Do Esports count as real sports?
So Esports. They are probably the most controversial thing to happen in the gaming community in like a decade. I personally can't stand them but I don't mind having competitive gaming. Basically what I'm trying to say is I don't think there should be large cash pool at the end of a match but instead gamers should be satisfied with the victory and recognition like they used to have instead of trying to be all super MLG competitive players. And what further makes me annoyed with Esports is that I see people saying they are 'athletes' for playing a video game. And if someone tries to counter the argument and say that chess is a sport so why can't games be I barely agree with the idea of that but at least chess has the same rules and layout for a century or more instead of games which have only been present for like 5 years.

2 RepliesSport constitutes something physical. Playing video games does not require physical exertion, so it's not a sport. Same goes for chess, poker, anything you can do sitting down.

1 ReplyNo. It's a competition on the same level as say chess, but it's certainly not a sport, as it lacks the athleticism necessary to be a sport. Also, before you say that the IOC recognises chess as a sport: 1. This is the same IOC who is trying to remove wrestling, one of the original Olympic sports, from the Olympics; 2. Most chess players don't call themselves athletes or what they do 'sport'.

Things like chess and gaming should not be considered sports, they should be considered "Gaming Competitions" or whatever. Playing Magic or Pokemon is not a sport so neither should these things be considered them. To me the term "sport" should only be used on something that's physical like football or requires physical condition like racing because of the speeds.

Well, looks like the authority on the subject has spoken. But why stop there? I think that real sports shouldn't be played for money. After all, it ruins the player's enjoyment and causes people to get upset when their favorite team loses. Also, I think that games should no longer be scored. After all, losing might hurt someone's ego. We can't have that. Lastly, I think we should only have a games where everyone is working together. Competition is a vestigial remnant of tribalism, which is the root cause of many modern ills.
