Everything Wrong with BioShock Infinite

Yes, Infinite is hosting this week's episode of Everything Wrong. wat im not even sure when I shouldn't need to say SPOILERS, but I just did, so -blam!- you. Floodian fans will know I adore the game, but I know it still has flaws, and I agree with almost everything this guy says. inb4Palien

  • BioShock Infinite's gameplay is a step down from the first one IMO (haven't played BioShock 2, though).

  • Good video. Bioshock is an easy 9/10 but anyone that denies that there are definite problems is just deluding themselves. It's fun as hell, has an incredible story, but the gameplay is just not refined. Criticism of a video game is not a personal attack on yourself (looking at you, Pulse Cloud).

    • What's up with British commentators hating this game? Just to go against the grain. So there aren't morality choices... it's not that kind of game. Lack of citizens? First, it isn't an open world game. It's linear. And taking this into account, there are STILL houses on side-paths you can go into that have citizens doing stuff and people on the street doing stuff. He's complaining citizens disappear when you're in a place taken over by the military-police, or at the docks where, again, a bunch of military-police are taking over? That's just grasping at straws. Infinite DID have the parts where you could hide your weapon and not fight people. Just because he didn't make such choices doesn't mean they aren't there. Awesome for a game that isn't meant to be an RPG, really. Let's see... vigors. Of course the only times you see them will be against enemies. All the vigors being used against you are from enemies! Why would somebody use a non-dangerous vigor at you? It just doesn't make sense. And he complains about vigors not being present in the universe itself when the entire beginning of the game has TONS of things throughout the citizens relating to vigors. Did he just ignore that? He doesn't address the story though that's the most valid complaint of them all. 'Lazy' is a lazy thing to say. If you want to complain about the story then do so. His complaint about depth in gameplay, and with the Handymen, is definitely valid. His complaint about lack of character depth is ridiculous. Fink is just doing it 'because?' No. He's all about money and there are scenes about him abusing workers and paying them in company dollars and stuff. That is interesting. And I assume we're ignoring audio logs, since he said 'none of the main characters have depth' then went right into talking about how all the audio logs, voxophones, are about giving depth to those characters. He MOCKS the guitar part with the song which is HUGELY relevant and interesting, which is just idiotic of him. He says 'oh there should be a hard mode' then later talks about 1999 mode and says how much it sucks and calls it 'needlessly hard.' Him talking about the ''ghost'' shows he just didn't understand the story whatsoever. There is a very valid reason for her being like that, and if you are going to accept the fact that there are 'world tears' then refusing to accept the ''ghost'' is just grasping at straws to hate on the game. He's right that the world tears aren't interesting to look through. Tis unfortunate. He complains that having Elizabeth doesn't feel like an escort quest because she isn't directly targeted. WAT. I agree that there is a lack of interesting tears during battles. So yeah. Some valid issues. And Bioshock is no 10/10. But the vast majority of these complaints are just simply unfair.

        Also also,
Lady Comstock, taking damage from bullets. Really? But I guess if she were undead like those Finkton guards, she'd still have a physical presence in Elizabeth's prime reality.
• Here's what I said to the friend who posted this on facebook:
I agree for the most part: Infinite is far more ambitious and spectacular on its narrative and artistic merit than its mechanical side. Sure, the Skylines are some of the best combat pieces in the series, but everything else is slightly flat. The whole deal with
many of Fink's inventions and designs coming from Rapture as visible through tears is both ingenious but also a tad on the lazy side.

Oh, one thing I remember disagreeing with the guy about; I think Elizabeth providing resources during combat is a stroke of genius - if an AI can't fight, then what better thing for them to do than provide for the fight?
My final point, not yet posted to the book of Face, is the mundane nature of the tears in gameplay. But he was forgetting
constants and variables. Each piece of Columbia pulled into Booker and Elizabeth's realities is only subtly different from the city they inhabit at that point. Besides, only once the siphon is destroyed is Elizabeth able to go balls-deep and further into the more outlandish (for them) realities of Rapture and the Sea of Doors.
• Yeah, I am finding myself agreeing with him in all areas pretty much. There is a lot of missed opportunities and untapped potential. And the game did leave me with lots of questions like the first one did. But after the first one, I instantly replayed the game 30 times over, while this one has me looking on forums and watching videos.

This type of videos is pathetic. "Bioshock Infinite is a game that has problems." Stopped watching right there.

          • I still need to pick this game up. And then put it back down. But not before playing it.
