Stop calling Destiny an MMO

This game is NOT an MMO. It's a shared-world shooter, so stop giving Bungie excuses for taking away all the exotics we grinded for the past year. Edit: I bet half of the sheep replying saying that it is an MMO have never actually played an MMO.

  • I don't follow your leap of logic that because Destiny isn't technically an MMO that you should be able to continue ascending all your exotics, one thing has nothing to do with the other. Destiny isn't an MMO, in that it doesn't do the Massively part of it (max 12 people so far in any one instance of a zone whether that be crucible match or the tower or patrol compared to hundreds or more people in the same space in a traditional MMO) but it's hard not to compare it to one as it has many of the other elements like loot grinding, raids, and is a persistent online world with RPG elements. So surprise surprise, like many other MMO's it turns out it has something else in common, with some expansions old guns and gear is gonna get left behind. Get over it.

It's not a MMO by definition. But it DOES come as close as you possibly can to being an MMO without actually being one. However it still takes the VAST majority of its features from MMO games.

  • It is not an mmo and it is not an fps. But rather something in-between. The RPG elements is what makes it different than your standard fps games. Most of the "sheep" do not know what RPG elements are and complain because they want a standard fps game so they can do nothing but pvp all day long for no reason whatsoever. Imagine how great it could be if pvp wasn't a factor.

  • You are correct. It is not an mmo. But you are also wrong, and so is most of our community by getting concepts wrong. This game is a Fps with RPG focus. This means you can't look at it as a pure Fps. In a pure Fps game, you get your weapons and you use them until you get another game. It has no progression. In a RPG, you do have progression, it is its main focus. Either being gear progression or level or both. You start a RPG knowing you won't reach end game with the wooden sword you got at the beggining, hence why you Join groups in order to get BETTER weaponry and gear to tackle Harder content. Pretty much like Destiny. What changes is the way you play, instead of third person sword/magic combat, you fight with Guns in first person. Destiny is an RPG at its core with Fps component, not the other way around. And the same mentality you play a RPG (knowing you'll get BETTER equips later and you'll discard your current equips) should be the same which you play destiny. You don't see players on RPG forums crying about the wooden sword not being usefull at level 99. They welcome updates and are often anxious about New content and the gear it comes with. Just because it has Fps mechanics does not mean it is counter strike. If you are a Fps elitist, you have chosen the wrong game mate. Just my 2€.

Destiny is a RPG that is played in a FPS perspective. I bet you haven't played an mmo because they constantly change things with new dlc that leaves old gear behind. A prime example is DCUO

      • MMO = Massively Multiplayer Online. Destiny is massive, multiplayer and online so it can be considered one

        • Quotes from Wikipedia: [quote]Massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) blend the genres of role-playing video games and massively multiplayer online games, potentially in the form of web browser-based games, in which a very large number of players interact with one another within a world. As in all RPGs, the player assume the role of a character (often in a fantasy world or science-fiction world) and takes control over many of that character's actions. MMORPGs are distinguished from single-player or small multi-player online RPGs by the number of players able to interact together, and by the game's persistent world (usually hosted by the game's publisher), which continues to exist and evolve while the player is offline and away from the game. Actually saying it is an MMO gives cause for shared frustration. In an MMO there us enough content to make lost gear an afterthought. Here, MMO or nor, the content is so brief in terms of end game (unless you pvp) that the goal is to collect weapons and gear rather than collect gear for the next step. Also being a shared world shooter does not take away from its obvious rpg and mmo influences. That, and being a shared world shooter does not justify gear not going forward. If anything, the lack of end game content does. Even a few more strikes and a raid or two more per dlc would make a heck of a difference.

            • You don't need to be your typical MMO (ala. World of Warcraft, Everquest, Final Fantasy XI etc.) to incorporate MMO elements. Just like you don't need to be able to keep all of your old weapons and gear to still be considered a "shared-world shooter".

You're right it's not an MMo, but you should probably get over the whole gun carry over thing. It's annoying. You crybabies should just delete your toons, trade in the game, delete the app off your phone and move the -blam!- on.

            • Stop acting like it doesn't have elements similar to an MMO. And stop crying about exotics being left behind.
