Why do you Like Assassin's Creed II? I thought it was bad.

I have played Assassin's Creed II, Assassin's Creed III, Assassin's Creed IV, and Assassin's Creed: Unity. Honestly I found Assassins Creed II to be really bad. I got it for free with Games with gold almost two years ago, and I haven't been impressed by it other than the location. I found the story to be really flat and uninteresting, not to mention slow and the immersion was non existent. The voice acting was atrocious. Sometimes it was worse than Connor Kenway's, wooden dialogue. The accents were despicable and obviously fake to the point I was literally cringing when I heard words come out of my speakers that were improperly synced to the movement of the characters mouths. The gameplay itself was the epitome of mediocrity. It's miles behind being 'good'. The movement was clunky, the parkour/free-running was frustratingly inaccurate, the combat had no fluidity, and the couldn't stand the glitchy-ness that ensued with its execution. My question to #Gaming is; why is this considered the best in the series? It nowhere near lives up to some of the other Assassin's Creed titles in multiple ways. Honestly the only thing I see going for it is the nostalgia factor.

  • I bought AC 2 when it was free for gold, and it was pretty fun. I prefer Black Flag but in no means was AC 2 bad. Sure, the horse riding and open world outside the cities was pretty poor, and the sword fighting could be pretty messed up sometimes, but nearly everything else was above average. The characters, the movement, the AI (for its time) and I really enjoyed the secret vaults underneath the cities. I must say however that it has very little replay value. After completing it, I say no reason to go back and get all the collectibles and achievements, but maybe that's just the kind of guy I am. I understand why you don't like it. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. But the game was pretty impressive from most other people perspective, and for the time it was released.

  • You didn't play it when it came out. Obviously it's going to be a step backwards from newer installments. That's like expecting an old clapped up banger to be better than a Bentley.

    • Because it was a step in the right direction, then on it was copy and paste until 3 (which was truly awful), 4 was great, unity meh, haven't played rouge, 2 was good since the character progression of Ezio was amazing, it also incorporated everything you collected and learned

    • My favorite is probably brotherhood for the assassin recruits, but I always wear the Altaïr skin so I look like him, because Altaïr is my favorite assassin. My second favorite AC game is black flag.

    • The story is great, and ezio is probably the best character in the series imo.

      • III and Unity were unfinished shit fests and you're honestly saying II is worse? I'm all for the argument saying AC is overblown but come on. Stop and think about the sheer amount of bullshit that comes with Unity.

        • It has a wonderful story... much more than any AC game after it. I quit playing them because they all became the same after Brotherhood (or Revelations? Didn't like the very last one with really old Ezio). I enjoyed that one but after that they got very bland.... I had AC II, Brotherhood, Revelation, III, and Black Flag. I traded in III and Revelations. I bought Black Flag hopong for a change of pace but its ok. Its fun but I haven't finished it.

        • My only question is how did they make the first look better than the second. Also I kinda like AC except when your character doesn't follow your controls

          • *spoiler alert* I loved them all. My only complaint was how b*tchy Connor was. I just couldn't like him and I tried really hard. I actually hated him after he killed Haythem. I think Unity got a raw deal in reviews. It had some bugs but damn what a beautiful game. I find myself taking tours of random palaces and lively streets. I have a pretty smoking TV that helps me notice every detail. The detail in Unity is difficult to compare. The gameplay is solid but the story isn't that engaging unfortunately. I'm a gameplay first and story second kind of guy so it's ok for me. AC4 Black Flag is my favorite. Black Beard was the freagin coolest lol

            • Back in 2009 it was astounding. You have to keep in mind that AC1 was hyped as -blam!-, the first truly open world next-gen game with revolutionary ideas that have since been copied to death. It was ultimately a 7/10 game on a 9/10 engine but the potential was real. AC2 delivered a 9/10 game on that 9/10 engine. More gameplay variety, a better world, and a story and main character leaps and bounds above the first game. And back then it was the second game so was still a pretty new and fresh experience, plus the modern day plot was still gripping. The demo at E3 2009 blew my mind. Now it's a series milked to death. I got bored during AC4 eventually and couldn't even get passed the first few hours of Unity. Not really interesting in Victory. It's a shame.

            • If you got it when it first came out then you'd understand why it was such a great game. Obviously there were improvements in the later games.

Maybe because during that time there were no such things as AC 3, AC IV, AC V (topkek) and so on. Yes it has the nostalgia factor but AC 2 introduced us to a new more emotional protagonist, a story of vengeance and justice that actually clicked with fans and newcomers alike, It also brought plenty of the game mechanics the new AC games have like swimming, more ways to kill, etc. It also spanned multiple spin-off sequels (Brotherhood which introduced a more mature Ezio getting the hangs of being the leader of the brotherhood and Revelations which was a closing point for one of the series best Protagonists.) If it wasn't for AC 2 the franchise wouldn't have evolved the way it did.

You're talking about things that have improved with time. It's an old game and yet most AC fans think it's the best of them all. It had an interesting story, relatable and interesting main character, fun side characters, solid gameplay mechanics(they were a huge step up since AC 1). Sure, the quality and gameplay is clunky and bad for the standards to day, but that's how it is with older games. That's why it shines so much though, because it still lives up to the AC games even until this day. The newer ones lack a lot of things that couldn't have been fixed with better technology, they're just bad games. AC 3 had a dull and boring story, and IMO Connor was more clunky than Ezio, AC 4 was fun but it lacked anything that had to do with Assassin's Creed, it was just a pirate simulator with a very slow story(it didn't really start until you half of the game in) and I haven't played Unity, I kind of gave up on AC after the fourth one. I did play AC Rogue, that one was real great, did what AC 4 should have done. It brought in an interesting character with an interesting story arch, fun gameplay and story. My ranking is from best to the worst: AC Brotherhood, AC II, AC Rogue, AC 4, AC Revelations, AC 3.

Because it was pretty new and badass when it actually came out years ago. I loved the setting, the story was alright, -blam!-in loved the music which helped a bit with immersion, and the combat was satisfying. I tend to really enjoy games that I dont hype up either

                • Because you didn't play it when it came out, that's probably why you think it was bad. Plus you also have to consider that every AC game afterwards was pretty much the same (barring AC4) so it was the first time they'd 'refined the formula' so to speak after AC1 was the train wreck that it was.

                • I have played every single AC game since day one so its easy for me to say ACII is by far among the best if not the very best game in that franchise. ACIII was boring and AC Unity was broken and served no purpose. Definitely the two worst. AC Rouge and AC Brotherhood were fantastic imo as well as ACIV Black Flag. The original AC and AC Revelations were solid games and interesting to say the least but were only good enough to be in the middle of my list. My List:
Assassins Creed II [9.4/10] Assassins Creed Brotherhood [9/10] Assassins Creed Rogue & Black Flag [8.8/10] Assassins Creed [8.4/10] Assassins Creed Revelations [8.3/10] Assassins Creed Unity [7.3/10] Assassins Creed III [6.9/10]
I predict Assassins Creed Victory to be somewhere around an 8.7/10 according to the list above.

I liked the original Assassin's Creed more than AC2. I honestly don't get the immense praise for the game either. I didn't care for the primary target assassinating the most; the only character I really appreciated was Ezio, but that was it.I really dig how the original game set up you assassinating your primary targets, which I felt was lacking in AC2.

                  • I couldn't agree more. I thought the controls were crap and the game wasn't even close to the hype. Honestly, that series in itself is way overrated and needs to die off.
