My experience at the Destiny Community Summit

It's taken me a little longer to post this than I'd hoped, but it obviously was a crazy week for me and I did not get back home until late yesterday evening and was pretty jet lagged today. There is a lot of speculation and discussion about the Destiny Community Summit and I know my fellow attendees have been posting their thoughts, so here are my impressions of the event. To begin I want to say that I understand how incredibly fortunate I was to be invited to be a part of this. I know all the speculations going in about motivations by who was on the list and even within the group of attendees there was a wide range of opinions on what the event would be. I believed the first and foremost reason for the summit and most important goal would be to try to rebuild and repair the relationship between the community and developers, beyond that we had a lot of discussions before hand of what the community would like addressed/discussed. To that end I wrote up a summary of those discussions to take with me as things I hoped we could cover. As this will go well beyond the forum word limit, I’m going to link the sections below. Thoughts and hopes going in Day 1 experience Day 2 experience My fellow attendees have written and talked about what their experiences were and I know there is still skepticism in the community as to motivations and intent on all sides, but this event was literally everything I hoped it might be and then somehow proceeded to exceed that exponentially. I’m as hopeful for the future of a Bungie game as I’ve ever been. Thank you. Edit: I want to add something else to this as I've been seeing and reading takes on the summit and I want as honest a narrative as possible. I don't agree with any notion that this is the first time Bungie has listened and that their listening to us at the summit is going to potentially "save the game". I feel that discounts things we were shown already being developed as well as not only easily identifiable player impact throughout D1, but everything that we've seen in developer comments, TWaBs, updates and roadmaps since launch. I know we did have very direct impact on some things and were very helpful in thoughts and opinions on a lot of things going forward at the summit, but I don't want to take anything away from the impact of your feedback and the things we already saw them doing and/or know are coming/in development that are directly from them listening to the community at large. What I saw was a company that has heard your voices and feedback on the game and this summit was another step in that process and a chance for more intimate face-to-face discussions on those thoughts and ideas. Thank you again.
The measure of this moment is the measure of the hope it can bring and if it's gonna make a difference, the difference will be easy to see. -Swell
• You know... I really don't understand how people believe being as toxic as they are is going to help anything. If you are done with Bungie and this franchise then why are you here fanning a flame that the majority of people want to try and put out to fix. At the very least be skeptical. That is the default position that one can be respected for. Personally I don't care what Sols asked at the summit because other people that went there already told their communities what they would be discussing. Meylien put together an excellent list of community concerns over the lore. Mtashed was brutal with his bluntness and Gothalion is one of the most honest content creators out there. He is brutal to everyone, even Gearbox during the old Pre-Sequel fiasco that was addressed far too late. Sols, don't communicate with these forums. Its just toxic at this point. No room for general discussion or skepticism, if you aren't toxic towards the game you are not welcomed here. Reddit at least has common sense.

    • My problem with the summit is this... They bought all you guys in, community members, streamers, content creators etc. who can relay our opinions and wants and ask the questions we've been asking since the beginning. You asked those questions, you got answers to those questions, but we can't know. We'll be given glimpses of new content, changes in the future, but the answers we are seeking are still unanswered, to the majority of people still playing. This is why there is still skepticism, doubt and anger in the community. I've seen countless posts questioning this summit as nothing but a PR stunt and without actually giving anything back to the community - they could very well be right

    • Game has been out since 201-2014 and they are just now hearing our voice? if they really want to make good give the next dlc for free invest in players as they have invested in you.I'm guessing they are counting on your kind to try and turn the hearts of the player base well good luck. You are are being pimped and don't even know it.

      • This reminds me of a while back in a career not far away, when my store manager would come back from a team building event all encouraged and ready to seize the day....only to find out a week later that it's the same old bullshit.

      • Yeah, all I needed to hear was that you felt incredibly fortunate. You basically have no credibility after that. You were swooning before you even started.

      •
So as we sit on the eve of the Destiny Community Summit, I wanted to take a minute to put down my hopes for this event. First and foremost it’s my hope that this is a step in rebuilding the relationship between Bungie and the community. Beyond that I want the same thing as everyone else, for the Destiny franchise to be the greatest it can possibly be. Gameplay wise my greatest hope is that we never have to go backwards or sideways again. That D2 doesn’t have to reset us and leave these worlds and things we achieve, collect and love behind again, but instead grows and expands the universe. I know we are going to get a chance to see content most likely from the fall expansion and give feedback on that before it is finalized and I very much look forward to that, particularly if we are able to give feedback on the upcoming weapon slot changes and mods 2.0 To the gameplay itself, there are a lot of opinions and everyone has a vision of what they would like that to be and I’ve been reading and thinking about this a lot for a long time now, but it’s been really cool these last two weeks really getting into deep discussions of all those points of view. Here are the things that I hope are addressed (not in any particular order), if not all at the Summit, then in future discussions with Bungie about the game. • PvE – Don’t make it an afterthought particularly in discussions on balance. • Solo play –I would like to see better developed and more meaningful endgame for solo players. - To this end I would like to see the Prestige Nightfalls have timers adjusted if players are running solo (joining in-progress would be disabled). - I would also like to see the campaign fully replayable at Prestige difficulty with endgame armor and weapon sets as well as ship, sparrow, ghost, etc. - I would like to also see improvements to Lost Sectors and Patrols. A return of hidden collectibles around the worlds like the D1 Ghosts and fragments. • Story/Lore- I want to see this become a greater focus in the game not just because it’s awesome and it’s something we all want, but for all the ways that it can extend the experience and help and exploration and grind to the game. I’m very interested to hear Myelingames give his thoughts on this. Something I would like to see myself is the return of optional extended versions of missions like Paradox and its search for Praedyth’s Ghosts in D1. To me that was the pinnacle of in-game lore and my favorite solo experience in all of D1. Destiny 2 has a really rich universe and some wonderful stories and character development (Failsafe is my favorite) and I’d like to be able to dig more into the history of the people who make up these worlds. • An expanding universe and gameplay- I want to see the game progress and add new things to do, to collect and to explore, new game modes (PvE arenas, PvP big team battle), new weapon and armor sets, new weapons types, deeper story and lore in the game, more strikes, more missions, more quests; PvP maps and game modes that innovate play, add verticality and are more tactical. I'd like to see Bungie build onto D2 and innovate with it through what we've all learned the last 3 ½ years using the best parts of both D1 and D2 to really make the game the best it can be. • Modifications to the weapon system that everyone can love- This is something that is already being addressed in the fall update, but it’s still worth putting down here. People are very passionate about this both ways, in fact I love the new and my best friend loved the old. Neither is wrong and neither is bad and both systems have their advantages and disadvantages. My hope is that Bungie can find a way to take the best parts of both and create something again, that everyone can love and that is fun. • RNG, rerolling and random/static rolls- This is something I posted about yesterday so I’m not going to go in-depth here, but I will say that just like the weapon systems, this is something that Guardians are passionate about on all sides and no one is wrong because the game is different things to everyone. I would like to see again D2 be able to put together the best of what’s worked in both games and make a system that gives a deep endgame for the grinders while also not being punishing on those who are only able to login sporadically. I’ve heard the Division handles this well, but I’m unfamiliar with their systems. • Better content gating and an improved leveling experience- This is something that I’ve wanted since before D2 launched. I want to see initial releases focusing on the campaigns, strikes, Nightfalls and quests and building up to raid releases (much like WoW builds up expansions). Part of this would also be dependent of the return of meaningful power levels which it sounds like are returning. -The leveling experience is something that I would like to hear more opinions on. I’ve heard Monster Hunter and Warframe referenced as good blueprints as well. -This also ties back to making the campaign fully replayable at higher difficulties. Currently it is a massive amount of content that is for the most part wasted. Make it a true endgame challenge with rewards that live up to that challenge and I think it is an easy fix to a big part of what is missing in D2. • Some default in-game chat- This is kind of an albatross because some people just tend to be really awful to others in random chats, but the fact is that Destiny is an online open-world multiplayer experience and if that is what it wants to be than it needs to embrace that inside of the game communication options at some point. What I would like to see is chat be opt-in by default for competitive PvP, Iron Banner and Heroic Strikes. There would need to be features in place to easily mute, vote to kick and other ways to stop problems before they get going far. • Improvements to in-game matchmaking- Guided games has had some success, but it needs a lot of work still. From implementation to incentives for teams to use it, this is something Bungie have been very quiet on and it is something I hope to have a chance to discuss this week. • An improved PvP experience- I feel Destiny PvP at its best (for me year one D1, particularly HoW and Crimson Doubles in D2) is like chess with many different ways to engage, attack, feign, and strategize with weapons, abilities, grenades, melee and supers. Over the course of the last two years of D1 and into D2, that experience has been whittled down to checkers where it became solely focused on first narrowed down metas in D1 (snipers, ability spam, etc) and then the reliance on the kinetic/energy combo in D2. I know a lot of people feel the answer is just lowering weapon TTKs, but to me that doesn’t change the fact that there’s still only one thing to master and that’s kinetic and energy. The game needs diverse skill sets and ways to play and I would LOVE to see the return of meaningful DoTs as well because that was another dimension to play that just doesn’t exist anymore.
• It is my belief that the streamers that attended the summit got played by Bungie. I hope I am wrong about this . Bungie is using them to hype their Sept. content. Bungie has lied through their teeth too many times. All this summit was about is relieving what is left of their player base of what money they can. Sept. would not be the first time Bungie has promised the moon and then delivered crap. Not one thin dime is coming out of my pocket till the reviews for Sept. content are out. Will it be the usual crap? It's not going to cost me a dime till I find out.

        • The fact of the matter is, that bungie chose a "cross section" of people who, on whatever level, have the ear of the community. They chose these people with the express reason to gather real instant feedback to the communities worries, concerns and thoughts on bettering the game. However, they also told us that the chosen people would be reporting back on the sumit at the beginning of the week, which they did, if you can even call it reporting in with what they learned, as Bungie once again screwed us "regular joes/janes" by making our "representatives" sign NDA's thus making the whole thing as pointless as an inflatable dart board for 99.999999999999999% of us. Did even one of the "lucky few" (sorry for the quotes but im a little touchy on this topic atm) say "hey, we were told we could report back on this, don't you guys think that EVERYBODY ELSE would like to be told a few things"? Doubt it. Everyone of the attendees that I have heard, read and watched talk about the "sumit" have said the same vague bulls**t over and over like it was uploaded into their mainframe and all the while telling us how blessed or privilaged they felt like they were on some bloody pilgrimage to some holy land and the gods have bestowed great fortune upon them, its a joke! So what i'm asking is why? Why can't we, the comunnity, know some of the finer points of what were discused? Why can't we know about the ideas that were shot down and the ones that were good? Why can't we see the video of the conference to get a better understanding of what REALLY went on? (it was definately recorded in some way.) It's easy for people to say one thing while knowing something else, my brother once gave me a glass of milk to drink when i was a kid, and being the trusting fool that I was back then I gladly poured it in to my mouth, have you ever had to chew milk? Not cheese or yogurt, sour, rancid milk, the whole experience put me off dairy for nearly 25 years. You say were are all as important as each other and that you respect our input, so show a little respect the other way and tell us what went on, it's not like we are asking for Nuke codes or power of attorney, just answers to questions that you have already given to your "chosen ones".

Wow, that was a really boring read. Just saying. You must have gotten a lot of cool bungie gifts for you to slurp them like that. You wrote when you went to the bathroom and what color shirt u wore and kept saying how happy you were. And in that entire novel, literally said nothing interesting. Thats pretty tough to do. Congrats

This whole episode illustrates whats wrong with this studio. Bungie, as it was, is gone. This disgusting wreck is nothing but corporate greed and unbridled stupidity wearing the skins of a dead legend.
I believed the first and foremost reason for the summit and most important goal would be to try to rebuild and repair the relationship between the community and developers,
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't there have to be some form of a relationship first before you or anyone for that matter can start thinking about "repairing" anything? Long story short given that I hate to say this. I trust the streamers opinion more then yours as of right now and from what they are saying there was Never any from of relationship in the first place. In fact, they have said Bungie has always looked at themselves as holier than thou when ever given any feedback. So 3+ years later they finally come out and say they might be wrong? You know, like the new DLC being "slightly better" then CoC. Not that CoC was anything to brag about knowing we already went through this in D1. T.D.B anyone? but here is the catch with the next DLC for D2. This isn't D1 where they had 5+ years of content already created to work with when H.O.W was released. There isn't that incentive that D1 had that kept 3+ million gamers around and that's because the game wasn't just giving cosmetics as rewards. This is D2 where Bungie scrapped 2+ years of work and started over with only 16 months to push out D2. Knowing the live team is the only ones working on this game right now that tells me the next DLC for D2 is (actually only going to be only slightly better) and that is not saying much at all. From what I understand gamers are going to have to ride this out and who knows when the improvements will actually take place. They say in the fall but that is what, just about a year down the line before the community might see any significant improvements? Bungie better hope they got something big before that or they wont have a player base.

                              • There's six months of feedback on this forum (good stuff not just childish toxic shit that you and others claim), YouTube, Reddit, and twitch. Why the need for the summit? All that summit was is to subtly get the hype going for September. Everyone is saying the same thing warmind is more of the but really excited for the fall expansion. I've heard enough of we're listening and monitoring feedback. Show us. September is the last chance they have to win their core audience back and they know it.

My experience with your experience... Bungie drags the player base through the mud with a lazy, halfassed sequel after YEARS of player feedback. When the jig is up and just about everyone has left, they call in a select few to fluff up, in the hopes that you will fluff up the player base right before the drop of the next DLC. A very SAD experience indeed.

I cant stand being surrounded by you morons, all bungie is anymore is a hype machine, they are more of a team of marketers than game devs. Genuinely sad to watch the downfall, dont believe any of the hype children, they are just trying to sell, its sell time. All bungie has done since destiny released is lie to sell unfinished games and expansions. Please theyd lie to their grandmothers if itd sell a copy of destiny. The jews have a word for it, its schysters, what a bunch of schysters, i wont believe a word neither should you.

I want to know what they said about those topics. What did you discuss? All you are actually saying is: I went there, I talked to people, it was fun.
