K/d is the best indicator we have of skill, but it is not the end all/be all.
I'm sure there are some godly snipers with the touch of an angel out there that can headshot all day on skyshock and shores of time. But those players on anamoly have a bad time due to "shotgun sliding scrubs".
K/d does show how good you are at adapting to all circumstances and your general offensive vs defensive capabilities.

That's how I feel. There's a reason the guys with higher KD are the leaders in even control games. Especially since destiny control is basicallly death match anyway.
