Why do I suck so bad at Destiny PVP?

Alright prokillers, here's your chance to school somebody who will actually appreciate it. Quick backstory; Last time I played an FPS in PVP was when Marathon was hot property, so some of my problems may just be because I'm really rusty. Anyway, what's the deal with PVP in Destiny? I feel like I'm just doing it all wrong...every time I blink somebody gets me with a one-shot kill and it doesn't seem to matter much what weapon they're using, or what I'm trying to do to stay alive. None of my weapons feel anywhere near as powerful as what the other team is using. Honestly I really want to like the Destiny PvP experience, because I've got a sentimental attachment to Bungie and this game is lots of fun for me in PvE. So help me out. How do I get the most out of this game? I've got military experience (which basically boils down to having a great deal of training in following instructions) and lots of time to kill once the game ships (retired), so if you folks can boil this particular PvP system down to some basic tactical and strategic elements I'll be able to pick up on it and have fun with it, but right now I'm feeling pretty worn down after having the brakes beat off me repeatedly in the beta. Thanks in advance for your thoughts (and for the inevitable insults from the kids table). p.s. Don't think I'm blaming the game...obviously people are winning at PvP, so the system works...I just down understand how it works yet, so I'm not one of them.

  • All you need to do is relax while you play and focus a bit and listen out carefully for nearby enemies. Make sure you go over your weapon stats and test them out in a match or two to see what would best fit your load out. And from there, try it out and if it goes south, repeat the process.

  • Not really you.. More so the people who play it and use secondaries as primary a weapon.

  • watch your radar at all times.. you'll know when an enemy has spawn on the other side of the map because the side you're on is vastly empty so watch it. avoid small spaces , avoid rushing (unless you know you have the upper hand). melee only when you know you can kill them with it. use grenades to check your surrounds before walking in (axion bolts , hunter grenades). if doing control save your super for the point being captured. last but not least aim.

    • I'm not great in PvP, but I can give you advice based on what I have seen and done. 1) Always watch your radar; it is super sensitive and can detect an enemy from far away (probably 25-75m, I guess). 2) If you see a large amount of dudes, run like hell in the opposite direction. 3) Aim for the head. Weapons with Fitted Stock, Rodeo, or Perfect Balance are good. 4) Control the heavy ammo. 5) Use Supers wisely (i.e. no Fist of Panic or Nervous Bomb) 6) Look for armor that speed up melee speed and regeneration, grenade regeneration, and loading of your favorite weapon type.

    • Well... Play it safe, I'm not the best at crucible, so play it safe. Don't run in to a zone with 4 people in it and expect to kill all of them, chuck a nade and flank. FLANKING IS KEY

    • I absolutely sucked at pvp when I started out. I gradually got better, then I switched over to my titan and sucked. I was too used to playing my warlock. I just practiced and quickly got better. Here are my tips. Never be the first on to walk around the corner. If you see a blip on your radar wait for them to come to you. Learn the sniper spots. You can either use them or go kill whoever is at them. Defensive play is underrated. If you find a good hiding spot near a cp you can kill enemies before they know you're there. Note: You pop up on radar even if you are crouching and sitting still, but it does help to hide you. Armor piercing rounds can go through cover. I didn't know this until recently, but basically any object you can push (barrels boxes etc.) can be shot through. Thin grates and fences can be shot through as well. Thorn and hard light don't do this though, they only penetrate people. Take the extra split second to aim. It may kill you sometimes but you usually end up getting the kill over whoever is just wildly spamming bullets. Eventually you'll be able to hit heads faster and won't have to take as much time to aim. Speed it key! On (most) guns in pvp the faster the better. Examples: Shotguns. Fusion rifles. Sniper rifles. Hand cannons (In my opinion, some slower ones are still good) Excluding: Heavy machine guns, you want the opposite. Auto and pulse rifles as well.

You either out smart your enemy by always fighting your opponent at an unfair advantage, or you out play your enemy by practicing head shots and superior reflexes. If you can combine them both you will be unstoppable. Your radar is your best friend. You should act like you're blind without it. It's your eyes behind your head when you're alone in battle. Learn the maps. Learn where people generally congregate. Learn choke points, viewpoints, heavy/special ammo spawns, death traps, and especially where the enemy team generally is. NEVER BE AFRAID TO RUN AWAY. You aren't a hero. You will die if you fight more than 1 or 2 people. Use your class to your advantage. Realize that most of your weapons are situational. Don't run at someone like a headless chicken with a shotgun and if someone does it to you back up while you shoot them. If you're alone and you hear a blade dancer or gunslinger activate their super DO NOT CHALLENGE THEM. You will die and end up here begging for nerfs like the other people who don't realize turning and running is an option. If you see a Titan running at you not shooting realize he is going to super. You need to put him down quickly or get out of the way. Use tactics, stay on your feet, stay thinking, never underestimate your enemy, stay level headed, PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE.

Analyze the strat you use, and change to the opposite. For example: if you are slow and patient, waiting for someone to kill, you might change to run around with a shotty. Join up with fireteam members. A group is harder to beat than a sole player.

    • Its all about reaction. You want to be hard to hit so when you are engaged you should stay on the move. I like strafing and jumping all while maintaining fire on my opponent. As always you should be gunning for headshots. Your weapons don't really matter in my opinion, it's about who's better at hitting and not getting hit. You don't need to know the maps to be good but it helps. Use your instincts when it comes to supers and grenades.

Keep in mind, most people who play the Crucible are people who came from the school of Halo, which is almost identical. We have ten+ years of experience with this kind of play. It takes years to master PVP. Keep practicing.

    • I'd like to believe I'm very good at FPS games, but I'm not much of a teacher. All I can really tell you are these steps that I think outline the basics of getting good at shooters. 1.) Learn to aim. This comes before anything. If you can't kill your target, anything else you learn is pretty much useless. 2.) Learn the maps. I think this is one of the most important skills in FPS. If you understand how the map works and understand what players will do in certain spots of the map, you can always get the jump on someone. Learn the spawns, learn the hotspots, learn the flanks, learn the sight lines, etc. 3.) Learn how to move. Most beginners to shooters usually just run around mindlessly looking for something to shoot which leads to getting positioned in a bad place. Once you learn how the maps work, you'll learn where you should go and what you should avoid. Also, learn how to be a moving target. Beginners also tend to stand still when they shoot or jump around. Strafe left to right while you shoot to screw with your opponents accuracy. 4.) Stay alive. This is a good way to teach yourself how to react to certain situations. If you make your primary objective to stay alive while you're still learning how to play, by the time you get better, staying alive will be second nature to you and you can focus on the objective. Trying to stay alive at all costs will teach you when it's safe to take risks, when you should push an enemy, when you should go through that hallway or not, etc. it teaches awareness and you'll eventually pick up on how to outplay your opponent instead of running straight into his shotgun. 5.) Keep playing. Nothing is better than experience. As long as you're paying attention and not just mindlessly playing, you'll pick up on everything you need to know to be good at shooters. The best thing about FPS games is what you learn in one will most likely contribute to another. I didn't start actually playing FPS until MW2 and once I got good on there, I just applied what I knew to every FPS I played and I'm just as good there as well. Good luck and be patient, it'll take time to improve.

I'm by no means a PvP expert, but maintain around a 1.9 K/D. All I can say is, learn the maps. Know the funnel points and where people are likely to spawn. If you're getting one shot, don't get caught running blindly around corners, this game is full of shotgun and fusion rifles noobs. Also, remember the heavy ammo timers and where they spawn. It's usually around 9:00, 5:50, and 2:30, approximately. Oh, and learn where campers generally camp.

      • I'm not pro or anything, but get armor with perks that suit ur play style, u like auto rifles? Get gauntlets with speed reloader for auto rifles, carries more ammo for ur preferred weapons, and ur chest of alpha lupi is good in pve but for Titans there's much better exotic armor pieces for pvp. Guns are the same, perks on the gun make it a good gun or a bad gun. The other thing is go into pvp with a fireteam, 2 or 3 man fireteams wreck in crucible as they're communicating. Also if ur playing and someone else is wrecking, inspect him/her to see what weapons, what armor they're rocking.. May help

      • What kind of display are you using? I was playing on an older 47" HDTV and bought a gaming monitor to avoid fighting over it with the missus. On the big TV winning was an extreme rarity and I floated around the bottom of every FPS I played. The very first control match I played with the gaming monitor (with a 1m/s response time) I got 24 or 28 kills and am top three consistently. I thought I was just getting old. I still am but can still kick some ass on games.

      • Your gun skill is not as important as playing smart. Go for the heavy ammo, hold the power positions and the kills will come easy. The one place where your gunplay is truly tested is rumble.

Higher leveled players will have advantages because of gear that gives more strength, int, disc. their supers charge faster, melee and grenades. they probably have better guns such as exotics and vex. which can really outgun people if you aim for headshots. the vex with the right upgrades can hit 45-51 while other guns can be hitting 20-30. handcannons like thorn and TLW and hawkmoon come into play with 2-3 headshots you can be killed. guns are a big factor in pvp because if you can push out more damage than your opponent then you will win the gunfights. you just need to hit your shots and hope that the enemy miss some of theirs. destiny isn't at all about objectives. you can have all 3 flags captured and still lose the game if you don't get kills, the flags are just their to multiply points gained from kills so in the end all PvP is kill based.
