BUNGIE: Why did you lead us on a wild goose chase with the Sleeper Simulant?

THANK YOU Bungie for acknowledging our search. Yesterday, those Guardians who had successfully foraged for crucial weapon fragments began the chase for the widely-anticipated Sleeper Simulant. The revelation of this new Quest was described as “awesome” by some. Others of you, who skipped meals and lost sleep on the hunt for the elusive Heavy Fusion Rifle, were not as pleased. The response to Sleeper Simulant was humbling because we did not predict the community reaction. When we try new things, players often teach us a lesson about how to do it better, and this one has us thinking hard about how Quests communicate their availability. Our challenge is balancing between the secrecy that makes these hunts exciting, and transparency that could spoil the fun for the hunters. As long as the community is giving us feedback, we’ll keep seeking the ideal balance. I still argue that 'time-gated content' is not the same thing as 'secrecy'. ----- Please, we just want answers. Here is the problem. 1. At TTK launch this gun was hyped as the 'Gjallarhorn 2.0'. It was a big deal. The first articles about this gun specifically said that there was a mystery quest to unlock it, and we would have to FIND IT by collecting relics and 'unlocking the gunsmiths memories'. 2. Bungie went along with this for 3+ weeks. They remained mostly silent, but they kept dropping hints like 'we can show you the door' and 'the truth is out there'. They led us on the whooole way. THEY MADE IT SEEM AS THOUGH IT WAS ALREADY AVAILABLE. 3. We over at /r/searchforthesleeper spent a LOT of time and effort during those 3 weeks trying to find this gun and unlock it for the rest of the community. We thought we were getting close when this happened... 4. Bungie releases the mission as time-gated material with NO mystery of how to unlock it. It simply shows up. That's it. The search is over. Our entire community was invalidated overnight. All of our time and effort was WASTED. See why we are upset? A whole community of gamers spent weeks searching for this thing. We thought we were doing the community a service by finding this gun that EVERYONE wanted. You tweeted about it, articles were published about it, the hype was real! "We can only show you the door...", "The truth is out there"? ALL of us had fully expected to be able to FIND this thing in-game, and then today you come out and release it as time-gated content? WHY would you do this? I can understand that you want to prolong the game and release content over time, that makes sense! But why would you purposely keep us looking for an item that WE CAN'T GET? Some of us put a lot of effort into finding this thing, only to find out that it was all wasted effort. This has left some of us feeling really sour about the future of the game, especially if all of the upcoming content (and the remaining exotics) are going to be time-gated rather than actually hidden for us to find. There is no mystery in waking up to a free mission, there is no challenge in being given the answers. Why did you take this great potential and throw it all away? Please, we just want an answer as to why it had to turn out like this. Why didn't you just tell us we were wasting our time, like you did with the Basketball Court guys? Why?! EDIT: Everyone keeps saying we chose to do this without them making us. THAT IS TRUE, but it was heavily implied THE ENTIRE TIME that this gun would be available through in-game events such as hidden secrets in daily heroics. Multiple tweets, articles, and even the Weekly Update pointed to this being the case. I wouldn't have had any problem with the way this turned out if they hadn't done that and led us on EDIT2: Thanks to everyone for the bumps and trying to bring some attention to this issue. THE SLEEPER HAS BEEN "FOUND". Not really found, more given to us, but the search is at last over. We had a lot of fun looking for it, learning the lore, and now finally getting the gun. We're a bit disappointed that there really was no need for a search, and the lore surrounding this gun was not brought into the quest at all, and the quest was quite frankly garbage, but that's behind us now. After all of this I doubt we'll get a response from Bungie, or if they do say something it will just be along the lines of "We don't want to spoil in game secrets", but I still believe that creating hype to find an item that literally cannot be found is a betrayal of the trust of the community, and I hope this doesn't go unanswered.

  • I would have been more disappointed if they had told you. Any company worth their isn't going to stop your hype train and free marketing of an aspect of their game. Now I will say I think what you guys did was really cool and I hope this doesn't discourage you efforts in the future. You guys did a great job

  • This reminds me of the time I pranked my friend with McDonald's Monopoly. I carefully cut out and glued an Instant Win Disneyland Trip to the back of the peel-off ticket and when we went to McDonalds I removed a ticket from my cup and pressed the fake ticket back onto my cup while he was visiting the toilet. "Paul" I said as I pulled off my new ticket "uh ... is this real?" and handed the fake ticket to him. He examined it and his eyes began to grow in surprise and joy. "We're going to Disneyland!" He yelled way too loudly, obvious elation washing over his demeanour. He begins to get more and more invested in the fake prize, letting out random hoots of excitement, texting people and making plans about the things we'll get up to and the fun we'll have. Now pause. Regardless of who's fault it was, mine for making the ticket, or Paul's for over reacting to the situation, the bottom line is I knew the truth and I could have stopped him at any second and saved him from the disappointment. Every second that passes where I don't let him know the simple truth and let him down gently, the extent of his disappoint grows along with my portion of the blame for his over reaction. I had the power to prevent his disappointment. Now un-pause After watching the poor guy's elation grow for a few more minutes I break the news to him. He doesn't talk to me for an hour and I get to revel in my status as master prankster. I'm so evil with pranks (I once faked the rapture to freak out one of my fundamentalist Christian friends but that's a story for another time). The thing is, it doesn't matter who's fault it was that people got so invested in hunting for the SS, but just like me watching Paul get Disneyland hype, Bungie knew the next-level community driven treasure hunt that was gaining momentum would be a fruitless endeavour that would end with a disappointing fizzle when they activated the mission. The guilt lies primarily in the silence of the party with the inside knowledge to prevent the painful disappointment; the main difference is that I was intentionally generating hype to prank my friend so I could derive joy from his disappointment, Bungie did accidentally. tl;dr you're not going to Disneyland.

  • Bump. Bungie seems to have the sad idea that deceiving the player base into playing more will somehow help the game. Very disturbing.

  • just think of all the times people complained about how gally kept them from raiding because they didn't have it so bungie makes sleeper simulant which somehow was given the title of the new gally. and now everyone is mad because they thought they were going to get a new crutch. Maybe bungie did this just to troll us after all the crap people spam them over weapons. Either way the gun was giving me 15000 point critical on level 41 yellow bar enemies so im happy with it

  • It would have been really cool if the quest line was like the Phantom quest in Battlefield 4, that had multiple parts spread out over DLC's, with very vague clues that the community actually had to search for, and when they found clues or hints they had to decipher the meaning to advance, till you could get the next hints for the Password and go online to enter it. Was a really great time and the community really pulled together and went all out to piece the clues and hints together. Wish there were epic quests like that in Destiny. logging in and just having an exotic quest handed to you is really lame.

But again, no one ONE MADE YOU DO IT.... betrayal? they aren't loyal to you, its the other way around, you are loyal to them... there is a difference. being sour/salty about it. I understand about all your wasted time and effort (that no one told or made you spend) but come on man... its a game you spent how much time on? this coming from a semi no lifer on this game. xD

I totally agree with everything you said. Even though I wasn't one of the guardians searching tirelessly for the weapon, I have been a lurker on the sleeper reddit. I can tell how much effort those people put into finding the gun. I'd be pissed if all that time was wasted.

How do you know the quest wasn't bugged? Maybe it was supposed to start when we gathered the 4 relics, and since it was bugged it didn't. Ever wondered why there was a lack of dialogue? Clearly something didn't go as planned. No one was lied to. No one told you to spend three weeks searching. This would have been rewarding if within minutes this "community" didn't blast everything all over the internet. 99% of the people with SS didn't figure out a single thing on their own. Stop feeling entitled to any sort of answer from Bungie. If this makes you question the future of the game, then good riddance. I for one am glad we didn't get everything handed out on day one, gives up things to look forward too. Plus, you haven't even beat the raid yet. Because of that fact alone, you don't deserve answers. Just another person on the forum who feels like Bungie owes them something, when they don't.

          • It makes me very sad. And you are 100% correct. Bungie should take a list of all the guys from your site, and give you a special skinned simulant (call it a sleeper stimulant just to eff with people) That's my opinion AnywAy

I'm not surprised by Bungie's move whatsoever. I knew it was going to be something so simple, I had a gut feeling about it. I never go out on a whim anymore. I just play the game. If someone finds out something and shares it, cool; if not, cool. They did the same thing in Y1 in Destiny. All that hype and it ends up being a disappointment. This was no different or the exception. Nothing has changed (the way bungie does things in Destiny). They all were silent while we went on just "chances". Bungie isn't the same bungie like they were in halo. They're much more different now that they're partnered with Activision. You KNOW this. Come on man! I won't disregard the Destiny Youtubers and Reddit guardians who have legions of people that help them figure it out and piece it all together and find out secrets that majority haven't known. That's great. But when proven wrong some people start insulting those people and then it leads to nowhere. I'm just saying focus on Bungie's present and recent actions in Destiny and ask yourself if you want to put in the time to figure something out (and how before Destiny came out the marketing team were hyping the game up) when they're going to end up disappointing you and wasting the entire community's time.

          • While I do love hidden secrets in games, and just questing around trying to figure things out. I don't think Bungie lied in this circumstance. In the original Game Informer interview it was stated that the golden rage relics unlock the gun smith's memory and he sends you on a wild odyssey. It was widely accepted, that after turning in the DVALIN relics there might not be any secret to unlocking the rest of the quest, it may have simply been tied to Gunsmith rep, in which case the search would have been pointless anyway. I agree that a time gate is pretty weak, but there was never any official word that entering the Konami code into the Exo gunsmith will restore his memory or anything like that. Where I do agree, is that the questline itself feels largely unfinished. When you turn in the last DVALIN relic now, the gunsmith will comment on the music coming from it and the First Firewall will immediately appear. However, after that, there is absolutely no exposition. What is the signal Rasputin is still sending through those ancient relics? Why are there a bunch of Hive and Taken Knights running around in the Omnigul room? After the Fallen S.A.B.E.R. strike, Zavala seems pretty determined to make sure another breach doesn't happen, you know, after the Taken and the Hive already broke it on separate occasions. And yet, here are the Hive and Taken once again in the bunker. I don't really see what they have to do with a signal coming from a relic made during the collapse. After that missions ends with zero dialogue and fanfare, you are given a transcoder to enter a bunch of binary into. After that, the transcoder starts broadcasting leading you to the locations of the IKELOS core in the Devils spire. Why is the core there? Was someone trying to ferry it off Earth in the colony ship during the collapse? Why is the darkness closing in on that location, hence the time limit? I though we dealt with that in the Taken War:Earth questline? Why is the core even important? It just felt like the quest was slapdash put together and rushed out the door, with zero voice acting. For a weapon that was heavily featured during those early interviews that is massively disappointing. I just hope Bungie didn't fling it out in an incomplete state just to appease all those looking for the weapon.

technically the only "person" to blame is the community, bungie never said that the simulant was gjallarhorn v2 the game informer article did. the community were the ones who overhyped this thing.
