Here Here, I fully support you on Bungie's efforts to make gameplay better and see built in item manager as a huge step in the right direction. I really just wish there was a way to see all characters laid out at once so you can see what gear you have on what person. For the way I think about my characters the layout from DIM seems very intuitive, the bungie one seems like there may be a lot of guess work about where an item is. For me I use it a lot to prep my character on breaks at work to be ready for play when I get home and it makes it real easy when you can see all three next to each other and just swap what you need.
