Excessive Video Gaming To Be Named Mental Disorder By World Health Organization
The World Health Organization is adding an unexpected disorder to its list of mental health conditions in 2018. Next year, people who play an excessive amount of video games could find themselves diagnosed with "gaming disorder." WHO's beta draft of its upcoming 11th update of International Classification of Diseases characterizes gaming disorder as "a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behaviour ('digital gaming' or 'video-gaming'), which may be online (i.e., over the internet) or offline, manifested by: 1) impaired control over gaming (e.g., onset, frequency, intensity, duration, termination, context); 2) increasing priority given to gaming to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other life interests and daily activities; and 3) continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences." The inclusion of gaming disorder in the ICD-11 means health care workers and doctors can now diagnose someone with the condition. The description of the condition continues: "The behaviour pattern is of sufficient severity to result in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning. The pattern of gaming behaviour may be continuous or episodic and recurrent. The gaming behaviour and other features are normally evident over a period of at least 12 months in order for a diagnosis to be assigned, although the required duration may be shortened if all diagnostic requirements are met and symptoms are severe." Not everyone who likes to play video games has gaming disorder — plenty of people play video games without getting a diagnosis. Daphne Bavelier, a professor at the University of Geneva said, depending on the game, and how long and often you play it, video games can be a safe way of improving hand-eye coordination, enhancing problem-solving abilities, relieving stress, connecting people, and living out fantasies, Forbes reported. Gaming becomes a problem only when it causes "impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning." When you stop controlling the game and it starts controlling you — that's when WHO's definition of gaming disorder applies. Video games have become increasingly popular, with more people of all ages playing a variety of games. Because of this, video game addiction has also become a problem. The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) published in 2013 defined internet gaming disorder as a "condition for further study." This doesn't classify it as an official disorder, rather one the American Psychiatric Association says requires additional research. According to the DSM-5, the disorder is most common in male adolescents 12 to 20 years old. Additionally, a 2009 study found about 8 percent of people from 8 to 18 years old "exhibited pathological patterns of play." So, while people should continue to enjoy their downtime unwinding with the latest game, the medical community wants to make the public aware, too much of a good thing can be bad.
I understand this is an issue many people here feel very strongly about, but please try to keep discussions relevant to the original topic. Veering off into straight up political discussion is not allowed. Furthermore, please remain respectful to those who have been diagnosed with mental illnesses. This is not a platform to start discussing whether or not their illness is "legitimate". https://www.usnews.com/news/health-care-news/articles/2017-12-26/excessive-video-gaming-to-be-named-mental-disorder-by-who

    • I can see why it can be considered a mental disorder or mental illness. This is coming from a person who will spend an entire day binge gaming if I don't have access to video games for extended periods of time. Like Zeldasavior said, it releases dopamine into the brain, and excess dopamine can be addicting over a period of time. If a brain is used to getting a certain level of dopamine, any quantity lower than that won't produce the same good effects, since dopamine (along with serotonin, but this is for another time) is the "feel good" neurotransmitter, so a lot of it will make someone feel pretty damn good (stating the obvious). The body will get used to a high level of it, and that could be considered the new "normal" level. A mental disorder (according to the DSM V) is covered here. Based off of what the DSM-V considers a mental/psychological disorder, I can easily see why gaming disorder can be considered a mental disorder. It does cover a LOT of the prereqs. But I'm also glad that it also mentions that not all gamers will have gaming disorder.

Well it does seem to classify as addiction. There are people out there who lose their mind if their console is off or are away for too long. Then you have people who play 24/7 and can't take a break, some even die from starvation, they defecate where they are instead of going to a bathroom, and some take it so serious that marriages fall apart since they can't get off the console to go to dinner. I occasionally watch I think Gameranx on YouTube and they have that "weird gaming stories of <insert month>" and wow, there are stories about intense gaming that just really shows you how bad it is.

            • Lol, this is me. Oh well. Couldn't care less. I'm still a functioning member of society. I just would rather stay home and play video games than go out. Why is that so wrong?

I know a couple of pro gamers not personally but i know for a fact they play fighting games for like 6-7 hours a day for like a week straight, for months at a time. They only play 1 game or the games they're playing in, and some don't like to call themselves gamers because they make a career out of it, only playing those fighting games and not really much else. They don't spend all their time just gaming, they travel and make connections and whatever else normal people do, but sometimes most of what they do is gaming some of their lives revolved around it. So my question is, is the only difference between someone having a gaming mental illness and being normal, is to be the undisputed champion or winner? Does someone who practices singing for 7 hours day for a week straight have a mental disorder? Is someone who plays the guitar for 10 hours a day obsessed? These are acceptable because they're considered tools towards a future career, everyone should know it's common sense that anything excessive is bad for you.

                • I’m not sure how this “makes sense”.. I bet they’d stop playing video games if they had no console or roof over their heads. It’s not like crack cocaine where you can literally suck dick for some. Rubbish!

                  • Umm... Yeah. Playing video games releases dopamine into the brain, so it can be addictive. They're just applying addiction to video games. It's no different from any other type of addiction, except that it's not nearly as destructive on the body as substance addictions. Plus, most gamers don't put gaming above all else, so most gamers aren't gonna be diagnosed with I guess what is now "gaming addiction." I just don't like how some news outlets are portraying it. One outlet I saw literally just kinda skimmed over it in a matter of seconds, basically saying that if you play too much video games, you could have a problem. It's technically semi-true, but it didn't at all go into detail about the matter. So, of course, my family jumped on me a bit about my gaming habits, and I'm just like: "I got all A's during this last semester of college, I'm in a club at my school, and I don't put gaming above my family and friends. I don't at all qualify for the actual requirements of a positive diagnosis."

                    • Well, logically, it's the same as something like gambling or any number of other activity addictions. So it makes total sense to me. Honestly, I think it should be expanded to "digital media" addiction. Because, once again, playing a video game for twelve hours a day is "bad" but watching netflix for that long is "normal"

                        • I feel like excessive gaming and gaming addiction is more the result of other factors like stress and depression rather than its own thing that causes people to disconnect themselves from everyone else. This same situation could replace gaming with anime, TV, drugs, and sleep and they'd all work cause they can all be done excessively and usually are when an individual is faced with large amounts of stress or are depressed. I think the best thing to do would not be sending everyone who stays at home and plays a bunch of video games a disability check to fuel their growing addiction, but they should be sent to a therapist to discuss what is causing stress in their lives and they would be limited in playing video games.
