It’s quite easy, actually. It became clear somewhere around House Of Wolves that the main thrust behind development was this idea of “how you SHOULD play OUR game.”
Can’t argue with this. And I can’t begin to tell you how much I hate it. What’s the point of giving us a giant sandbox to play in if there is only one right way ( Bungie’s way ) to play the game? They give us the illusion of having choices but at the end of the day, we don’t.

 • That's just it. THEY don't see it as a sandbox. ...and I personally don't like sandbox games. But a healthy loot-based RPG has to allow for a wide-range of build types. A wide-variety of play styles...and a steady progression of power on part of the player. ...and in the pursuit of "competitive balance" in PVP, Destiny 2 missed the mark on these thigns. Badly.

 • The reason why I picked the word ‘Sandbox’ was because I was thinking of GTA Online while I was typing my post ( and I could not think of a more suitable word ). GTA5 ( and GTA Online ) came out on the PS4 and XBox One all the way back in 2014, and this game has consistently remained in the top 10 of the gaming charts ever since then ( at least in the UK and Ireland ). The playerbase is massive and no one seems to getting tired of playing it. I don’t play GTA myself ( not my type of game ) but I am in awe of its success, and I think the fact that Rockstar gives its players almost infinite freedom to go anywhere and do whatever they want seems to be a large part of the game’s continued success. Logging into Destiny 2 and doing the weekly milestones has quickly gotten old. There are plenty of other things I could be doing in Destiny 2 but since Bungie doesn’t incentivize me to do them, why should I even bother.

 •
Rockstar gives its players almost infinite freedom to go anywhere and do whatever they want seems to be a large part of the game’s continued success.
GTA V is a completely different kind of game, and that is a type of game play that Bungie isn't interested in supporting. Remember Bungie came to this as primarily a developer of SHOOTER games, not someone who makes open-world sandbox games. Bungie won't even make a hoard mode for this game, because they (reportedly) dislike "unstructured" activities in their games that much.
Logging into Destiny 2 and doing the weekly milestones has quickly gotten old. There are plenty of other things I could be doing in Destiny 2 but since Bungie doesn’t incentivize me to do them, why should I even bother.
Which is the real problem. Bungie -blam!-ed up this game, because they lost sight of (or simply didn't respect) who it was that was actually playing the game, and what it was those people wanted and expected out of playing the game. IMO, they got so focused (and greedy) for potential e-sport revenue, they that tried to "re-brand" the game as a conventional/competitive shooter so that they could go all-in on making PVP "Balanced and competitive'...and e-sport ready. Problem though.... 1. The vast majority of the game's players are PVE players...and the vast majority of those are RPG gamers...not shooter gamers. 2. RPG games expects loot that has an impact on game play...and an end-game power-progression but in trying to turn Destiny 2 into an e-sport..Bungie DESTROYED these thigns. Leaving behind what is only an end-game grind for cosmetics. 3. While that cosmetic grind may satisfy SHOOTER gamers, RPG gamers won't bother to get out of BED for that kind of end-game. So the solution isn't trying to turn Destiny 2 into this big, unstructured sandbox game. That isn't what this game (or this brand) is, any more than being a competitive shooter was. What they need to do is REPLACE the RPG elements that were stripped out of game, and RETURN the game to the loot-based RPG that Destiny 1 was for the last two years of its life. THAT is the "Destiny brand"...and the destruction of that BRAND is what the fanbase is so angry about. ...and not understand (or respecting) that the brand had already been created and firmly established in people's minds was the root cause of this -blam!- up on Bungie's part.
