Why do I suck so bad at Destiny PVP?

Alright prokillers, here's your chance to school somebody who will actually appreciate it. Quick backstory; Last time I played an FPS in PVP was when Marathon was hot property, so some of my problems may just be because I'm really rusty. Anyway, what's the deal with PVP in Destiny? I feel like I'm just doing it all wrong...every time I blink somebody gets me with a one-shot kill and it doesn't seem to matter much what weapon they're using, or what I'm trying to do to stay alive. None of my weapons feel anywhere near as powerful as what the other team is using. Honestly I really want to like the Destiny PvP experience, because I've got a sentimental attachment to Bungie and this game is lots of fun for me in PvE. So help me out. How do I get the most out of this game? I've got military experience (which basically boils down to having a great deal of training in following instructions) and lots of time to kill once the game ships (retired), so if you folks can boil this particular PvP system down to some basic tactical and strategic elements I'll be able to pick up on it and have fun with it, but right now I'm feeling pretty worn down after having the brakes beat off me repeatedly in the beta. Thanks in advance for your thoughts (and for the inevitable insults from the kids table). p.s. Don't think I'm blaming the game...obviously people are winning at PvP, so the system works...I just down understand how it works yet, so I'm not one of them.

  • I'm not great myself, but I did figure out that it wasn't worth even trying before level 20. Since crossing level 20 and getting better gear, I'm actually getting kills and am able to try different weapons and tactics and see improvement. Before level 20 I just got one shot killed constantly, as soon as I'd respawn. I also prefer to play control because I feel like it helps you learn the maps faster and people do tend to work as a team a little more, which makes observing the good players tactics easier. (There's always that one jackass who runs around killing everyone and never capturing anything, lol... Just don't be him. In those cases, I wish you could shoot people on your own team.)

  • I'm sort of average but what helps me the most. Is knowing the map and knowing how you want to play. For the map, know the routes, where people tend to go, where special ammo spawns. For how you play; do you like range shooting or close quarters? Don't go off on your own. Try to have a flank buddy. Also if your game is suffering because your trying a bounty, ditch the bounty for your go to. Hope this helps.

  • Im terrible at pvp but slowly improving as i play more. First thing is watch mini map: see where enemy are at and look where teamates are dying. Try to stay close to teammates. Going off alone will get you teamed up on and killed. Work on your aim. Stay on target. Headshots. Most of all dont get discouraged. Have fun and not care when you get killed there is no stopping it at times.

      • What I have found the trick to be for me is these three things 1.shoot at their head 2. keep your aim on him 3. shoot first ps: also learn the art of the jump and do not be afraid to run and recover. this is the art of the game, this is not call of duty my friend.

      • Grab the nearest gun to you and shoot yourself in the foot. If you couldn't move your foot out of the way of the bullet in time you will never be good. Dem reaction times.

I use a handcannon and seem to do decent, I tried the other weapons, the didn't deal damage quick enough for my tastes. I spend most of my time looking at the radar, using peripheral vision for running around. I only focus fully when I need to shoot. Edit: WideningTuna is right, posture helps.

          • Well from my experience it comes down to which game mode you like to play. I prefer control. The key to control is controlling two hot spots and leaving your enemy to contain the garbage one. If a team has total control the enemy may respawn anywhere... Which might end up right behind you. With knowing the control spots you will have a good idea of level design and be able to tactically presume where your enemy is coming from and or where you will attack from. From there you adjust your game style. Most people pack a shotgun and auto rifle. Shot gun is instant in close quarters. And auto is for that spray and pray. Crouch to keep yourself blinking on the radar. And use your radar like crazy.

          • Practice, repetition, and choose a style you'll have the most fun with, not the best or the one that will get you most kills :) (there is no best)

          • Some good suggestions here! I appreciate the advice given. I might not be as rusty as the OP, but I feel the same way. I'm a lvl10 and constantly get owned by all the lvl20+. I know that crucible is supposed to be balanced but not sure how the armor and abilities plays into the equation. Is being a lvl20+ give you an advantage over lower level players?

            • Two things work really well for me. First make sure your sitting in an upright position. It sounds dumb but you have to be sitting up straight so u can react quickly. Second, use an auto rifle. The are really good for pvp. I'm sure there are other factors, but I don't remember them. If you need any more help or questions please let me know. I'm not claiming to be an expert, but I do have a hell of a lot of fun playing pvp and I have a positive kd. Good luck!

              • What level are you? The lower level players get a harder time at it in most of the pvp gamemodes. If that's your prob just grind some more in pve and return. A lot of it is learning the maps as well. Knowing there is a doorway that leaves you or an enemy exposed is a big advantage. Good luck out there

              • I feel the same way about Crucible. It is unbalanced in certain ways, despite the efforts to level out the playing field between low and high level players. What I have learned that is imperative to gameplay is that this is not Call of Duty, meaning you can't run around solo expecting to kill the whole entire team like a lone wolf. It's way more team oriented. STICK WITH YOUR TEAMMATES. Conform, and don't get caught walking alone by two enemy players. That's the key. Stick together, and you'll all be one driving force.

                • Watch your radar and exploit it. If you see an enemy coming to your way, just wait around the corner for a couple of seconds and kill him as soon as he comes to your line of sight. Map knowledge is really important. Try to remember where heavy ammo spawns and vombine your map knowledge with radar so you know where you will meet your enemies. Try to aim for the head. If you are good at headshotting, use an handcannon. If not, then take a pulse rifle which will likely recoil the last bullets to head when aimed on the center of the body, or just go with an auto rifle you can control. A good tactic to use with shotgun is slide towards an enemy>shoot when close>melee. Some people see this as a cheap tactic, but it is pretty effective. With fusion rifles, try "pre-firing"(dont actually shoot, just "warm up") your weapon when you know someone is around a corner (radar+map knoweledge). It gives your enemy less time to react when they see you. And to counter this method, listen for a fusion rifle. If you know the enemy is around a corner waiting with a fusion rifle, try sliding around the corner and double-meleeing or shooting with a shotgun. I really can't give good tips on team game modes because I play mostly rumble (I just don't like losing only because of bad team mates or being unable to fight against a chatting fireteam)

                  • What I normally do is use auto rifles. Aim for the head and they drop fast. Shotguns for close quarters and Melee afterwards if the enemy doesn't die. I haven't tried much any other primaries and secondaries so I'm just telling you what works for me.

                  • Takes practice.. People forget that it's a new ip and its gonna take awhile to get the hang of it. Also always aim for the head. It helps a lot.

                    • OP or anyone, I maintain a KD of about 2.0 averaged out over all games and usually come out on top of the roster. If you want to run with me I'm on Xbox 1 GT: Gjallarh0rn I wouldn't mind running some people through the crucible, just add me on XBL with a message that you're wanting to PVP

                    • Honestly In a FPS game you're only as good as the team you play with in my opinion so I'd try to gather up some friends who are at least decent and you should be fine.

I'm not too familiar with other classes Supers, but I know some weapons are a pain if aimed right: hand cannons and snipers. Those will definitely kill you with a shot to the head. Your weapons are definitely as powerful since the damage is normalised across all players, which means no one will be dealing insanely more damage than you can. If they're killing you quickly even with an auto-rifle, it means they're shooting at your head. Furthermore, I tend to get high latency at times due to my geographical location and I compensate for that by shooting longer into the enemies to make sure they're really dead. Often times, we both die together. Don't melee too early; shoot them first before meleeing (even when your melee ability is up). I made the mistake a few times, I found that they will die to a melee ability (I'm Titan) when they're ~2/3 health. Use your radar! If you want to escape, make sure you don't run towards a red segment. If you want to kill someone, run towards a red segment (avoid doing that solo, unless you're confident) Get the heavy weapons ammo when the announcer announces that. Rockets pretty much instant kills anyone, MGs mow down players incredibly fast, it's not even funny. Pair that with headshots, and you're on your way to victory (subjective; since the team has to win, but hey, if you're looking to improve your K/D..) Use your grenades when you know someone is hiding behind cover. Very useful when you're in the middle of a firefight and people are dodging to reload. I just started Crucible yesterday, and I think I enjoy it quite a bit, deaths are common, but I'm working on it. K/D above 1 for most, if not all games.
