Okay, so the first thing most everyone does when they get to the tower is run to the Cryptarch, and spam X until all of their engrams are decrypted.
Don't do this!
Engrams decrypt into a light level based on your CURRENT Light Level. This means, before you decrypt, make sure you equip all of your strongest gear. Then, only decrypt one engram at a time and check to see if its higher light. If it is, equip that one and then decrypt another. You can gain 10 light levels with just a couple blues if you do it this way.
One thing I noticed is, do not decrypt two of the same armor pieces in a row, especially if you just equipped a higher version.
For example, I found that if your current gloves are at 250, you decrypt a blue and it is 265, equip that one and you go to immediately do another glove it will be 250~.. move on to another armor slot first and then come back to the gloves.
(FYI) I jumped into the Heroic Vanguard at 259 and after 7 games I was 280
Edit 2: now I'm light level 292 with this method
Good luck out there guardians!

2 RepliesBought a chest engram from the cryptarch last night, he gave me an artifact. The dick is still a major troll.

Good Idea

29 RepliesThis is not the best way to get to 290+, at least in the long run. Get good legendary gear with perks that you like, then infuse it with any rare piece of gear that has a higher stat. If you just keep equipping the highest value rare, you'll eventually end up level 295+ with little to no legendary gear, and it'll be extremely hard to find some that has a higher stat value then the rares you are already wearing, meaning that at some point you'll have to settle for legendary gear with a lower value and infuse them anyway. This also means that you'll just have to settle with whatever legendary gear you happen to get from engrams, whether it's good or not, instead of being able to pick and choose and get the perks you want. Trust me, once you get to level 290+ with a set of legendary gear that works together, you'll be glad that you did it that way.

I'm decrypting the weapon engrams for my other 2 characters once I start using them. I have to get to 290 with my Titan first(currently at 281 I stopped playing). I finally understand the basis of infusion. Also you if you get doubles of exotics don't dismantle them. Infuse the ones you don't want into legendary gear.

11 RepliesFalse. Engrams are coded when they drop. That's why you can't save them for after a new DLC drop. Sorry to burst your bubble.

4 RepliesAren't they already pre- determined? Like how HoW engrams wouldn't decrypt for TTK

I really wish I knew this before...
-
Thanks man, that's handy to know!! Too bad I've decrypted so many already :(

Thank OP.

6 RepliesIs there any specific way to get a new artifact BECUASE I can't get one, all I have is the lame 200 defense one
-
Yeah I noticed this the last few days. I started doing this and getting slightly stronger stuff. Good info.

4 RepliesSo when an engrams drops, it hasn't technically been decided what that item is yet? I didn't know about this method. I always thought the item was decided when it dropped. Thanks for the info. Went from 230 to 253 earlier from infusing stuff. This should help too.

2 RepliesThis is true but you don't have to be that cautious when decrypting engrams imo. Play through the quests until you're about 260 then play through the strike playlist quest (5 normal strikes, 5 heroic strikes, 1 NF) and you get a 300 attack special as a reward. The quest gear has a set light value so you might as well play through those and use that gear while it provides you a light spike. After you're able to play through heroics I guess you can do the cautious engram strat since you'll be getting 280's now and then and that 's a noticeable difference. Once you hit 280-290 it doesn't matter much and you really want to start leveling legendaries and infusing them. Also the most important thing you can buy with your legendary marks early on is a ghost shell imo since they're mega rare and having a 280 ghost helps your light level a lot.

I'm sorry I thought the was obvious.. I would have posted day one.

Can confirm. Had three helmet Engrams. Had one with 243 equipped, Engram turned into 255 one. Closed the Cryptarch menu, equipped it and got one with 265. Repeated this and got one with 268.
