The Watchmen Solution

For anyone that has read the Watchmen comics (screw the movies), you know that world peace occurs because one hero decides to initiate the genocide of millions in NYC, which causes the world to come together. From then on the world lives in peace, united against a common cause. And strangely enough... I found myself agreeing. What if the only true way to bring about peace IS some weird, as-yet-unknown form of genocide like the one in Watchmen? Note: I do not mean genocide in the same manner as the genocide committed by Hitler or the acts of the Christians during the Crusades.

  •
For anyone that has read the Watchmen comics (screw the movies)
I actually really enjoyed the movie and thought the method of destruction at the end (Dr. Manhattan type bomb) was a much better choice than an alien attack by a tentacle monster.

  • Ozy's plan has a few holes in it. It held off war momentarily and led the earth to temporary peace. But what happens when the world discovers it was all bullshit and that all those millions died for nothing? I doubt it will stay a secret forever. His plan was to make that monster he created appear to be an alien invasion correct? Well then where the -blam!- are the rest of the aliens?

  • You can't have heroes without villains - why can't (something like) stupidity be the villain?

I think a big point in the book is that no plan is foolproof though. Adrian thought he had created peace on earth and that he did the right thing. The problem is that Rorshach's journal got into the hands of the press and has the potential of being exposed to the world since Rorshach found out about Adrian's plan and wrote everything in the journal. With that being said there could have been a few different outcomes. This info could have gotten out and everything could plunge even deeper into chaos with all those deaths being for nothing. Or they could publish the piece and nobody would believe them, making sure peace is ensured. Or the piece could not be published at all. What I thought was funny was that in the end of it all the final decision that could drastically change the world lays in the hands of a small time journalist. He has the choice of publishing the piece and possibly destroying the illusion of a common enemy Adrian has created or not publish the piece and ensure that everyone thinks they were attacked by aliens ensuring at least for the time being that the US and Russia works together. The thing I love about Watchmen is that there are a number of possible outcomes and interpretations. Alan Moore really wrote a fantastic story with Watchmen. EDIT: I think this person (in the video I am putting in the post) makes a fantastic analysis of the Watchmen movie and to a degree the graphic novel. It is quite long spanning six videos but I recommend watching them all since it adds a lot of insight to the overall themes of the movie at least his interpretation which I find very interesting. SPOILERS of course.

    • The thing is, a common enemy is the only thing that will unite us as a whole race. And i disagree with that statement, the movie of it was pretty good, you can't insult that and say it's garbage because it differs from the comics, it was still a masterful movie. I don't endorse us ourselves initiating this 'genocide' that would purge a large part of the population, though i suspect eventually we will do it to ourselves, but so is the path of imperfection.

      •
one hero
Ozymandias wasn't really a hero. Besides, his entire plan was based around teleporting a squid-thing into the city and having it die there so everybody else is too busy wondering what the -blam!- happened to be able to kill one another. Least, that's what I recall of it. Still pretty insane.

      • If we had to blow NYC from the face of the earth, I'd be more than willing. Hell yeah, remove those idiots. Sorry, rant. Anyhow, if world-peace happens, lots will occur.
