not provided for free some aspects to addict us, but removed aspects that we BOUGHT. Imagine a casino in which you gamble 100$ to 5 black. You put the money to the table full of James Bond confidence, and then you have the croupier taking the money and tell you that "either you add 40$ or you leave the table NOW." SO you have to pay more in order to roll the roulette. This is the exact analogy. The last croupier that did this to JB met this reaction. Seems to me, they implemented a cleaning house policy. They know most people who didnt want to keep paying into Destiny would most likely come back for Destiny 2. And if they were allowed to stay and voice displeasure, it would be much worse than what we see here, on Bnet. Remove the people who arent paying, keep sucking blood from the ones who do. Rinse, repeat. Either way, Destiny 1 has made its money. Now its bonus round time.

Edited by x Silver cRoW x: 10/30/2015 3:29:21 PMPerfect argument. I thought for sure they would treat this expansion like the others before it and allow players who didn't own the expansion to rank up to 40, aquire weapons and just be locked out of the actual "new" content. I would be more likely to buy the expansion if I had a taste of it than I am now that I don't play the game at all.

i'm guessing you also read one little article on gamasutra. anyways, not sure how much you've learned about the festival. at this time, there is one mask (skull mask) to believed to be only obtainable by purchasing mystery bags for silver. all people get one free chance. after that, it's real money for rng at the mask and some people have posted spending $15, $18, even $40 trying to get the mask. some don't get it. how is that for casino?

I haven't read the article yet, but I watched a vid a few months ago about Destiny being "Addictive" which mentioned slot machines etc. It doesn't surprise me about the Mask, unfortunately IMHO it's only going to get worse..

not sure what video you're referring to.there was a forum post some time ago with the article link. you should read the article. it's a good read and really helps understand why rewards are set up the way they are. even after people have expressed they're disapproval of lack of direct paths to exotics, most exotics being completely random, bungie has attempted to keep bringing players back every day by having time locked content, or exotics you can gain only by playing on specific days, which are also random.
