Well, I wanna see the beard, but I can't follow you, I always get the max followers error, no matter how many people I unfollow.

Probably because you have friended a bunch of people after you hit the limit, that's the only way to go over 100, but unfollowing someone won't let you in turn follow a new person since you are still over 100.

Following 174. Sheeeeyit. So I guess I went over 100 before they put a limit on. Could have told us.

I think you have just friended a bunch of people(which auto follows them)after you hit the limit, unless was the cap not always in place? I assumed it was.
