People discriminate all the time.
Countries discriminate on the basis of nationality, requiring you to be a citizen to vote, own property, etc. — they discriminate against foreigners.
Companies only hire you if you have knowledge and experience — they discriminate against those with no education or skills.
Banks only lend to you if they think you can pay them back — they discriminate against those with poor credit records or low income.
Sports teams discriminate against the weak or slow. They discriminate on the basis of gender too — men play on the men's team, women on the women's.
Everyone discriminates against the ugly or socially awkward, constantly.
Some of these you may consider okay. Some not.
So, what makes some kinds of discrimination OK and others not? When is it not OK to discriminate?

When what you're discriminating against isn't relevant. If you're recruiting for a removals person, it's ok to discriminate against someone with advanced motor neurone disease for example, because being able to manoeuvre heavy objects up and down stairs is a day-to-day requirement of the job, which this person will not be able to fulfil. It is not ok to discriminate against them if they are perfectly able to fulfil the job requirements, but they are Asian, because them being Asian has nothing to do with doing the job.

1 ReplyEdited by Lance: 7/24/2015 6:14:02 AMWhen being discriminatory will benefit you. I discriminate against shady dudes in black hoodies, therefore I will cross the street when they're walking towards me. Edit: Whoops, answered the wrong question. OT: When you don't gain. Mindlessly hating a black dude just because he's black doesn't help you.

9 RepliesLiving in LA, I discriminate against everybody. I don't care if you're black, white, red, yellow, or blue. You're just as likely to mug me or harass me as the next person. Only reason nobody screws with me when I have to walk to the nearby CVS at night.
