Doing it Yourself /rant

I was typing this out in another thread and decided to make my own thread. I don't know why I ranted on this but here it is. Concerning people who think they need an external push to get things done. Whether it be completing school, getting in shape, or other achievements. I'll use my experiences with lifting as an example. I take the time to learn about my body. I work for my own personal goals and to build a physique I want. I understand that it's a constant life journey and I love it. I used to try and go out of my way to help people but got tired of raging about how lazy some people can be. I only give help when people ask for it now and if they can't keep themselves motivated, I don't care. I was never helped out, had a steady training partner, or pushed by anyone. I helped myself out, trained by myself, and pushed myself. I know how much I benefit from my lifestyle and enjoy the satisfaction I get from smashing an old PR and seeing the changes in my body through my monthly progress pictures. If you don't have the willpower to do anything, you will not get far. I will not waste my time to go out of my way and help another person who wants to better themselves but need a push from an external force. You gotta do it yourself. /rant

  • It's not that people don't have willpower, it's that most don't know they have it. THAT'S where the help would come in. Some people live their entire life being pushed so far down, they have no idea what up is. I will spend the rest of my life helping anyone in any way that I can. If that warrants a push from me, I'll take time to push or hold a hand for a second. So long as it's not sabotaging myself in any way, why not?

  • I kind of agree. But I mean, If I didn't have a wife and a child to work hard for, I wouldn't work as hard. I generally do need someone else or something to work for, in order for me to do it.

  • I'm a very motivated person, but I think I learned that from my parents at a young age. I think how a child is raised affects that sort of thing quite a bit. By the time I was 10 my dad had taught me that if you do something that you know you'll be expected to do before being asked to do it, you will get more praise and be ahead of the crowd. Applying this in the workplace might make you end up doing more work than anyone else, but it sure as heck makes you look good.

I'm with you in the fact that I am definitely very capable of getting things done. When I clock in at work, I dive right into something and keep at it for the entire day, I only break for lunch because it's mandatory. I've only taken small breaks maybe twice during the year I've been working at this place. That aside, like any workplace, my coworkers have days where they just don't do anything (or at least that's how it appears to me). I could get upset and say "If they're not going to work, neither am I", but in reality, the job needs to either get done, or partially done so it can be finished the next day. So I just do it to stay busy, and they can't necessarily yell at me for not finishing, because they know it was due to their lack of help that it didn't get done. I understand that sometimes people just have bad days, and I don't mind hauling extra work to give them a break, because I know they'll return the favor. Frankly, they do every day considering I have extra duties on top of my original job. We all have busy lives, but I find a lot of value in helping people. Even if it doesn't effect me directly, I leave hoping they'll do the same for someone else someday. If nothing else, I leave knowing I did a good thing, which is better than any favor they could offer. In a world as connected as this, you can hardly afford to have a "yourself" attitude anymore. Though it's hard to see, sometimes other people's problems eventually become ours.

      • Hehehe...Well I'm -blam!-ed. I haven't got much motivation for anything. I force myself to get things done when I don't want do anything, constantly for years and I never enjoy or find satisfaction in any of it. The only reason I do it is because I know it will be better in the long run and I'll become a guilt ridden miserable recluse otherwise.
