Hello,
I’m a long-time Destiny player and appreciate Bungie’s commitment to inclusivity. I want to raise a serious concern about the current rank-up process at the Ancient Tree in the Tower.
Right now, the Guardian bows in front of the tree, and the rank-up reward is tied to this bowing animation. For players who follow monotheistic beliefs, bowing is an act of worship reserved for God alone. Receiving a rank from a tree, even in a fictional context, can feel like a symbolic ritual that is religiously uncomfortable.
I strongly suggest removing the requirement to visit the tree for rank-up entirely, allowing rank progression to happen automatically during gameplay, or at least making the tree interaction optional.
As it is now, I cannot continue ranking up without performing this sequence, which blocks my progression. I respectfully request that Bungie address this issue as soon as possible so all players can enjoy the game without religious conflict.
Thank you for understanding.

1 ReplyYour character is a god-murdering zombie that got brought to life by an unspeaking sky-lightbulb to fight oversized bugs, rhino-turtles, and time-travel robots so that you can kill things mindlessly for an organization of light-zombie soldiers with unreasonable powers the lightbulb and evil pyramids gave you. (Zavala ordered you to give yourself to Darkness, and you followed for F-sake in the previous expansion if you finished the last mission.) This is a game, just a silly sci-fi game, if you can't separate that from real life then maybe reconsider your life or find a different game to play.

I ask that the animation be replace with planking

This is one of my all time favorites posts.

1 ReplyI always saw it as an act of reflection for the journey you took to rank up, and also an act of remembrance for those who lost their lives for the Last City, such as Cayde since his monument is right next to the tree. I don’t see it as religious at all.
-
Every time I rank up I internally say to myself "it's Tebow Time" and have a chuckle
-
1 ReplyNon-religious people don't have to follow our rules/customs/traditions.

Edited by Guardian, Archon Of Light: 8/12/2025 5:40:44 PMI believe in God IRL, and think you are being ridiculous We're not kneeling to a tree, we are kneeling to the Traveler/Gardner In a game where our charachters kill things because we're bored, you have a problem with kneeling to our God/Benifactor in the game ? If it bothers you, look away after you press the button lol
-
1 ReplyRight, you can kill in a fantasy game but you can’t bow because of your beliefs. I see NO hypocrisy there at all lol
-
So don't rank up. It's not necessary.

1 ReplyYou need therapy bud. Sounds like some form of OCD event your having. Being bothered by that is definitely religious OCD. Look it up. Also religious talk is not allowed in the form I believe. I don't make the rules my man.

2 RepliesEdited by Stalkholm: 8/11/2025 6:51:37 PMOn the one hand, you asked quite sincerely and respectfully, and I dig that. On the other hand, I don't think God is going to think ill of you because your digital video game character bowed to a digital tree. Bowing isn't just a spiritual thing, it's also a secular sign of respect. The only gods in Destiny 2 are the ones we carry around on our belts; I can almost promise you that there's no religious or spiritual symbolism in the bow. I understand your frustration, but, with respect, I think you're reading too much into it. Edit: Absurd as this may sound, consider talking to your religious leader about it, explain your concerns, see what they have to say. We know games, but your priest knows theology, they're the experts on the subject, maybe it's time for a second opinion?

I'm 100% certain God doesn't gaf if your video game character bows to a machine ball god in a video game. If he does well then whatever. A benevolent god doesn't demand worship or tell you what you can or cannot do. A wrathful god isn't worth worshipping. Bowing is also an act of showing respect to elders and superiors.
For players who follow monotheistic beliefs, bowing is an act of worship reserved for God alone.
Lmao no it isn't.
-
Your guardians god is the traveler and the light. When you rank up, you earn more connection to the light... so it is a religious service of your guardian NOT YOU.
-
If that is a troll post. Bravo If serious. lol

2 RepliesThis has to be a troll post, if not I don’t see how you draw a line at bowing in front of tree. But have no problem playing a guardian worshipping a giant ball in the sky in a game that has same gender relationships 🤣
-
1 Replyworried about offending God by bowing to a make believe tree made of pixels in a game, yet feels just fine slaying aliens by the 1000's. got it.
-
Well, not everyone has the same beliefs. Get over it, it’s just a game. Your god would do something about it if it were a real issue, no?
-
We've killed over a million different lifeforms in the game, not to mention the numerous times we've committed suicide. I don't think bowing in front of a tree is a big deal.
-
Don't people kneel before the Pope, who's merely a man?
-
Don’t mind me, just a friendly fisherman watching another fisherman do his thing.
