Alright prokillers, here's your chance to school somebody who will actually appreciate it.
Quick backstory; Last time I played an FPS in PVP was when Marathon was hot property, so some of my problems may just be because I'm really rusty.
Anyway, what's the deal with PVP in Destiny? I feel like I'm just doing it all wrong...every time I blink somebody gets me with a one-shot kill and it doesn't seem to matter much what weapon they're using, or what I'm trying to do to stay alive. None of my weapons feel anywhere near as powerful as what the other team is using. Honestly I really want to like the Destiny PvP experience, because I've got a sentimental attachment to Bungie and this game is lots of fun for me in PvE.
So help me out. How do I get the most out of this game? I've got military experience (which basically boils down to having a great deal of training in following instructions) and lots of time to kill once the game ships (retired), so if you folks can boil this particular PvP system down to some basic tactical and strategic elements I'll be able to pick up on it and have fun with it, but right now I'm feeling pretty worn down after having the brakes beat off me repeatedly in the beta.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts (and for the inevitable insults from the kids table).
p.s. Don't think I'm blaming the game...obviously people are winning at PvP, so the system works...I just down understand how it works yet, so I'm not one of them.

Im in the same boat takes a few games to get my mojo. Head shots, crouch slide and if that fails run around and punch some heads......

I never understand it. HEADSHOTS!

2 RepliesIt's cuz you don't have a striker Titan with a vex mythoclaust shotgun and rockets

Get a VEX and that will help out a lot

I'm not really one to pass advice as I am average at best at pvp but I have noticed that I am slowly getting better the more I play. The radar helps a lot and seriously the constant being killed helps as well. You start to learn how to avoid being killed. A good high rate of fire stable auto rifle with a huge mag helps a lot as well. I also find that trip mines have been a blessing as well. I know, and before everyone complains about the way I play, it's not prefered but a kill is a kill and when they are as sparse as they are with me then I will take them any way I can. Just stick with it, you may surprise yourself...... Oh yeah and try to enjoy it, I find that helps a lot as well. Not much help but thought I would add my 2 cents worth. Anyway wife is just of to bed so it's time to crucible, guardian down on repeat time.

Just uploaded a video of an insanely easy skirmish match I had yesterday... I'm slight above avg at best but I'm getting better! http://www.bungie.net/en-GB/Forum/Post/96245475/0/0 I'll play with anyone on ps4. I'm getting pretty good with a sniper.
-
Dude it's simply fight or flight. Do you take the 1 v 2 ? NOT often Use your radar and pick your fights Camp heavily trafficked areas
-
It's hard to get used to, trust me I know. But once you get the hang of the maps, learn how to use the radar, and learn what your weapon of choice is, you'll get it. Practice is the only way to improve. Sometimes you'll have a game or two where you go 0:5, then you'll bounce back with a 3:2 the next game. You just need some time on your hands to practice.

Predictability - try and predict what is about to happen, what the other player is going to do. Strafe - always move and learn to keep your reticule perfectly on enemies head. Jump - in a strafe fight a jump can throw off their aim. Do not run into a room or area you see your teammates are dying in, flank. Calmness - whatever you like to get calm I would do it before pvp. Calm, awake, and a steady hand.

Edited by Cowboysamurai369: 1/27/2015 6:56:48 AMWall o Text = Advance Apology :) Bro, I've got 150+ ps3 games and had almost every system since Pong. Not 1 have I ever played PvP. Until Destiny . In the beginning I sucked. Bad. 0 kills a game. Then 0~2 about , .01~.02. Then I met a couple of guys. They were not on my team in Skirmish. Once 6 people had come & gone before the 3 mns left I was alone. Yet determined. I was not leaving. The story has more but needless to say I play with them , 1 in particular . I tried to get better to be worth something when along side them . Now I'm a hell of a lot better. I have bad games. My k/d would be better if it wasn't for ~ 1.all the bad games I had in the first several months keep it lower till it gets outweighed. 2.i hover between 2 marks B & whichever . It helps Control ,since it's Not Domination. That alone gets me about 5~10 less kills a game , but I try to help the team NOT my k/d. So here is what I've learned~ 1. It doesn't matter how strong your gun or gear is. Just the Impact/RoF/Stability/Range/Reload of the gun. Higher is better. Plus your gear: the intellect/discipline etc. whatever you use the most is what you need higher. Anything that noticeably benefits you in PvE probably, but not always will help. Example~ having my throwing knife have combustion. If I don't have it selected in Crucible will screw me out of kills , For Certain. Many "almost" kills. Take your time trying different guns, perks. Some will get you the time needed to get kills in your play style. Some won't. Auto~ need high impact. Fusion~ accelerated coils help. Scout~Find the one that suits you.*just be sure you feel as though you master it before breakin the cherry on it in the Crucible. 2. Don't waste time with useless Exotics. Knucklehead Radar it's just training wheels , Acophlage Symbiote is great with that 4th GG shot. I use ArkhamChewbacca's Spine (90 second Tripmine ?! Vs 10 seconds, even my teammates can't keep track. A 3rd of my kills are postmortems. 3. Important~ LEARN the maps! Think outside the box. 4. Important~ CROUCH , you will be off radar , only blinking on & off once every few. It makes a vet hesitate and get cautious. And that A. Slows and disrupts the tempo B. Makes them play less their way and more yours , leveling momentum. 5. Every once in awhile say "screw it". Forget about winning or caution. When you have one of "those" matches you get pissed : Just go nuts . Run straight at them all in the cap. Jump up, throw a grenade at them & just shoot the sh*t out of everything . Do NOT stop this until it's OVER. Then you will see not only that you CAN accomplish a few kills that previously seemed crazy to attempt but now know works , but it'll alleviate some frustration , and is funny as hell to talk about with whoever saw your crazy ass doing. *i straddled Sepiks Prime & stabbed his @ss repeatedly & defiantly , establishing dominance on his round @ss while my teammates were laughing their @sses off. MOST important~ have fun, it's a game & personally I never back out when I'm getting owned. I'll refuse to quit trying to dirtnap them until they aren't in the lobby anymore. It's all determination. I'm still not as good as those 2 guys (Reap200 is ps4 now) but I still play with Aerial_Collision & he's in the top 2~3% so I don't feel bad about it at all. Just have fun & good luck, you can message me anytime & I'll help any way I can. Peace... SORRY FO DA WALL ' O TEXT...

,1) age related 2) reaction time 3) no matter how good we think we are as ageing creeps up reactions creep down and vision especially peripherals don't give older players what youth has speed to react faster certainly faster than me maybe 40 years ago I could have held my ow but a big but today's players brought up on video games
-
get thorn, suros, hawk moon, praedyths revenge....... problem solved
-
I've gotten a lot better when I learned to survive more than trying to get kills. Meaning if I'm almost dead, and opponent has upper hand, I run. Good chance you'll get assist. Secondly, after winning a fight and low on health, recover fully before going again. Those have helped me a lot.
-
Are you using an exotic at all? Exotic primaries usually do more damage. Just move slow, no need to run into harms way.
-
Have a primary you're comfortable with, like an auto rifle or scout rifle, best tip i can give is to regularly look at the radar.
-
just use a shotgun, you'll get 15 kills a match
-
Because Darude sandstorm
-
Cause you didn't drank doritos
-
Because all the try-hards go there.
Its ok. I suck too. :/
Find out what's over powered and get you one and go figure out what you like in PvP "skills in subclass" and then find what sensitivity you like in PvP. And start going from there and eventually you will also be a prokiller. I know my kd isn't the best but I don't do to bad for not playing it a whole lot.

Use the khostov ( first gun in the game)

1 ReplyIf you are really bad, here is some tips i think will help you a lot. 1: Don`t use your sprint, always walk. 2: Hold your ground around a hot spot on the map, but not in the middle of it. 3: When you move, always be near cover. Move around touching the walls of the map. 4: Try to make sure enemies can only come at you from one side, point above is very relevant to this. 5: Watch were your team-mates are, if no one is around move towards them but keep a little distance, make sure you are covering a part of the map were its most likely that the other team are coming from. 6: Use a auto rifle with high impact. 7: Have a shotgun ready when you know the next fight gonna be close range. 8: Don`t engage at long ranges, even mid range if you feel you don`t have the aim to win gun fights. 9: When the enemy have any sort of map control, don`t be that guy who tries to push his way through a heavy guarded point on the map and die over and over. 10: Always look on the radar, if you see someone they see you too. Have patience and don`t walk right into a trap, make them come to you. Most people don`t have patience to wait, and they will charge you. Be ready and kill them.

1 ReplyEdited by BoxMaker: 1/26/2015 12:49:43 PMUse your radar. Also be wary of your enemies using their radar by crouching to make yourself become a slowly blinking red mark or even go completely off the radar by becoming invisible if you're a bladedancer (Hunter). I don't know if you know this but your weapon's stats and perks are the only things that matter (number damage doesn't matter so a common white weapon has the same potential damage as a legendary or maybe even an exotic) Thing about stats and perks. Use high impact and low rate of fire MGs and Auto Rifles (SUROS is the best in this category. Galahad, and Shingen are decent rare/uncommon replacements). Any high impact weapon is good. If you're using a rocket, then focus on velocity and blast radius. Tracking and proximity detonation are useful perks for rockets (Truth with high velocity, almost max blast radius even w/o perks, most aggressive tracking in any rocket in the entire game, AND proximity detonation makes it the best PvP rocket launcher). Shotguns, focus on range and rate of fire. The Vault of Glass Raid shotgun "Found Verdict" is one of the best shotguns for PvP. It has very good range and can go fully auto. Light levels don't matter, therefore, try choosing armour that gives intellect and discipline so u can use your super and grenades more often. Either that or try getting useful perks such as increased melee speed and exotic armors have great perks. Use your super often as that you can make orbs and that will let your teammates use their own supers more, giving your team a strong boost. If you're playing control, make sure to hold only two flags. Don't go and try to get the last one or else you'll mess up the spawns and suddenly the game can turn against your favor. Also, make sure set up your subclass!!! PvE and PvP situations are very different. Using a perk that would be helpful in PvE may be worthless in PvP. Set up your class according to what you make feel is appropriate. That's all I got for now. It's late and I'm tired.

6 RepliesEdited by Cryptonomicron: 1/25/2015 8:41:50 AMI'm glad I found this thread. There is really a lot of good information here and I am thankful for all the helpful posts. I too am terrible at PvP, so much so that I avoid it. I have four active exotic bounties that require PvP skill that are just sitting in my bounty slots because I feel like I will never get them. I admit that I am new to video games and Destiny is the first video game I have ever played (I am 52 years old). I started playing Destiny because my son is a gamer but he lives a couple thousand miles away, so Destiny has become a way for us to keep connected. For that alone I am extremely grateful. I really enjoy playing this game with my son. I really think Destiny is a beautiful game. Anyway I have a titan, warlock and hunter, all 31s that I play mostly on the ROC strike playlist, which I enjoy; but I would like to broaden my experience in PvP as well as raids. I think I have become somewhat respectable in PvE strikes. Many posts have mentioned that knowing the maps is crucial. I wish there were a PvP mode where newbies could just explore the maps. I can't seem to get more than 10 feet without someone killing me, so I have no concept of spatial awareness as it relates to the maps. I always feel badly for whatever team gets me because I know I will bring the team down and probably cause a loss. That being said, it is time for me to get in there and get my @ss kicked repeatedly until I learn the maps. I suppose it's just part of the game. So let me apologize in advance to any pro's out there whose stats I might adversely affect - sorry guardians. My other issue is the speed at which engagements happen. It seems like fractions of a second to me and things happen so fast. The few times I have tried crucible, I have found myself trying to distinguish friend from foe and in that microsecond I get fried. Old age I guess. Anyway, I appreciate the op question and all of the helpful responses. I think it is time for this old warrior to jump in and finally try for those exotic bounties. It's going to be painful, but in this case I think what does kill me will make me stronger! See you in the trenches guardians!

Use your radar
