I got my Thorn today after getting 500 points of void damage in the Crucible and killing Xyor. And I was slightly excited (I'm never hyped or over-hyped about anything), until I saw its low potential.
It's impact is low compared to other hand cannons, the stability is too low (Gunsliger's trance isn't enough to mitigate it), it has only 9 rounds which I'll get used to, and a slow reload (Chain of Woe completely mitigates it).
The cosmetics of this weapon, in my standards, are awful, it's an ugly gun, looks averagely unique in third person and horribly deformed in first person. The green detail in the weapon looks ugly and evil, not my style, and when reloading I always mistake the magazine with a peace sign, when it's not, but it's probably just me. Anyways this weapon looks evil and it was created by a corrupted guardian, you see how I look by searching my name and choosing my Lvl. 29 hunter, Thorn definitely does not fit me.
Sadly I haven't upgraded it yet, Final Round seems useless to me, but the Mark of the Devourer upgrade seems promising, again, sadly, in forums I see everyone typing that it's minimal damage, like my incendiary grenade that does 7 damage every second for 3 seconds.
Well, I still have no complete right to vote on this poll since I haven't fully (or at least till MotD) upgraded it, I want to see the opinions on "Thorn" from its many owners in Destiny.

One of the best handcannons and its damage over time is unique , very much doesn't suck
-
2 RepliesThorn is the only hand cannon that exceeds both is PvP and PvE Especially PvE.

I don't know what you are even talking about. First of all, never judge an exotic until all of its perks are unlocked. Without the stability buff, its stability and reload are comparable to all other hand cannons, but it has the bonus of above average range. You can then unlock either a huge range or a huge stability increase to tailor it to fit the encounter. It also handles faster and ADS faster than most hand cannons (a trait shared by all "low" impact Hand Cannons). Its DoT and piercing ability allows you to fire and forget on most red bar mobs in PvE and stop shield regen on annoying Majors, and is deadly in PvP. Simply put, Thorn is one of the best exotic primaries in the game and worth every excruciating second of the bounty.

It's great

5 RepliesI have gotten Hawkmoon and The Last Word, and neither of them can hold a candle to Thorn. Why? Because: 1. Mark of the Devourer is a lifesaver in certain situations due to it's DoT effect. 2. Stability upgrade fixes the recoil issue. 3. It's absolutely sinister! I mean, it shoots giant -blam!-ing thorns that turn your enemy green!

Edited by Deus: 3/9/2015 7:59:11 PM1. Max Out Thorn 2. Enter Crucible 3. Shooty, Shooty, Mark of Devourer, Perfect Balance 4. Profit

Never judge an exotic before you've used it with all of it perks unlocked. Never. Thorn is one of the best weapons in the game.
-
Max it out for yourself and then get back to me. Don't worry about the stat sheet. Just use it and see for yourself.

My thoughts on that weapon: +Burning damage is still applied notmally to Cabal's Phalanx foes if you hit their shield, +Burning damage is still normally applied even if the target is out of range (snipe Witches across CE bridge and keep their shield from regenerating until you collected sniper ammo for instance), +Very easy to take down players in PVP, +Decent firing speed, +Easy to notice when someone is using it because of it's unique ability/visual appearance -Seen as a very cheap way to earn kills/postmortem kills, -It's armor-piercing ability sounds good in theory but it's pretty hard to put to good use during gameplay (few ennemies travel in group, those who do are usually cannon fodders that could have been taken care of with anything else), -The active burning effect need to "expire" before a new one can be applied, any shot (stake) fired between the moment a burning effect started and ended are only dealy normal damage/shot (no point in firing the gun until it can apply a fresh burning effect). Being able to refresh/prolong the Thorn's active burning effect duration by tagging/shooting the target again (only in PvE, not in PvP) would make this weapon more useful in PvE Strikes/Raids and also give another reason to have more than one Thorn user in those fireteams (refresh other's burning effect, keeping a target marked for even longer. The damage tick could also be seen by everyone who helped prolong the same active burning effect to allow everyone to track their target).

Mark of the devourer and perfect balance makes it a 2 headshot kill and with its high RoF (along with perfect balance) it's super easy to get two quick shots in and wait for 1.5 seconds for the poison to kill.
-
Thorn is great once you have "mark of the devourer" 2 headshots (84 damage x2) 1 DOT (7 damage x6) = 2 headshots and run away, instant kill
-
Ask yourself the same question after you first unlock mark of the devourer...

Thorn and TLW are probably the best PvP weapons for xbox at the moment. They are quite far above the rest ever since the Vex Nerf and Suros also got hit. Red death still isn't up there with them. Thorn can get almost as much stability as TLW if you spec it right. Imo it's the better overall primary for PvP. But TLW will always be better if the user knows how to use it.

Dont like ot for pve so much anymore. I use my red hand or lash more for that. But its way op in pvp. Hate getting killed by it lol :/.

3 Replies"If you don't have, don't vote" says they guy who doesn't even have it upgraded yet. Word to the wise... All exotics suck until you upgrade them completely
-
Its good all around. Trust me, i have one for each character. Once upgraded, i can headshot all day. If you like hand cannons, odds are you will be very happy with it.
-
Only good in PvP, can't see myself using it it PvE
-
Get MotD. Then you'll see.
-
Only HC I'd use in PvE is Hawkmoon and I don't have it. I have Thorn but prefer to use TLW in PvP.
-
Have you never played crucible and been shot by a thorn? It's two headshot kill and 3 body.
-
6 RepliesThorn is basically the best crucible gun out there. It can 2 hit, and has a better RoF than hawkmoon, which is an unreliable 2 hit. Thorn is a waste of your exotic slot in PvE. Any other legendary handcannon can one hit the same enemies without waiting 10 seconds for it to happen, and the mag size/reload are very unimpressive relative to how easy it is to find a legendary handcannon with spray and play/outlaw and field scout.

3 RepliesDoes it work at preventing crota from gaining shield?

Edited by CarpentryHero: 3/9/2015 6:45:01 PMIt looks too evil for you? Where is the satire hashtag or are you old enough to play?
-
Had my Thorn(s) for an age now, but don't use them, regardless of how OP they are in the Crucible. Does anyone else think it feels flimsy to shoot? Like a little toy ray gun or something. Just puts me off, man.
-
If you think Thorn sucks i feel bad for any weapon trying to win you over. Doesnt get much better than Thorn
-
I don't think it sucks it a pretty solid hand cannon
