In any sort of game like this, where they want it to be a large build up for a large enemy, you can't just throw it all at the final boss and off handedly mention the main boss for the original installment. But that's what bungie did.
It's debatable whether the main evil was the black heart or atheon, but whichever it would be we just fight them with no real knowledge of why.
There needs to be a hatred brewed into us, and tossing us back and forth from enemy to enemy didn't accomplish that. We hate the Fallen because they attack the tower, we hate the hive because they want to take over the earth, we hate the vex because they hate everyone, and we hate the cabal because they're a strong military.
That's the impression you get simply from what's given, but it all goes much deeper than that.
I'm not saying destiny is a bad game, I'm not saying it doesn't have a fantastic story, I'm not saying bungie ripped us off. I'm not saying anything like that.
I'm just saying they went about telling the story in a poor manner, but it really feels like they're learning as they go. If you love the game now, then great I expect it will only make you happy. If you dislike it and play on and off, then make sure you come back because I'm confident the story telling will improve. And if you hate the game and will never be willing to give it another chance, then that's your decision but please just leave your poison out of the forums.

Good to see there's more than a few people that agree, destiny has a great underlying story, it's just poorly implemented.
edit 2
In regards to the many who claim the lead writer left months/weeks/days before the release.
Think about what you just said. They can't change a story that soon, he likely left because he didn't like the way they went about telling the story. He wanted a visual experience, as was said early on, they wanted a more cryptic gear driven story, and they did a good job at that in some aspects, but failed in more.
Listen if you don't think there's a story it's because you're refusing to open your eyes and read the cards. I'm not saying that you should have to read them to get the story, you shouldn't, you should however have to read them to understand the finer details.
I'm AnonPig, I write posts explaining the cards, I formulate, with the help of my fantastic clan, the most logical conclusions to where the story has been and where it will go. If you have any questions on the story, ask me I LOVE to talk about it. But don't just come here and go "there's no story pffffttt" because I don't want to hear your lazy excuses. I'm sorry for being an ass, but it's not worth the bump.

Like this. It's all foundational. Could it have been better? Yes. But I get more out of some of those Grimoire stories (Rasputin, Exo, Vex, etc.) than an entire game of action-packed cutscenes. It's all in how open your mind is. You want McDonalds (turn off your brain and enjoy) this isn't exactly it. But if you want something with flavor that lasts, let's see where destiny goes. Ps there is some phenomenal stuff out together by fans regarding the opening cut scene and Yuga/Voluspa. I'm loving it and can't wait for more!

9 RepliesEdited by Grzzldgamer: 3/4/2015 2:36:01 PMIt's more simple. Activision changed the story during beta. They didn't want traveler to be evil. They wanted to market the traveller like the halo ring from halo. Links exists about all this. 60% of actors lines were cut from game, planets lost, parts of the game story hewn off to be sold as "dlcs" when they were originally part of the game. Greedy activision.

There wasn't a story to fall flat to begin with

4 RepliesWell... the lead writer quit a few weeks before launch... that should tell you something about how the new Bungie Studio operates. Also... my comment had a better story than the entire game.
-
The story went too big too soon if that's possible with so little story. For me a logical story progression would have seen us making Earth a secure planet to live on before we went fighting enemies on the Moon, Venus and Mars.

1 ReplyAs far as I've known Bungie, they've never really been good at story telling in their video games. Usually it's the gameplay alone that kept gamers going, the multiplayer. Playing with friends. The Halo series with Bungie got much better as they progressed, so I don't really know why they took the route they did for Destiny.. It's like they just got rid of everything they learned and started as a fresh company.

1 ReplyThe lore definitely is fantastic. Hell the fan fiction is some of the greatest stuff I've read. I just wish that we were able to experience or see this in game.

Story in Destiny? I've never heard of such a thing!

Edited by The 75th Zebra: 3/4/2015 2:31:26 PMMaybe it's because they took out 2 F.ucking planets.

3 RepliesLol, what story? I never knew Destiny had one.

Edited by Kone19ps: 3/4/2015 2:28:25 PMI think the biggest problem with this story is they subscribed to a model of storytelling that worked well due to the rest of the immersion elements of the game. Dark souls The creators have openly stated they took heavy influence from dark souls and it shows. From game mechanics to story elements. The problem is destiny lacks what made that indirect story telling work. Dark souls was open world. Right there you have a level of immersion destiny can't touch. The constant back to orbit kills the momentum almost entirely sometimes. Dark souls also had a progressive story. Besides new game plus repetition is mostly limited. You may go over the same area more than a few times to farm or backtrack, but there is usually something to find to help you or explore that enriches the lore rather than just looking pretty. Besides dead ghosts and nearly identical chests there's nothin to find really. Loot was not random in dark souls. It was placed with a purpose and a story behind it. Destiny attempts to enrich it's lore using weapon and armor descriptions, but when the loot is random it doesn't feel grounded in the game story at all. Dark souls was as specific as where Kirk of thorns armor is found is one of the only reasons we know he was a chaos servant. Even the only thing that is sometimes planet specific are the dead ghosts, but most are Easter egg classic locations, not where those guardians would have died. Character creation. I don't think I need to say more considering you have less choice than a South Park character creator in destiny. Npcs are a joke in destiny compared to dark souls and the depth of area driven storytelling is leagues ahead of destiny. I have to go to work otherwise id go three times as long as this but basically destiny based it's game off a model that depends heavily on well thought out and specific game complexity and engrossing game immersion. Destiny is just a pitiful attempt at applied lore and kills immersion at every step. It's like bungie took the ideas they saw in dark souls, went oh that's cool we kinda see what the old head writer was going towards, and then ignored all the game elements that brought that story telling to life because it's "too complicated"

3 RepliesThe lore is amazing, even if the names could be better and more original. But it's poorly told in the story or not told at all. At the very least we need to be able to access the Information within the game in a codex or something. Not have to read it on my phone or PC.

4 RepliesI like cereal

1 ReplyI can only see a story on Earth and start of the moon. That is the only story I can see.

I actually think the biggest problem stems from the fact that Destiny pulls from shared-world, MMO elements. Shared world games have a hard time telling "epic" stories, because the entire game world is required to be static. Nothing that happens through the course of the story can affect the game world in any way, otherwise it would mess things up for the next player who comes along. There's no opportunity for player choice, because my choices can't change the world for another player. That boss you just killed? He's gonna respawn in 60 seconds so the next player on patrol can take a shot at him. There's a big disconnect. Destiny treats you like a conquering hero while you're standing next to a guy 7 levels higher than you with the best gear in the game. Maybe this guy is even your buddy who power leveled you through half the game. Do I think Destiny could have done a better job...? Yeah, sure, but the game style doesn't leave them much to work with. And while I like the grimoire, why it was left out of the game itself is beyond me. At least let me read it in the Tower. I'm personally in a camp that kind of likes the mystery. I justify it like this, humanity is emerging from centuries of dark ages, so literally no one knows what's going on. It's all myth and legend. Think of how much human history was lost in our own, real life dark age. It's not a huge stretch to apply that to the game. And I think you're supposed to take Ghost at his word, when he says, "You're going to see some things you won't understand."

The story is in the grimoire. We need to read. Seems in the time since we died and were resurrected by good ole dinklebot most guardians forgot how to read and want the story told to them or played out for them too see.
-
I think everyone misses the point. Become Legend. The way I see that is to blaze your own path and find a way to become legend. If there was a definitive start/end story then everyone would be the same, and have seen all the same. I think their goal was to create the grimoire to showcase certain mysterious tales and lore that all let you use your imagination about past guardian legends, and at the same time unlocking more and more grim cards you're supposedly writing your own. I guess a for instance would be if you went into someone's grim and they had over 10000 Rumble wins, well, they'd be a legend from the Rumble arena. Same goes for PvE, some people have cleared an ungodly amount of raids, makes them a legend in their own right. Is it repetitive? Yes. But I think that was the point of not having a start/end story, becoming legend, not, killing a final boss.

I was under the impression the first game will be a prologue. We won't really know much About what is going on and it seems no one wants to tell us until we prove ourselves worthy. The the DLC was a vast improvement, though still lacking. Eris tells you bits and pieces of the story of her past, the grimoire holds even more. I am not saying omg look it's a story line, it's not quite there. The HoW will still have a broke story I am 100% sure but I am hoping comet will have more! Perhaps that's where it will really start.
-
Apparently if you want a story you have to read the grimoire, which just happens to be here and not in game. They must have been smoking the reefer the day they thought of that idea...

Because there isn't one?

3 RepliesI think we should ally the fallen

1 ReplyI don't get why we have to kill the heart anyway. Vex are still around in patrols etc.

I wish they had a flashback mission to the battle at the twilight gap.

Destiny has a story.......REALLY?
-
2 RepliesI can agree with this slightly, but id guess that this is the tip of the iceberg as far as the story goes. For example people mention that cutscene with the queens brother, and speculate that the speaker may be evil, which at this stage would be way to early for a significant plot twist.
