Alright prokillers, here's your chance to school somebody who will actually appreciate it.
Quick backstory; Last time I played an FPS in PVP was when Marathon was hot property, so some of my problems may just be because I'm really rusty.
Anyway, what's the deal with PVP in Destiny? I feel like I'm just doing it all wrong...every time I blink somebody gets me with a one-shot kill and it doesn't seem to matter much what weapon they're using, or what I'm trying to do to stay alive. None of my weapons feel anywhere near as powerful as what the other team is using. Honestly I really want to like the Destiny PvP experience, because I've got a sentimental attachment to Bungie and this game is lots of fun for me in PvE.
So help me out. How do I get the most out of this game? I've got military experience (which basically boils down to having a great deal of training in following instructions) and lots of time to kill once the game ships (retired), so if you folks can boil this particular PvP system down to some basic tactical and strategic elements I'll be able to pick up on it and have fun with it, but right now I'm feeling pretty worn down after having the brakes beat off me repeatedly in the beta.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts (and for the inevitable insults from the kids table).
p.s. Don't think I'm blaming the game...obviously people are winning at PvP, so the system works...I just down understand how it works yet, so I'm not one of them.

A good auto rifle has good stability and range. A good sniper rifle should have a good fire rate. A good fusion rifle should have good charge time and range. A good shotgun should have range and a large magazine. A good machine gun should have good range, stability and impact. A good hand cannon should have good impact and large magazine/ fast reload. A good pulse rifle does not exist. A good scout rifle should have high impact. A good rocket launcher should have good velocity and preferably tracking rockets. Check radar every now and then when sniping. Staying still/ crouching makes you harder to find on radar. Don't shoot from the hip ever except with rocket launchers and shotguns. Save supers for the right moment and don't use them as a panic button. Don't try and take on vehicles on your own. Wait for teammates to gather round before collecting heavy, unless there is an enemy on the radar. Turrets will rip you apart. Always let enemies come to you and don't let yourself be lured into ambushes. Shotguns are the best pvp weapon. Remember to defend your zones in control. And that's it.

Radar.

High Impact weapons and Supers. Let Aim Assist do the heavy lifting.

4 RepliesI don't know exactly what works and what doesn't. I'll give you my tactic and see where you can go from there. My main is a level 29 hunter, for PVP I primarily use bladedancer. The most common technique used that i've seen is the Shotgun-Melee combo. Simple, get in close enough to take their shields down with one shot from the Shotgun, then Melee them to finish them off. Then there's the occasional sniper. Headshots really count in destiny, so if you're smart enough on positioning, and you're a decent shot, you could fare well on bigger maps. People tend to use their super a LOT. Some use it as a last resort to keep from getting killed and get a kill in the process, although the majority of us wait for the opportune moment to use. Especially in control, or objective game modes like that. Any super can quickly clear out a small designated area. I usually end up knifing people with the blink strike a lot more than I intend. But that's just me and my hunter. Fusion rifles are decent if you know how to handle them, scout rifle's are good now, since they buffed them in the patch. Hand cannons are really particular for hunters, since headshots for hunters hurt more than other classes, and the hand cannon has high impact and damage. I prefer auto rifles, especially my Suros Regime. Hope this helps, even though I get the feeling all I did was state the obvious

Edited by Adam: 9/27/2014 9:58:53 AMFirstly, Get yourself a Shingen. They're an all-round excellent AR that are easy to use, good in most situations and very friendly to new players. Learn to use your grenades not just to get kills, but to make sure all gunfights are on your terms. Someone hiding behind a corner? Chuck a grenade to force them out. Someone chasing you when you're low on health? Chuck a grenade and back pedal. Basically, make sure that if you get into a firefight, the odds are stacked in your favour. If they aren't use your grenades to allow you to escape combat and retreat. Pay attention to your tracker. Unless they're crouching, this allows you to known where the enemies are at all times. When you see red on your tracker, picture where exactly they are, and from there, decide whether to engage or not. If not, crouch to avoid the firefight. Time your melee attacks. Just like in Halo, most firefights will end with a melee attack. Don't make the mistake of meleeing too early though. Wait until you have lowered their shield to at least half, then end the firefight with a melee attack. Do it too early and you leave yourself open, which 9/10 times results in a death. After playing for a while, the timing of when to melee will become instinctive. Don't waste your super. Seriously. I try not to ever use them for a one-on-one situation, because it's just overkill. Even if it guarantees you survive, it's still not worth it. Save them for either attacking or defending a capture point and you'll find yourself getting tons of triple kills. Stick to Cover. This is so basic, but the amount of people that just run out in the open is ridiculous. When you're moving around the map, keep yourself in cover. move from Point A to be Point B utilizing every bit of cover you see. There are lanes that leave you exposed to other players as it is, so minimize your exposure as much as possible. Use rockets for their splash damage. Never try and hit someone in the torso with a rocket launcher. Ever. just like in Halo, jump to get the angle and fire at their feet: The splash damage will kill them. If you come up against a rocket launcher, JUMP and HOVER. Stick with your team mates. No matter what, try and keep a team mate around you at all times.

Its ppls playstyle that make all the difference. Super kills or ohk weapons get u only so far Flank, strafe, pre aim, and never follow opponents. Try to get them to make the mistakes 1st After playing pve which is really slow paced with easy to target enemies, pvp feels a bit alien. It takes getting used to but is very strategic and fun if u get the hang of it. Destiny has great gameplay mechanics unused in pve, in pvp they give u the upper hand to outsmart others which many never use cuz they panic in gunfights. Practice in control, not in clash, skirmish, or rumble though. It'll just click eventually

1 ReplyI just want to take a moment to thank everyone on this thread, including people who aren't "playing halo for 4 years" and blah blah blah. I'm not even at the level of the OP ("Marathon, what's dat?"), but the replies on this thread have helped out immensely as opposed to anything else I've read prior. I'm no leet but the frustration got lowered by a megaton and I've already noticed some improvement. Thank you for all the thoughtful, on-topic replies! You're helping more people than you know, and I thought I'd be one of those who share that. I'm sure it will pay off having the pug quality on Crucible increase some LOL

I dont consider myself a pro or anything but I found the best way to familiarize yourself with maps is to play control or clash. In control try to invade as much as possible. Having to run between objectives helps a lot considering their spread out across the map. In clash, just follow your team mates and watch their backs. If they start shooting in a direction, you'll want to focus your attention that way. If its a 1v1 and they go down in a firefight, the other guy should be easy pickings. Also goes without saying but always pay attention to your radar. If all else fails, I love using sticky grenades. If the opponent is dropping your health faster than your dropping his, start running backwards, i find that 9/10 times, they will chase you to get that kill. Toss a sticky when he turns that corner or when hes charging you. I use this bait method when I want to get post mordem medals for bounties.

A few things. This game is all about shooting first for the most part. There are only a few play styles that support running around fast paced, and that's blink/shotty users or skilled hand cannon users. For most all other weapons it pays to move around the map methodically making sure if someone pops up, you have the jump on him. Obviously if you are highly skilled you can do w.e, but I recommend the above. Learn when to use your grenades. Get heavy ammo everytime it spawns. Rocket launchers are the current meta, but learning choke points with a machine gun can help you completly take over a game. Some of my best games involve me getting 15-20 heavy ammo kills. Watch a stream like fizzor. He will teach you about map flow, recognizing where you opponents are going to spawn is important. I have focused on these things over the past 3 weeks and dramatically increased my kd. I'm probably trending a 2 kd atm, hard to move the big base of bad from when I first started the game. But I'm slowly lifting the average.

Join the club. I am a level 21 and I am absolute crap. Played Rumble today for the first time and it was almost embarrassing. I am totally talentless in FPS yet I persist in the hope I improve. That said having co-ordination issues after a stroke doesn't help but I don't mind admitting I am a poor player.

5 RepliesI'll give you the down low. PVP consists only of supers, shotguns, and fusion rifles (and the occasional auto rifle) I've tried every angle to break free of that trend but in all honesty the only way to win is to be as cheap as your opponents. That means using your super on one enemy, only using your secondary weapon and using your power weapon as soon as you get ammo. Hide in corners and ruin everyone's day, teabag ghosts and make enemies for life. All in all be a complete douche. You'll be hated but hey you'll place first...maybe. I've kinda given up on PVP

Doubt you still want advice, but my k/d and knowledge is quite good. Learn to back up and run from bad situations. Stay with your team. Get a scout rifle with stability. Perfect weapon to learn accuracy with and has tons of range. Depending on your accuracy if good use hand cannons, if bad use auto. Use shotgun as your special, but never use it unless someone has you cornered. Never rush with it or use it like a primary. Don't use your super unless the situation calls for it. It's not going anywhere.

Because PvP is horribly unbalanced
-
6 RepliesYou don t suck at PvP, PvP sucks. If they removed the super from online it would be a thousand times better
-
You just need to play more. Repetition is what makes good players. Also, the pvp n this game is not very good nor balanced so don't worry if you aren't rocking it everytime .
-
Get a fusion rifle and get comfortable with its charge time. If you can learn to soak a bit of damage you will find there's not a better mid to close range gun. Just take wide turns around doors because a shot gun point blank will win. Have it half way charge as you come up on an enemy and you will win
-
5 RepliesHow to win at the Crucible: 1. Use Auto Rifle (at least until the update hits). 2. Use shotty at ALL times in CQB situations. When in doubt, whip it out. 3. When Heavy Ammo spawns, haul ass to get it, regardless of what you're doing. 4. Headshots. 5. Don't wait too long to use your Super. Use it, then work on getting another one. Cheers.

3 RepliesBe aggressive. This is not a tactical, planning mans game. It's very much like CoD in that if you live for 45 seconds you're playing wrong. Mindlessly run towards the red on your radar, get your shotty out; shoot then melee. If you live, drop a grenade, reload and repeat. It's brainless. Very arcadey and fast twitch.

Im working right now and taking a break on the toilet so I don't have much time. But destiny is more like halo than any other game, I've always had a good k/d ration on PvP modes in most shooter games. Here is the just of what to do. Think outside the box, this isn't cod or any modern shooter where 3 well placed shots kill ur enemy, so the element of surprise is always the best. Number two, you can't get super fast kills easily, so taking down two opponents who both have eyes on u is highly unlikly if u see 2 enemies heading ur way or an abundance of red markers on ur radar, run the other way and either flank them or set them up around a corner to be ambushed by a shot gun. When ur shields are knocked down and health is exposed RUN!!!! Ur sheilds recharge pretty quickly if u stay unharmed for about 5 seconds, once ur shield had recovered u should be in a great position to surprise the enemy chasing u. NEVER CHASE SOMEONE YOU HAVE ALMOST KILLED, trust me the one kill isn't worth dying for, if they run they are doing right and hoping to leas u into ur own death and another point for them. Another thing when an enemy is closing in on u and u suspect the are coming around a corner and know where u are jump as high as possible, they will be searching ground level as u get an advantage of seeing them and probably will land out of their vision. Theae are a couple steps that should help. Watch good players on YouTube and pay attention to the habits they have. Most likely if you follow in their footsteps u will eventually get a natural technique of your own.

1 ReplyDo not get close to enemy players. They are 90% of the time using close range, 1-hit-kill tactics. Literally 90% of players in this game are retarded at range.

Have you ever thought about changing classes? Maybe the titan just isn't for you.
