Any advice for someone who doesn't use handcannons very much?

Time your shots. Aim for the head. Don't go in and spray all your rounds quickly. Use chain of woe and Gunslingers trance if you're a hunter. Get gauntlets that increase your reload speed with HC. Remain cool under fire, you can generally kill a person with an auto rifle so long as you hit quick headshots. Practice using a HC, learn how to properly control its recoil.
