Alright prokillers, here's your chance to school somebody who will actually appreciate it.
Quick backstory; Last time I played an FPS in PVP was when Marathon was hot property, so some of my problems may just be because I'm really rusty.
Anyway, what's the deal with PVP in Destiny? I feel like I'm just doing it all wrong...every time I blink somebody gets me with a one-shot kill and it doesn't seem to matter much what weapon they're using, or what I'm trying to do to stay alive. None of my weapons feel anywhere near as powerful as what the other team is using. Honestly I really want to like the Destiny PvP experience, because I've got a sentimental attachment to Bungie and this game is lots of fun for me in PvE.
So help me out. How do I get the most out of this game? I've got military experience (which basically boils down to having a great deal of training in following instructions) and lots of time to kill once the game ships (retired), so if you folks can boil this particular PvP system down to some basic tactical and strategic elements I'll be able to pick up on it and have fun with it, but right now I'm feeling pretty worn down after having the brakes beat off me repeatedly in the beta.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts (and for the inevitable insults from the kids table).
p.s. Don't think I'm blaming the game...obviously people are winning at PvP, so the system works...I just down understand how it works yet, so I'm not one of them.

Because it suck. Heavy ammo is overpowered. Fusion rifles are a bit overpowered they can oneshot from bulshit range. Not to begin with anoyying shotgun -blam!- with way too much ammo they can and are using it as an primarie wich is bulshit. If u kill somebody u see the kill 5 seconds later. No im not happy with the crucible

Stay alert, stay alive. But for real, pieing corners works, just have to have some quickness. You can't go Rambo. Your radar of your biggest friend, but know if you see them on it, they see you. When at range, aim at the neck or upper chest to compensate recoil. Don't be scared to run. If you're surrounded, get out and run towards your team.

I feel your pain. When I first started pvp in this game I was terrible. Part of it was being rusty in pvp games. Part of it was not knowing maps, weapons, heavy ammo drop points, and class abilities. This may be a long post but I'll explain how I got better. Obviously the first part is practice and learning the maps, including heavy ammo drop points. Knowing these things will seriously help. Secondly use the right weapon. This is really based on your play style. There are better weapons than others in the crucible, but use the ones that fit your play style the most. I usually use the mythoclast as primary, but i may use an auto rifle or hand cannon instead. I generally stay away from scout rifles and pulse rifles I pvp but again, it's mostly personal preference. Always aim for the head. If you don't and your opponent does, you lose. For secondaries I think shotguns or fusion rifles are best. Yes you can do well with snipers but realistically pvp maps are made for fast paced close quarters combat. Use whatever the hell you want for a heavy weapon. If you get the drop its not hard to kill enemies with a heavy. Learn what abilities work best for your class/subclass. For instance the striker has shoulder charge and fist of havoc that are absolutely devastating. Also, check your radar with a quick glance every 3 seconds or so. Practice will make you better. Find what weapons fit your class and style and tear it up.
-
Impact is everything on an auto rifle in PVP. Aim for the neck and head. Also, very important, Take a couple of muscle relaxers and a shot of bourbon before you start.
-
Aim for the head, use a good stability gun, try to get behind the enemy
-
Well, use the radar, it's the perfect tool to use when you play on that map a good amount of times. Also, use your grenades wisely. I'm a hunter, and I use Gunslinger, so they grenade i have is a laser triggered one. So I stick it to places no one would expect. Finally: Practice Practice Practice
-
Choose a gun. Learn the recoil of it. If you learn to play well with the gun then you can make any weapon beast. Choose a LOADOUT that fits your subclass for example a sunsinger warlock in my opinion does best at close range so I would go with a auto rifle or TLW along with a shotty. Play the objective if there is one. Stay with the team but not so close that grenades or supers can kill you all.
-
Assuming you're a competent enough shot that if you have a first shot advantage you win: Most games of control unless lopsided in teams devolve into a clusterf*ck for point B. All in all, you want to move around with your team basically unless you have either heavy ammo or are looking to land a good super. One thing to keep in mind though, is whatever you might have, chances are the other team has as well. (supers, heavy ammo) Spawns in this game are also kind of silly, and in Destiny there are just going to be times when you were in a bad place at the wrong time. Don't stress over it.

1 ReplyThe lag may play a massive part....sometimes I'll be dead even before I fire off a shot, and that is before the can even see me - he's seeing things .5 a second before me. This happens all the time in the Crucible, Bungie need to fix that!

8 RepliesEdited by Blam031312: 1/23/2015 4:48:40 PMLearn the maps Learn where the enemies are going to spawn Watch your radar Assume everyone has a shotty/fusion Practice your headshots Practice using your supers...effectively Practice using your grenades...effectively Practice using your heavy weapons Practice Practice Practice Edit: I recommend getting good with a sniper. If you can do that, your primary use will improve as well. Edit 2: despite what the k/d kings say..k/d is secondary to winning. If I can sacrifice a death to keep B or the better A/C flag, I count that as a win Edit 3: staying alive trumps getting a kill. Try not to move around the map solo. Focus fire. Edit 4: if your injured, fully recover before leaving cover. A good % of my kills are from people poking their red health head out of cover. On the flip side, if you injure someone and they run behind cover, keep shooting. There's a good chance they can't resist continuing the engagement.

Edited by RespawningJesus: 1/23/2015 4:31:18 PMKnow the maps. If you are playing control, know what points are worth taking. As for shooting ability, that all comes down to you. My advice is to first try finding an aiming sensitivity that is right for you, and then just play the game. You're gonna struggle. Some people you play against have years of experience playing FPS games. Some people are going to trash you. Try treating every life you have in a game as if it your last. Your radar is an important tool, use it. You can easily tell where people are going to be coming from with it if you know your way around the maps. Learn some of the best routes to take from one point of the map to another point. Learn the hot spots of the maps. Try going for headshots as much as possible. Try playing with others, especially those who can teach you.
-
Take your time watch your radar. and pay attention to your spawn poits. it will give you an idea of where the enemy is spawning. and then focus on points of engagement. there are only so many paths you and your enemy can take. stick with team mates and only challenge enemies in a way that gives you an advantage. Run and gun doesn't work well in destiny especially against good player's. Theres no magic set up thats going to make you play better so ignore all the people trying to tell you there set up and just use what you like and are comfortable with and use it to your advantage

4 RepliesI feel you, bro. For the life of me, I can't figure out how I'm managing to get myself dead so fast. I'm pretty comfortable with the maps now and I understand how shotguns nail me sometimes. What I don't get is how people are killing me at a distance with an auto rifle. It takes me forever to kill people with my V8. I just can't seem to quickly get a bead on someone's head. Other people do t seem to have that problem when aiming at me. It has to boil down to a lack skill on my part. I just wish I knew how to improve. I'd be interested to see what people's look around speed is set at. I play at a 5. Anymore than that and I find myself over shooting the target.

Hey guys here's a solid first bit of some iron banner gameplay of me destroying https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CODwjT1oOK4 Like, comment and subscribe Thanks

experience will always be your greatest asset. there's not necessarily a trick to it but just try to learn the maps, gain an understanding of players movements and become comfortable with your weapons and make sure they suit yr playstyle. I started out really crappy in pvp for the first few months as i dont usually play competitive pvp fps but after lots and lots of games i started to figure out my own strategy and what worked for me.... Just focus on having fun whilst trying to improve and go for the HEADSHOTS! good luck guardian.

3 RepliesTeenage Mutant Ninja CoDers, Teenage Mutant Ninja CoDers, Teenage Mutant Ninja CoDers, murder in a half shell! DUTY POWER! People who play tons of competitive FPS are going to ruin people who don't. The super abilities in Destiny - which I think were actually put in to make the game more newcomer-friendly - are winbuttons in the hands of the seriously skilled. I suck at competitive FPS; I can say it with no ego. I think my KDR in the few matches I've played is something like .0000000001, or maybe an unmeasurable number. The very best I did in a match was 6 kills, 7 assists when the rest of my team had over 20 kills each. Truth is I want to get better at the PvP, but it's as much of a painful grind as is the rest of the game. People who learn maps well and have lightning-fast reflexes do better. (At 45 y/o my reflexes are for shyte. :-P) All I think we can really do is learn to do well what we can, and deal with the rest. Keep trying anything and you get better eventually, especially if you can run with more skilled people who can give tips and feedback. It is unfortunately hard to find skilled FPS-ers who aren't kind of jerks about it, though. Sorry people, but you know I'm right.

Edited by unif1end: 1/9/2015 1:22:06 PM1. Watch your radar. Its your best weapon in PvP. 2. Weapon damage is standardized, so choose one with good stats like stability, rof, impact (yes although damage is standard, impact does provide small differences.) Weapon quality (greens, blues, purples or exotics) does not matter. I use a blue Galahad-E as it has focus fire. 3. Memorize maps, stick to sections of the map you're strong at. 4. Do not camp. Other than large maps like skyshock, camping is useless with the radar on. You're more likely to get a shotgun to the face or a surprise grenade. 5. Headshots determine whether you're the last guardian standing in a 1v1 situation. 6. DASH for that heavy ammo. And wait for your teammates to arrive if possible, as it spawns multiples for them. Preferably use machine guns. 7. Stick with teammates, unless your opponent is going for a super or is brandishing a rocket launcher. Then keep your distance. 8. Run and recover when you need to. Don't rush into battle with a red bar. 9. Don't give up. EDIT : One last thing, know your playstyle. Are you a long range or close range fighter? Then choose your loadouts accordingly.

If you are good at things like call of duty you will be a good pvp player simple I don't tend to use the pvp at all but when I do I come 1st or 2nd
-
Radar Don't rush Learn maps and map flow Play control Play with a fireteam Aim for the head Share heavy ammo Pre aim Keep some distance But what do I know? lol Be patient and try to have fun

2 RepliesGet good with Hand Cannons and find one with 'Send It' perk for extra distance/accuracy! When it comes to strategy and tactics, it really boils down to familiarity with the maps and heavy ammo spawns. 'Control' is a good game type to easily judge where the action will be, and makes strategy simple by posting up in traffic corridors. 'Clash' will be much more slow paced with snipers and shotty campers. If you're into strategy, and have a few friends that like PVP also, 'Skirmish' might be your thing. Some things to remember: Control does not require you to stay on the control points. Always pursue heavy ammo Use obstacles to break line of sight and recharge Seriously...If you want power, find a good hand cannon. Try out the different classes, too. Each one definitely offers different abilities for different playstyles.
-
What is your class?

3 RepliesEdited by Cyriacus: 10/7/2014 5:18:13 PMReally haven't done much in Destiny yet visa PVP but there are some must do items. 1. Learn the map backwards and forwards watch videos on you tube or play just knowing your first objective is mapping. 2. Learn the best locations on the map to catch people moving about. 3. Maps are usually geared toward certain weapons and styles understand that. 4. Practice moving and shooting while running around PVE. 5. Practice jumping and aiming at the same time while in PVE. 6. Practice jumping and firing at a jumping target (Cabal with jet packs good for that). 7. Stick with team mates.

A good auto rifle has good stability and range. A good sniper rifle should have a good fire rate. A good fusion rifle should have good charge time and range. A good shotgun should have range and a large magazine. A good machine gun should have good range, stability and impact. A good hand cannon should have good impact and large magazine/ fast reload. A good pulse rifle does not exist. A good scout rifle should have high impact. A good rocket launcher should have good velocity and preferably tracking rockets. Check radar every now and then when sniping. Staying still/ crouching makes you harder to find on radar. Don't shoot from the hip ever except with rocket launchers and shotguns. Save supers for the right moment and don't use them as a panic button. Don't try and take on vehicles on your own. Wait for teammates to gather round before collecting heavy, unless there is an enemy on the radar. Turrets will rip you apart. Always let enemies come to you and don't let yourself be lured into ambushes. Shotguns are the best pvp weapon. Remember to defend your zones in control. And that's it.
