Alright prokillers, here's your chance to school somebody who will actually appreciate it.
Quick backstory; Last time I played an FPS in PVP was when Marathon was hot property, so some of my problems may just be because I'm really rusty.
Anyway, what's the deal with PVP in Destiny? I feel like I'm just doing it all wrong...every time I blink somebody gets me with a one-shot kill and it doesn't seem to matter much what weapon they're using, or what I'm trying to do to stay alive. None of my weapons feel anywhere near as powerful as what the other team is using. Honestly I really want to like the Destiny PvP experience, because I've got a sentimental attachment to Bungie and this game is lots of fun for me in PvE.
So help me out. How do I get the most out of this game? I've got military experience (which basically boils down to having a great deal of training in following instructions) and lots of time to kill once the game ships (retired), so if you folks can boil this particular PvP system down to some basic tactical and strategic elements I'll be able to pick up on it and have fun with it, but right now I'm feeling pretty worn down after having the brakes beat off me repeatedly in the beta.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts (and for the inevitable insults from the kids table).
p.s. Don't think I'm blaming the game...obviously people are winning at PvP, so the system works...I just down understand how it works yet, so I'm not one of them.

1 ReplyMy personal tips For PvP, try to increase your analog stick sensitivity to "nearly high or high" (somewhere around 8-9) it might give you a chance to look around and fireback.

Edited by Woodley Bonner: 1/26/2015 11:45:12 AMYou and I have so much more trouble in PvP because unlike halo or other fps games destiny matchmaking does not have a system to match players by their skill level in PvP. So your a noob and it will match you with people with hundreds of games under their belt. So while your still learning the maps everyone else in the game knows every hidy hole and strategy. Give up on PvP like I did, destiny is all about the PvE. If you have to do thorn bounty get ready for frustration. I recommend hiding, don't rush and pray to God to get a game of noobs.

1 ReplyRule #1 don't rush

Keep practicing. I know it is cliche but it worked for many players. Just keep a eye on your radar. Experiment with diffrent weapon types.

yup, radar is so useful when it comes to looking for opponents. always keep an eye on the radar. also get good with one type of gun (i go for fusion rifles) but auto rifles and shotguns also work well. and of course the vex is OP you play the maps differently with different guns. also get used to outmaneuvering an opponent. if you want a high kd, in control go for the base where theres the most activity (usually the one in the middle) and get to know that area, so when your radar goes red, you know what to do. and then the supers...use them when theres max opponents in your vicinity for max pnts. in the rite circumstances, they are so hard to stop (Blade dancer most notable) grenades are also very good, pick the one that suits you best. (axion is so good for post mortem)

Learn how to traverse your environment. As you start to get more comfortable with getting around you find it much easier to notice enemies and track them down or get back to a defensible position. Play around with your build, knowing how to use your classes particular build well, can provide a good avenue to mastering a play style.

Radar is key! You should always be glancing at your radar and if you see red then prepare for engagement and do anything you can to optimize that engagement, sometimes turning and running is best strategy. Keep an eye out for friendlies, stay with them, if you find your self alone you may want to retreat and find a partner. Getting double teamed is never fun and rushing ahead is a good way to die fast, so i suggest as a start, do anything you can to not die, the killing will get easier with more gameplay

2 RepliesPart of what you're perceiving is that there are a lot of one-shot kills in the game: shotguns, fusion rifles, snipers, and supers all kill you instantly under the right circumstances. Another part of what you're perceiving is that your weapons might really not be as powerful as what your opponents are using--or, at least, power means something very different. High-impact weapons count for a lot in the Crucible, but Attack doesn't matter at all. The perks on your weapons also matter a lot more, since the Crucible tends to magnify small differences. (In general, focus on anything that makes it easier to aim precisely, and ignore anything having to do with ammo except on your heavy weapons.) Some exotic weapons also have an oversized impact in the Crucible; SUROS Regime and Vex Mythoclast, for instance, can kill you very quickly with headshots at almost any range. And speaking of range, another big change from PvE is the typical engagement range. You usually see things coming in PvE and can plan for them; in PvP the maps are much smaller, so the maximum engagement distance is shorter, and there are a lot more opportunities for someone to surprise you at close range. So as an example of what I do differently when I hit the Crucible (not that I'm claiming to be a great player): I switch from a consistent but low-DPS primary like my scout rifle to a high-impact AR with high stability and a low-zoom sight. I switch from whatever secondary weapon I'm using to a long-range shotgun or (preferably) a fusion rifle with a very quick charge time. I make sure I'm wearing the exotic armor I use for PvP (Voidfang Vestments, which reset my grenade cooldown when I die) rather than my PvE armor (Obsidian Mind or Light Beyond Nemesis, which offer benefits that are much more useful when I can kill dozens of badguys or resurrect friends, respectively). I change my mindset, too: I'm mostly thinking in the very short term, planning no more than a few seconds ahead. Part of the reason for that is because the pace moves too fast, but part of it is that I need the extra "processing time" to expand my situational awareness as much as possible. I have to approach every encounter with an opponent as a potential death (because it is). And finally, I get as much practice in as I can. Knowing the map geometry is key, as is knowing how people typically interact with the map geometry: where do the snipers hide, if there are any? Are there a lot of long corridors, which makes a scout rifle or long-range hand cannon a comparatively better choice, or are there a lot of short blind turns where I'll have to watch out for enemies with shotguns? I'm sort of rambling and need to get off the computer for a while, but hopefully this has been at least somewhat helpful.

It's probably because you are getting paired with players out of your skill level. Since they haven't implemented anything to stop this your sort of out of luck. Welcome to the unbalanced mess that is destiny PvP.

I say take more chances. Go for that headshot youll probably miss or throw that grenade farther then your used to. If your underskilled in the aim department youll need to have a better strategy to compete. Misdirection and trickery are a good place to start. If your being chased do the unexpected. If you clear a wall where ur not seen for turn around and bring the fight to him instead. Observe your enemies movement patterns. If they always capture in groups take note. If the dont utilize one side of the map take note. Try using different stats on your guardian. Use a setup you normally would not and tinker around. Also make sure you foward your ports to you console. Network is a HUGE part of pvp. A scrub could beat a pro on crappy internet. Dont be predictable. If youve been running around with a shotgun half the match switch it up and go something more long range to catch your opponent off guard Grenades! If heavy ammo is about to drop get your ass to the spawn point. If your too late and you opponent gets it take cover immediately Even when u think your not being watched always assume a snipers got a bead on your head. Stay moving guardian. Communication with a mic is essential to competitive pvp. Make sure you utilize your armor and weapon perks and stat boost. If your weapon says does more damage if you 360 first then do a 360. If your armor says instant health regen when u teabag opponent well make sure you do it. Make your weakness a strength. If your being shot at by a sniper close distance with them as its harder for them to target you the closer u get. Of course while returning fire whuch brings me to my next point. Suppression fire. Even if you cant see your enemy but you know where hes at control his zone of movement by fire where he would have to go to shoot you. Or if your late to realize your being shot at return firw as close as possible while moving to cover. some opponents lose skill when they rounds hitting around them. Not all but some. Hope i could help

Edited by White: 1/25/2015 7:34:59 PMKnow this post is old, but, I'd still like a shot at helping. I was decent at PVP while I was into it, not great, but decent. Normally 1st or second on my team. Anyways, one problem you have is that you haven't played shooters in a long time before this. Shooters have a steep learning curve, and not playing them in years can put you all the way back to the beginning. You've probably gotten better by now, but regardless, just keep practicing. Doesn't even have to always be PVP, just get used to the mechanics to get your brain wired for it. Second, after you've got the core mechanics down, there's still more to it. Destiny is not just a run and gun game, because of the vehicles and vertical movement. There are 3 important things to remember when doing the Crucible, that being, never pick a fight you can't win. Just fall back and look for another. Second, always give a moment of thought as to how to approach a situation. If you see someone on your radar in a room, don't just rush in and try to get the jump. They can detect you too. That's a good way to get riddled with fusion rifle bursts or shot gun blasts. And the third, know the maps. If you understand the layout, you can know just where your enemy is coming from, and how to follow through with step one.

Edited by boff: 1/25/2015 12:42:06 PMsit back and avoid ohk weapons, be more defensive, the best players sit back and let you move to them, defence is easier than attack, you will get called a camper because you are frustrating them and beating them at there own game. sitting back doesn't mean sitting in a corner with a fusion rifle, it means if your guys are capturing the control point, go out side of it, watch the area around it, the enemies will be aiming to hit the control point, they will not be expecting you to be standing off it. get a good auto rifle with high impact, the new legendary ar's are pretty rubbish, low impact high rate of fire tish tosh, im using a common auto at the moment, its a beast, marshal c i think, it on my hunter, anyway most of the rare auto rifles are better than the new legendaries . doing well is the easy part, winning is harder, use voice chat for some direction sit back avoid cqb, get a high impact auto rifle, and aim for the head.

You suck because the weapons are so imbalanced and you don't know which ones to use, and Bungie sure as hell won't tell you, so I will: Thorn and SurosRegime
-
Lag compensation and no requirement for performance since you get rewarded no matter your performance
-
Ok so you use bladedancer... if i could give you a tip in pvp use a Gunslinger, cause of throwing knife: just downed two enemies and gotten a few shots in your third but now you have to reload? Throwing knife. Now supe wise i dont realy use supers in pvp except with my titan to lockdown a control point. In pvp i use hardlight just aim at the chest up. And secondary use a fusion rifle. With gunslinger use the 1st grenade its the most like a grenade there is i use it allot on control points. Another good one could be to just follow your fellow team mates and ones you see red on your radar and your at a control point. Go get that bastard cause he wont expect it
-
Tip - don't start of playing skirmish or double skirmish thinking 2-3 enemies will make it easier, if you don't have a fire-team - don't bother with these game modes. People (maybe like me) go into these maps with a fire team and this thing called communication - pretty damn helpful, especially when you play a round agains 3 people not in a fire team.
