Should Apple produce a gaming console to compete with Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo? Come up with a creative name if you can!

  • No they shouldn't. They made one back in the 80s and it was a complete bust.

    • Sure. It'll cost like 1k for a system that looks very nice but can barely run N64 graphics. But sure they can if they want.

        • Apple could paint a brick white, slap on an Apple logo and they'd still out sell the PS4 and Xbone because they have so many sheep that'll buy whatever they make.

        • Remember the wrath that was unleashed on MS for making the X1 always online and trying to kill physical media? Now imagine an always online Apple console which only supported game downloads from their App Store, where all pricing and content is controlled by Apple. Got that in your head? Good, so now you can imagine the base configuration of the console selling for a $100 to $200 premium over the Xbox One. And, unlike the PS4, you cannot swap hard drives for more storage. Instead, you can pay another $200 to upgrade that 500GB drive to a 1TB drive. The iGame. Imagine.

I wasn't that aware of the 'console wars' when the Xbox launched, so the concept of a new company entering the space, and performing well enough to be considered one of the big players in the home console industry, is alien to me. It didn't work for the Ouya, it didn't work for the nVidia Shield, and it likely won't work for whomever next attempts it. Even if that's Valve.

                • They would bring out a new console every year and forget about the first gen by gen three. Screw that crap.

                • Apple made a console already. It was a little while ago and it wasn't very popular.

                • I voted "No". But then again, if anyone wants a console that costs $1400, has more DRM than Microsoft and Sony ever dreamed of, repackages the previous generation's tech (but then says that it's 'innovating'), and tried to sue all of the other console makers for patent infringement (doing nothing but embarrassing themselves)... well then sure, bring it on and welcome to the industry. lmao

                • No. They make reliable tech, but that's about it. I don't think they'd even know what they're supposed to do if they did enter the industry.

                  • 1st year: The Apple box. 2nd year: It's the same system, but smaller. 3rd year: It's the same system, but has some new features. 4th year: It's the same system, but smaller. 5th year-up repeat.

                  • So you'd want them to release the same console every year with a marginally different name and call it "new"? It'd also have more DRM than the original XB1 policies and would cost about £1500. They did have a console, which lasted for a year.

                  • They already have one. It's called the iPhone/iPod Touch. Mobile Gaming is popular and profitable.

Assuming the console will even be good enough to compete (as your question indicates), then more competition is good for consumers... However no one here seems to realize that. Look at youtube. No competition. It's now a monopoly.

                    • Apple doesn't need a game console, they have mobile gaming which is way more profitable. And Apple would never stray from profitable!
