The Power Progression system is tedious and destroys fun

So you are playing, you are having fun, doing the thing and then you hit 950 and the numbers aren’t going up anymore. Yes, you can do stuff for pinnacle gear, but you are essentially just doing harder versions of things for the same gear you were getting already, just slightly, potentially better versions. This isn’t fun at that point. I am not against the more challenging things, but my play time isn’t about having fun at that point anymore. Without any form of forward momentum by just having fun in the game, it knocks out the fun in playing the game. Max power doesn’t mean anything beyond the damage input/output. That’s not specifically bad, but when it doesn’t mean anything and you don’t see little numbers growing, doing things start losing meaning. When the milestones don’t have value, doing them loses meaning. Why run strikes beyond getting rid of the marker on your screen? This is why grimoire score is good, you can do things and get a higher number.

  • What if you were told that 100...120...200...600...750....950 etc were all the exact same power level and bungie has convinced you it's fun to relevel but you never actually get more powerful or meaner ? If this game wasn't gated you could see it's 💯 true that when you hit the max it's the exact same max you already seen before . It's a plecebo and a farce

    • I totally agree! I've been saying this for years ever since Destiny 1 and people all but laughed in my face like I didn't know what I was talking about. The thing about Destiny 1 which is continuing to be lacking in Destiny 2 is the rewards, mind you, the rewards SUCKED in Destiny 1, unless you got certain weapons. I know, people are going to say, but back in D1 it caused exclusion problems. So what? We're still seeing that in lfg. Have that new laser or get kicked posts. So Bungie has solved no issues there. So, Bungie might as well bring back all the weapons. But, that raises another point, temporary content. In Destiny 1, it was the game you Loved to Hate! You Loved Destiny, but at the same you Hated Destiny, because today could be your day to get Gjallarhorn! Now that was just extra added incentive to play Destiny, that wasn't the full reason, okay yes it was, but you didn't know what was coming up next. What new secret would be uncovered? We just don't see nearly as much of that in Destiny 2. It's the thrill of the hunt! What's around the next corner? Bungie's lost that! And that my friends is what is needed in Destiny 2! Too many missed opportunities, just like with the puzzle. Destiny has gotten very very dry.

    • They don't need a power level. Just make activities that are easy, normal, hard. Easy you do more and take less damage Normal everything is equal Hard you do less and take more damage Power crap just adds artificial content to the game. It's a silly system and lacks any real depth.

        • I’d like to see less focus on the power level grind and more focus on interesting and unique perks and mods. Or how about gear sets with unique perks and talents. They showed a little of this in some raid sets and Revoker sets so it can be done.

            • Increasing an arbitrary number is not a leveling system. There's no stats involved. This game is not an RPG for this reason alone. Imagine skipping straight to paragon levels in Diablo. From lvl 20. You can do a bit, but the rest of your leveling is micromanaging tiny stats. Destiny doesn't even have that! You barely have the option to control numbers/perks that are on your gear. Sucks. You play what the game graces you with. A very stupid mechanic.

              • I think max power should be more of a grind. There should be planets, areas, missions etc that are at different power levels. The loot should reflect said power. That way as you are grinding power doing the same menial tasks, you have a constant purpose. One day you will be powerful enough to go to “x” planet and get “y” gun.

              • At 960, 95% of the game is redundant. Do one Garden Raid on a Saturday evening to get a handful of +1 stuff. Sure you can get a +1 doing the Master Hunt and Nightfall but that gets tedious week after week after week with the same old crap. Just the normal, plain, dull, stale job at sitting at the tower dismantling prime engrams and crap you've picked up thinking I really can't be bother doing the same old vender bounties and flash point that I was doing months back for absolutely nothing.

Edit: (in my opinion) Grinding for power is fundamentally stupid and not enjoyable part of the game. Just make stories and PvP maps and have us do the content. Power grind is a pointless goal post moving mechanic.

                • Once I plateau, or am grinding, I look up LFG on Xbox 1. It's how I was able to get my Legendary Sundial done as well as Pit of Hennessy. And, I also helped some others finish up their exotic quests for LB or Izzy's Burden. And then I find ways to, cliche here, "Bend the spoon with my mind", in different game modes and loadouts. Finish it with working on grinding for weapons. That's just me. The Good Guardian. 😎

                  • Agreed. It's why when I hit the soft cap for power level, I just look for cool sets to collect and find a decent build to play with and give up on the grind entirely.

                  • I was just thinking the same thing, lockin Pinnacle weapons behind the same activities each week kills all the other activities. There’s no point going for “powerful” gear after you hit 960, so any activity that gives it is just a waste of time....and doing the same 4 activities each week for pinnacle gear is getting boring.

                  • Honestly for me i think the power leveling is pointless. if you consider that there are only a few activities you can do for pinnacle gear. i don't get to raid often in fact been playing since beta , But i have only raided once. so that only leaves a few activities for pinnacle gear. Nightfall: The Ordeal (score 100,000 points or more) Pit of Heresy dungeon. Nightmare Hunts (Master difficulty) so that's it that's three pinnacle gear drops per week , at least for me. and if you get a dupe then your'e just screwed. I really think they ought to focus on gear stat drops than a higher level. If i was guaranteed a high stat drop for armor that would incentivize me more than a plus 2 power drop.

                    • On a minor level it gives something to chase. On a major level it does that at the expense of making some 500 items we have instantly degraded, reducing player choice. It also rewards game progression with making the game not more challenging but the opposite, that bit easier. I'd rather have the game difficulty scale and that includes in particular for solo players in missions. I'd rather see the end of blue engrams and another system of ranking. I'd rather have actual content to chase instead of this too.

                    • I never understood the evolution to forever chasing "power" that means nothing (the game played the exact same at PL 300 as it does at 970) vs chasing new cool gear. If they'd update the planet vendors with at least new ornament sets -if not per season, then yearly, I'd log on and grind for cool looks I liked. Same with weapons. This power garbage all goes back to the feedback the "influencers" gave going into Y2 and it's awful.

If they dont fix it or adjust something, or even go back to the way it was Im just going to stop playing the game. I have been loyal since Destiny 1 and with every single piece of DLC and season with D2 but Im done now. Im not the only one with this opinion either. You arent alone in thinking this. I hope they adjust it for the next season but its not even just the power pinnacle leveling that is a chore now, there is just something off. The fun isnt there anymore for me. I dunno.

                      • Also destroys iron banner as well with light level advantage. A person who plays this game more than you can completely destroy you because of higher light level in iron banner it’s honestly dumb. Same thing with how even earning light is tied to pinnacle light so good luck going up in light level it’s tedious.

Power level is something what should be removed from the game. Leveling is outdated. The game is good if you play cuz gameplay mechanics are fun. You dont need to stuck some meaningless numbers to have fun. Unless your brain was too badly reshaped by modern trends

                        • Understanding that light level doesn’t matter, which is absolutely true, strips away any meaningful progression and for me, a reason to play. We run the same activities usually for pinnacle gear to boost our LL...but if it doesn’t matter, what’s the point? The season pass gives you all the LL you need with 0 effort. Bungie has found a way to provide a meaningless carrot to chase, and when you get it, you realize it’s a mirage.

                        • Im a hardcore player and so does my clan mates. And none of us find it intersting or worth it to grind for the pinnacle rewards. It is not necessary to reach the pinnacle lvl trough your gear when the artifact does it with no efforts. Also...why reaching the pinnacle lvl ? Is it to melt strike bosses even faster ? As it is not already easy enough ? Light level do not matter at all unless you are -50 under the requiered lvl Its a borring worthless grind asking you to play in ways you dont enjoy just for...a little number ? Hell no. While some people are losing their minds grinding for such a useless thing, i was having fun in the activites that i lile even tough they give no pinnacle rewards.

                          • The power grind is absolutely pointless at this point. It's just more inflation of pointless grind. I'm really starting to wonder what the point is anymore. Milestones are worthless after week 1, and completely worthless if you reached pinnacle the previous season. 99% of drops get dismantled immediately anyway. So we're not getting more powerful, we've barely any new things to chase and the seasonal activities are boring after a run or two. I honestly think if it wasn't for the fact destiny is me and my friends Sunday night game, I doubt I'd be playing at all.
