Cobalt sighs.
“I’m not making any promises.”
He loads fresh magazines into his Aklex, then heads down to the Grand Hall.
Yeah, but if y’all aren’t gonna react to your wounds, I’m gonna make you react to them for ya! On another note, maybe it’s just NieR Replicant that’s got me on a finisher move craze, but I’m surprised y’all aren’t more into making super fancy finisher moves..
“Just do whatever you’re gonna do, I’ll do my best to help out!” Fukua says.
-
Finishing moves are a waste of time and energy. Why wait for a giant finishing move with a huge buildup when you can just... have effective attacks?
Cobalt aims his rifle at the snake’s broken bit, planting it close, then shoots around 30 rounds into the snake.
-
You’re thinking of special moves, though I’ll make the case for both. Special moves allow you to surpass your regular power limits, at the cost of a buildup/special gauge/cast limit, etc. Say, for example, Cobalt can normally only use his enhanced strength to lift something of 10 weight, any more and he’d get called out for god modding. Well, since a super move can only get used with certain conditions, it’s not considered god modding anymore to briefly hop up to being able to carry 50 weight. Ideally you have effective normal attacks and some good specials. Finisher moves are like that, but even better, because rather than needing to charge up a super gauge, they’re just given to you for free. It’s your chance to go as crazy & over the top as you want (within reason), and the DM just hands them to you as the last hit on an enemy.
Your shots cause the snake to waver off course, crashing into several walls, gradually slowing down as it went. Fukua took the opportunity to run down the snake’s head, and use her hair to swing off the ceiling, landing a bit down the path. Her hair began to glow bright green, and form a large drill in front of her. The snake crashed into her, sending her sliding back, though she managed to keep her footing. After a few seconds, the drill began to crack through the front, and you heard your bullets cracking through the bottom. Eventually the snake came to a halt completely. Whether from stumbling off from inertia, or hopping off yourself, you land next to Fukua on the ground in front of the snake. Her glow had died down, and the drilling had stopped, and from here you can see that your combined attacks left most, if not all of the vines on the head cracked. Before either of you could do anything, the head burst open, sending splinters everywhere, and revealing a staircase leading down inside the serpent.
Hard to have those for someone who doesn’t enjoy flair, you know? But even if it was, it’d just be ‘Cobalt uses funny ammo for more damage.’ But that’d be impractical, because why wouldn’t he just use that ammo by default? I guess it just works better for magic users. Or those who rely on heavy melee.
Cobalt lets the splinters ricochet off his armor, and gets up to go down the staircase, training his rifle downwards.
-
Simple; a small amount of ammo available. You could also have a special gun on standby with only a few shots (like a mini missile launcher, or piercing laser gun), or cranking some of your robot features (like strength for example) into overdrive. That being said, I’m not telling you to get one if you don’t want one, just explaining the appeal, and saying there’s a lot of sci-fi options, too. It’s not just you, though. Nobody seems to have anything in mind for finishing off baddies, and I just thought that was weird. Y’all are weird.
“Not even going to question if it’s a trap?” Fukua asked, following you down. “And aren’t we supposed to be going up? I hope we didn’t walk into some infinite labyrinth type deal.”
-
Ill take being weird. I have a preference to machines rather than real people, and I would rather shoot someone rather then have to talk to ‘em.
Cobalt keeps walking. “If it’s a trap, we spring it. Easy.”
-
I don’t know what that has to do with anything. We were talking about different ways of shooting things, not shooting vs. talking. :p
“I don’t know if you know how traps work, but usually them going off is a bad thing.” Fukua said.
-
No, no, you said ‘y’all are weird,’ and I said, “yeah I’m weird, I’d rather shoot things then talk to ‘em.”
“We should be fine.”
-
But that part isn’t weird. 90% of RPers just want to mindlessly attack things from my experience. That’s why the RP format of “attack the bad guys” is so common, as opposed to more dialogue-centric ones. The part that’s weird is that you prefer fighting things, but don’t prefer finishing them off super cool. >.>
As you get deeper in, you eventually find yourself in a wider room with a pool of water running up to your ankles, and a red pulsating thing in its center. A foul presence swirls around it. “Well, that’s not suspicious at all.” Fukua said, putting her hand on her hip.
-
Fine, next enemy we encounter, let me know when it’s ready to be finished, and I’ll do a super cool finishing move.
“I’m gonna shoot it.”
-
Yeah! That’s the spirit! :D
“I’d normally probably say something like ‘Hold on, maybe we should analyze the area first.’ or something, but frankly I’d rather not wade through all this water for 3 hours, so I’m with you! On 3?”
-
“On 3. 3... 2... 1...” Cobalt fires a single round into the orb at the center.
-
Fukua shoots a green orb on cue, and the two shots hit the thing simultaneously, causing it to wobble back and forth on its supports. It lets out the same distorted hiss as the snake, and red energies begin swirling around it, taking the shape of two large claws. One of them curled into a fist, and launched towards you for a massive punch.
Remember movement will be hindered slightly by the water
-
Cobalt attempts to dodge the fist,(13), then fires a set of shots at the orb. (15).
-
You go to move to the side, but the water keeps you from moving too far too quickly (I’ma treat the water as a light roll penalty on movement), and the fist still grazes your side, which throws off your aim. Still, most of your shots hit before you fly off course, causing the heart to wobble a bit. Fukua meanwhile takes a melee approach, diving in, and striking the thing with a hair drill, though it has much the same effect, causing the thing to wobble some more. “I can’t tell if we’re actually hurting this thing or not..” Fukua says as it prepares its next attack. The energy coalesces into four large scythes, that begin to spin throughout the room. Fukua manages to get back towards the wall before they hit her, but the scythes are slowly spreading out, inching closer to the edge of the room.
-
Cobalt maneuvers back towards the end wall as well, throwing a grenade at the orb-heart thing. (6)
-
Yoir grenade falls wide, missing its target entirely. Luckily for you, the room isn’t that big, and the edge of the blast still manages to graze it, causing it to wobble again. However, the blades were still slowly edging closer, and pretty soon they’d be cutting through the walls themselves. The next thing you knew, a lock of Fukua’s hair wrapped around your waist, and sh uses another lock to grapple up to the ceiling. You both get carried over the blades, though one manages a cut across the front of your leg. “You’re... Really.... Heavy!” Fukua said, doing her best to hold you up. “Please do something about those blades before my neck breaks!”
-
Cobalt angles himself so he’ll fall onto the orb-heart itself, then drops. He uses his momentum to slam/stab the Sewing Sword into the orb. (17)
-
Your plunge lands cleanly, and you can see the tip of the sword begin to push through it. However, it doesn’t seem to be enough to actually break through, and you’re launched backwards as the thing wobbles again. Luckily, the attack seems to have caused the blades to vanish, and all the energy gets sucked back into the heart. Fukua lands next to you, and after a few seconds it begins rapid firing several dark bolts of magic at you like a machine gun.
-
Cobalt mutters something about leaving his shield at home, then starts running laterally around the orb (orb or heart?), firing as he does. (12)
-
Technically speaking it's neither a heart nor an orb. It's a weird ovalish thingy with two heavy tree roots coming out of its top and bottom. I'll be calling it a heart, but you're free to call it whatever you want, as long as I know what you're talking about. Also; Sidequest!
You begin running out of the way, dodging most of the shots, but the water eventually winds up dragging your feet causing you to tumble towards the ground, where you're hit by the final three shots of its barrage. Your shots manage to land, as well, causing it to wobble again. On Fukua's side, not presently being targeted by the thing, she easily manages to land to shots of her energy spheres to add to your assault. After it stopped firing, it let out a pulse of dark energy, and then a barrage of 6 homing shots launched out of its core. Three went aiming for Fukua, while the remaining three homed in on you. These ones look bigger than the other ones; they'll probably hurt a bit more.
-
Time to be in 3 conversations at once! B)
Cobalt waits for the orbs to get close, then dodges out of the way as soon as they’re about to hit. (19)
-
Like a boss!
You manage to roll out of the way of the blasts, which crash harmlessly into the water. Fukua manages to summon her spectre to block the shots on her end, and immediately counterattacks with an energy orb, which crashes into the heart. As soon as its homing attacks finished, it immediately picked right back up with its machine gun shots again, once again aiming at you. "Keep the pressure on!" Fukua yelled.
-
Cobalt quickly gets to his feet, scampering up to his feet and running towards the main heart.
-
On your way towards it, you get hit by several of the blasts, causing you to fall to the ground. However, the shots stop as it begins charging up its homing barrage again, and you did indeed manage to make it all the way to the heart, albeit by sliding across the ground.
