Do you need to purchase The Taken King to get VIP rewards?

Hey Bungie, do we need to purchase The Taken King in order to receive the VIP rewards? I've heard a couple different opinions and wanted to clarify. Thanks!

To qualify for the VIP rewards, you must: 1) Have a level 30 guardian OR own both year 1 expansions, by August 31, 2015. 2) Purchase and play The Taken King, by February 1, 2016.
