Player retention

I have observed an incredibly sharp drop off in players over the last two weeks. This seems of note, because it’s something that historically Destiny has struggled with. I won’t pretend for a second the launch of Witch Queen wasn’t a huge success, it absolutely was. But what shocked me as an individual, was how little there was to do after the initial excitement wore off. The only thing that really lasted beyond the first week or two was weapon crafting, and that… just really didn’t motivate me. Our clan has a sizeable server, and there’s only a handful of people who are still playing Destiny. Everyone else is citing burn out, lack of things to do, and boredom as reasons why they don’t want to play. I’m just curious if… this is what Bungie wants? And, should we expect to see more of this flash in the pan content. Something that comes along, burns bright for a moment and falls away quickly. People liked to say that Witch Queen was the best expansion since The Taken King, and I find that comparison detestable. Not only do I think it’s not true, I think it’s incredibly unflattering for the Witch Queen expansion. The Taken King kept me in Destiny for 5 years. Witch Queen barely kept me around for 2 weeks. The campaign was fantastic, please don’t misunderstand my point there, it was well written and well made. But this expansion had no longevity, no staying power, and sits on top of a pile of equivalent expansions that weren’t tying to do anything new. Oh, and weapon crafting needs to be completely reworked before it’s worth getting excited over. Whoever decided all an enhanced perk needs was +4 handling needs to be removed from their team, as they are cynically out of touch.

  • That's how games like this often goes Right now the more casuals left while the more invested are working on seals and other completion There will be a spike with guardian game and the next season Cycle of live service games

  • Seems like the same thing in many clans- 50+ names on a roster but maybe 10 really active for all the same reasons you mention (burnout etc). The game is definitely better with teammates, but 90% of what people seem to do (myself guilty of it as well) is LFG PVE content so I can get it done on my own schedule. Probably the same for a ton of people. Clans don't seem rewarding in the way intended- just seems to be the place where you dont have to deal with LFG raid toxicity . PVP is in a rough patch and is hard to find a team for if you're the average player without a flawless or unbroken title- like if you dont have one of those titles, no one gives you the time of day to run matches as a team (not criticism, but running a stack obviously protects all those KDs and titles for most normal humans who dont have the reaction time of a jackrabbit on caffeine). So, IDK but I'd agree retention of players and content that makes people stick together seems to be in a rough spot. Admittedly I'm at the point of just playing out of habit/hope it'll get better. Tons of friends that went "poof" and a lot of people that seem to not care about teaming up anymore outside of raid runs. WQ was cool, but agree 100% it slows don after the campaign big time. 🤷‍♂️

They can't keep players because they are more focused on political views and making sure people feelings don't get hurt than actually making an enjoyable game.

      • The campaign was not that good. The player base is just used to mediocrity, so they confuse acceptable with holy grail. Second, this is THE Destiny experience. Always been this way. I don't understand why people are acting surprised.

        • Player populations follow negative binomial distribution; you have a few players who a play a lot (everyone here, basically) and a huge long tail of people who play a little. The tail players will typically play in the beginning of the release, then quickly stop. So, it is only natural, statistically speaking.

        • I think folks go too hard when content launches. What is probably geared for 4-6 weeks is ran through in 2 leaving ppl burned out with little else to do. I took over a week to complete the campaign. Taking it slow, enjoying the new environments, letting the cut scenes play out. Some folks had it nailed in 2 days. No matter what they set down, players will scoff it down asap then feel empty, and the only way to stop that is time gating. And that's the last thing we want.

Truth be told I'm okay with Destiny having drop offs of content at this point. It really does let me breathe and play some other games for the free time that I make for gaming. The seasonal story was fantastic, but concluded sooner. I got the rolls I wanted for the most part, but I am going to now focus on farming the wellspring bow and iron out some seasonal challenges. I find myself taking a break from Destiny feeling pretty satisified and content with what I spent. When I do hop on, I don't feel rushed or urged to get enhanced traits. I just kinda do what I feel like accomplishing for the week. Also - the taken kings longevity came from armsday weeks and a pretty awful leveling system. The stuff taken king did wouldn't hold water for the current playerbase. Taken king did a lot of timegating that frustrated the playerbase at the time.

            • I'm sure Bungie are not the least worried. They must be happy with that things are going. Drop off in PVP / Crucible and Gambit and some from PVE as well. Nothing to fret over. Just normal for a dying game - franchise (Called Dying mechanics) We who are about to die, salutes you!

              • It’s been boring. Raid was kinda meh (my opinion) Nothing really going on Story was fine, but nowhere near TTK FL has been relatively quiet, maybe 5 max on D2.

              • The playerbase waxes and wanes. But a lot of folks burn themselves out by grinding relentlessly for what are meant to be longer term goals. That or, y'know, they've been playing for years. Everyone needs a break at some point. I know I have.

Not to speak for other people but for me, there's just nothing I want to engage with. I'm a week or two away from the hard cap on light level, I don't have people I want to raid with, they raised the light level of grasp of avarice too much. I'm gonna run myself into the ground this week to try and get a decent palindrome but after that? I'm probably done till next season. Also just sick of the constant bugs, Xur hasn't worked properly since WQ launched, Rahool hasn't either, just as an example. But god forbid someone finds a glitch that makes us powerful for a day or two, they nerf that -blam!- immediately.

                  • Elden ring launched recently and is over 100 hours of playtime. I’m at around 40 and I intend to keep playing long after that. Destiny 2 is my favorite game, but elden ring is my current game. I’ll take this week to play elden ring nonstop and next week to get back into destiny.

                  • There’s not enough to do. Every time, Bungie overhyped the expansion, and fails to deliver. Happens every time. There’s no point in believing it would be different. People are going to have expectations that are unrealistic with Bungies way of handling the game. Then when they realize it doesn’t meet their expectations (again), they of course, leave. This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone at this point.

Destiny has been this way for almost 8 years. Destiny 1/2=Clan killer. Just wait until next season when the seasonal content is all that is new.

                        • That’s because they continue to ignore the core of the game. It’s become so stale. Pinnacle system is awful, Vanguard/Crucible playlists are ignored and unrewarding, and Master raids require you to farm bounties just so you can do the same mechanics while getting spammed by champions (which is another thing that has to go. Champions are not fun.)

                        • They need to invest in crucible it's the only way to get solid player retention even if it won't make them money it's where the player base goes to test an build into all their weapons pve is easy enough you never need a God roll but in pvp you want it for every slight advantage it gives you I mean I do the raid like 3 times a week but idk what pve players are even doing rn

                          • According to steam charts, in the last 30 days d2 lost 7% of players. Does not seem like a sharp dropoff to me. If you want to see a real dropoff, try bf 2042.
